My husband and I are on a mission! We hope to venture into the city to see as many staircases as we possibly can before we move next year. I’m sure that if you are reading this that you may have a similar agenda. Let me help! Visit this beautiful website for a full list of the Stairways of San Francisco. Prepare to be amazed! … We sectioned off stairways by location, and the Vulcan Stairway/Saturn Street Stairway were next up on our list since we were heading into the Castro. We also wanted to experience all the glory that is the Seward Street Slides. Obviously. These stairs are much shorter than others that we have seen and a lit less covered by trees and hidden by nature. I did love seeing the beautiful surrounding neighborhood and we admired the many lovely homes along the way. Start out early in the morning if you can, though, because the heat and direct sun can definitely be an anchor that pulls your energy down. Bring a camera and some sunscreen and get to hiking! This is an experience of a lifetime.

Unilocal and the iPhone Maps app guided me here and boy there were so many twists and turns to get here from Mount Olympus. It’s right next to a garage so it might not be naked to the eye. I suggest taking the left staircase since it’s evenly paved. The right staircase is wooden and is infested with flies on every step, quite disgusting. Once you hit the bottom, you have reached Ord Street. Walk down to the left toward the Dead End sign to find the Vulcan Stairway which is much nicer/well kept.

Oh San Francisco, how I love your stairs. Sure there are times when I’m tired as hell and the last thing I want to do it mount a giant incline, but overall it’s those ascending degrees that make the city so darn beautiful and unique. And sometimes those hills are covered with really cool stairways –many of us know 16th Avenue steps, Filbert, Greenwich — but there are also other less known walkways that are equally worthy of some footsteps. One such place is the Saturn Street Stairway, which connects Ord Street to Saturn Street, and is located one block off from 17th. The stairway is lined on both sides with vegetation planted and maintained by the neighborhood, and there is a nice little terrace with benches around the halfway point that makes a great spot to chill with a cup of tea and enjoy the view. If you’re ever in the area, making a trek over the daunting peak of 17th, or just want to go and see something new, make the effort and you won’t be disappointed. Take to the hills my friends, and don’t forget to stretch. p. s. while you’re in the area I highly recommend checking out the Vulcan Stairway, Corona Heights Park, Mount Olympus, and one of my total favs Tank Hill.
