First off, let me tell you that I hate myself for not finding this place within the 6 years its been open. Ugh I’m so annoying. So on an unsuspecting Tuesday night, me and the guys were hangin out. We have one of those group chats where all we do is talk about nonsense and getting a cheesesteak from this place was a topic for quite some time. I want to say a good 5 days of «When we finna get a cheesesteak tho?» Needless to say, expectations were pretty high. We show up and the place is kinda empty,… actually it was empty empty. I took a look at the menu and ordered a Rocky Balboa with cheese wiz(I read somewhere on Unilocal that there is no other way to do it) and some Pizza fries. I decide to watch intently on how they made my sandwich. As I watched, all I could say was«holy chet, that’s hella beef and it looks hellllla good» As I watched with a watering mouth I got really anxious to tear up this sandwich. I watched as the chef coated the bread with wiz first, then topped all the meat and peppers on top of that and then he put more wiz on the sandwich. They then proceeded to make the fries. Im not sure what they put in their pizza fries but it tasted exactly like pizza pringles. Some of you might think that is gross but them fries was C R A C K I N. Anyways, back to the sandwich. So we ordered all the food to go. We got back to my friends shop and proceeded to eat. My first reaction to this big ass sandwich was«How the hell do I eat this thing?» Then my second reaction was like«FUGGITYOLOOOO». The first bite was like heaven. Everything came together just right. The steak was tender and flavorful, the peppers were cooked but not mushy, the wiz was on point and the bread held up! We devoured our food and then proceeded to fall into food coma where we became useless for a good hour.

I’ve been trying a number of cheesesteak places in the city and most have been ok, but Phillies nailed it. From the bread they use(what a sweet soft roll!) to the meat(best grade) to the cheese(they offer Cheez Whiz, which I believe is the core ingredient in a cheesesteak). I got the Rocky Balboa and I couldn’t wait to get the champ in my belly. They have a contest for anyone who can eat 5 of them and a soda in an hour, the meal is free, they get their name on a wall, a t-shirt, and bragging rights. In three years, one guy has done it. I can see why. This was ginormous! But perfectly made! I also tried the cheesesteak fries with it which came covered in meat, cheese, fried onions, and sweet & hot peppers. Now this brought me back. I’ll be coming back here regularly. Maybe to catch some ball games…

Had a pepper steak with ketchup. Sanwhich was large, plenty of veg and steak and it was very good. Had an order of onion rings. Thought the size was a little on the small size but the batter was so delicious I’ll order again. This is what a hole in the wall should be. No fuss, not expensive and delicious. Also had a killer beer case.

Phillies seriously takes me back to Philadelphia. The meat is juicy and perfectly cooked, with extra cheese and jalapeños, my goodness… it’s heaven. It almost feels gourmet. The fries are perfectly fried each and every time. The selection of beer is so impressive, makes me want to try every one of them. The owner of Phillies is super cool and welcoming. You know it’s a neighborhood gem when you see regulars ordering their sandwiches without having to look at the menu. Why would you not want to check this place out!

There’s really only one place I eat cheesesteaks when I’m craving them, and thats the Cheesesteak Shop. So I decide to go on a mission to find the best cheesesteak around. And first on the tour is Phillies. I seen a lot of positive feedback about this joint so I had to go see what it was really about. I ordered«The Works, Cheesesteak» featuring Cheese Wiz A happy medium on portion size here. Its not overloaded with meat and all that extra other stuff. Some cheesesteak places I’ve been too think that if you just throw a pile of meat on the plate, that its a good well done. But thats not always the case. The meat has good flavor, I feel like the meat is more on the premium end. Maybe I’ll order more grilled onions next time, but thats just my preference. The cheese wiz is a must! My buddy ordered with provolone and it was just okay. If you wanna get that authentic cheesesteak taste, go with the Wiz! Any other cheese, you’ll just be searching for it in the meat. On the side we also order garlic fries for $ 3.95 and tots for $ 2.95. Solid garlic fries, even though at first sight I was thinking it was gonna suck because of the lack garlic thrown on top. But it had the flavor so I can’t complain. The tots were good, just you basic ones. I would probably get the cheese tots next time. The portion size is enough to share for two people so they give you a lot. The two fella’s holding down the restaurant were cool, quick, and friendly. Great cheesesteaks pair with good service. Two Thumbs up! *** Parking here sucks, careful if your parking in the neighborhood cause its dark.

I was heading back home late Saturday night, and wanted something quick and more on the simple side — by that I mean not spending over $ 20 because I want everything on the menu. I saw a cheese steak place and figured let’s give it a shot! Located off Geneva and Mission, and dangerously close to Dark Horse Tavern, this hole in the wall cheese steak place is worth stopping in. 1) It’s a good cheese steak. I’m not saying this is the best I’ve had(I still love you Philly Phlava!) but this might be one of the best in the Bay Area. Solidly grilled meat, good provolone, nice grilled onions, and that mayo. But more importantly… 2) They get Amoroso Rolls. If you know anything about philly cheese steaks, it has to come on an Amoroso Roll. Something about it absorbs the delicious meat juice, cheese, grease, and mayo perfectly. 3) They do offer cheese whiz for the purists, and it is their best seller. But I’ll stick with provolone for the time being. 4) Holy crap do they have a great bottled beer selection and a few on tap. I considered chugging one but as I wasn’t too familiar with this part of Outer Mission and all the pedestrian traffic I came across, I’m glad I did not. 5) They do have Saranac’s Shirley Temple AKA the Manliest Beverage on Earth!(also just learned Saranac does make beers. Neat.) So if you are ever craving a solid cheese steak in this part of the City, this is the one I recommend.

Huge beer selection? Check! Best Phillies in SF? Check! Quick and friendly service? Check! My favorite is their philly cheese steaks with mushrooms and teriyaki! They have a lot of other options too that are not cheese steaks for those who are not fans.

After living in this hood for 8 years, I’d always wanted to try this nearby joynt, but sadly, never got around to it. I decided the other day to change that. I walked down the hill, popped inside and ordered. The place is super clean and offers a very decent selection of beers by the bottle and a few on tap. The food arrives and it’s good… not great, but definitely good. For the best Philly cheese steak sammies, I’ll stick with A-Jay’s Cheese Steaks in Morgan Hill. Theirs totally rock and it’s a nice motorcycle ride on the back roads of the Santa Cruz mountains to get there. Good times!

I wasn’t going to do a review but I can’t stop thinking about how disgusted I am! I came here last night with 4 others and we all ordered food and fountain drinks. We all got our drink cups but we opted for the«to-go» cups that come with a lid and a straw so we can take our drinks with us after we ate. Anyway, upon waiting for our food we filled up our cups with the soda of our choice. I opted for water while the rest of my party had soda(my boyfriend got root beer, my niece and her boy friend got the orange soda, and my cousin got the coke). Well by the time we got our food, my boyfriend decides it’s time for him to refill his cup. When he took the lid off the top of his cup, THEREWEREABOUT A DOZENANTSCRAWLINGONTHESIDEOFTHECUP! He was so disgusted and started gagging. At first I didn’t know what was wrong with him but he showed me and I too was instantaneously disgusted as well as the rest of my party. When we went to tell the lady who helped serve us, she immediately got on the phone and called who I assume is the owner. Although she seemed concerned, she didn’t apologize right away which I felt was weird. As we started walking out the door, I told my boyfriend who paid for all of our meals that he should get his money back since we didn’t finish our food and our throats felt violated and disgusted. He went back in the restaurant and got his money back and it was then when she actually apologized. I know it’s not her fault. We didn’t disrespect her since she simply just works there but we are definitely NEVER going back there. FRICKIN’ DISGUSTING!

This is a true hole in the wall type of place. Very little seating, but that isn’t a bit deal since we were only there for a to-go order. Lots of options of cheesesteaks and hoagies! Also, this is the first place I’ve head of that does chili cheese onion rings. My friends all got cheese steaks and I got a side of chili cheese tots. The cheese steaks are a good size with lots of meat on the inside. Very filing and tasty! They use cheese-whiz which I think is pretty silly, but it went pretty well with the food. I asked for provolone, mainly because that’s my favorite. They also have a large range of different types of beer and sodas. I need to come back and try them all. We got a Dad’s red cream soda. I’ve never even heard of that before! It was okay. I grew to like it. Overall, I would come back.

So I recently moved back to the area, and ordered twice from here. However, the flavor is no longer the same. I don’t know what, but it’s not as good as it used to be 3 – 4 years ago. At first I thought maybe I don’t get the same thing that I used to get, but after the second time, I’m so dissapointed. I used to rave to my friends/roommates when we passed this resto about how good the Mushroom Steak. And they all agreed after ordering it. Last time I remembered, the meat taste different, the Whiz cheese is over powering. It was so bad, I feel like eating a plastic. And no mushroom in my Mushroom Steak. Granted the owner can’t be found on both occasion when I was there. But still… the taste should consistent right?! What happen to my fav joint? Please bring back the good stuff. I miss em.

This is hands down the best cheese-steak you’re gonna get in the bay. It’s a hole in the wall, and… you«might» have to deal with«east-coast» hospitality(get over it bitch they are actually friendly). My pref, the Mushroom steak, or if I haven’t eaten in three days… the Rocky Balboa(seriously, you need an appetite for this one)

Holy wow. If anybody ever says this place isn’t amazing, they are either a liar or simply do not like good olé fashion American goodness. My favorite spot in SF. P. S. order the Chase whiz for the Phillies. I like extra personally. Then, when it mixes in with the meat, don’t look stupid on front of your friends(or the internet) and go «where’s the cheese???»

Where was the cheese? Where was the seasoning? Where was the flavor? Almost $ 19 for two sammies and it was a totally lackluster dinner. The cheese melted within the meat into almost nothing. The pickled and caramelized veg did nothing to add in terms of flavor. The bread was plain. Altogether, it was like eating cardboard.. . So dry and plain! What’s the point of going to a shop with a grill when I could have made a better sammies at home on my cook top? I really wished I got liquid cheese because the sammies needed moisture. If you’re looking to satisfy a Philly cheesesteak hankering, this is NOT the place. Save your money and go elsewhere.

I have been craving for a Philly cheesesteak. Debating either the this spot or cheesesteak shop on divis(which I always love). Since I am around excelsior and haven’t been to this spot for 13+ years, I figured I give this spot another try and plus I forgot how my first experience was back then. Ordered a steak mushroom with cheese whiz. A+ good amount of premium steak. Worth the size for the $ and it was good! Fries: idk where they get their fries but well seasoned and crispy. Absolutely loved it. And drum roll… they have beer. Good selections too! I ordered my lagunitas so I can have my early morning buzz. Overall –I would recommend this place if you are around the area. Phillies FTW!

I would actually go with a 3.5 stars but thats not an option. A little diamond in the rough and unassuming but solid. I got the loaded cheesesteak with mushrooms and peppers. Loved the peppers, meat was a little Tough and got cheese whiz. I would go with provolone next time but thats all preference. Would definitely come back when Im in the area. Rather clean little joint.

Havent been here for a long time. I had to write another review on my most recent visits. Whenever i do go here, the cashier is always friendly. But i wasn’t happy about the service when getting the food. Who waits 15 — 20 minutes for a to go food! The cooker had a big grill to cook multiple sandwiches(about 6 or more sandwiches) but the cooker only cook one order per person at a time! I dont know if he wanted to make the sandwiches/meat fresh for each customers. This cost me not want to come back no more. I order the mushroom steak sandwich. Cost 7.95. Okay price. They dont cut your sandwich for you if you take it go. It’ll get very saggy and wet by the time you get home. I thought it only average/decent. It wasnt as good when i had it couple years ago.

I think Phillies is probably the most authentic Cheesesteak in all of San Francisco. They pretty much cover all the important basics with any real Philly-style Cheesesteak: Sliced Ribeye Steaks? Check! Amoroso Rolls? Check! Cheez Whiz? Check! I had their Mushroom Steak Whiz Wit’out and it was so good! And the biggest plus here is that they have TOTS!!! It makes for an awesome combo! And for those with gastronomical fortitude, they have a crazy food challenge: 5 Rocky Balboas(Large standard Cheesesteak with EXTRA meat and EXTRA Cheese) and 1 soda in 1 hour. GOODLUCK!!! This is definitely the spot if you’re craving a really good Cheesesteak!
