Gorgeous, historic building that has been preserved! I have walked by the building numerous times, never knowing I was passing a historic landmark. Recently saw someone’s picture and decided to look up where the famous Phelan Building was located. Turns out it is the building of Marshall’s across from Wells Fargo on Grant! I would advise taking the photo from outside of Wells Fargo, or across the street on the other side.

The Phelan Building is a beautiful landmark building — from the outside and the lobby. It was purchased in 2008 by Thor Equities of New York. Since the purchase, Thor has been forcing out all the small businesses that traditionally occupied the building since it was built in 1908. Thor is gutting the interiors, stripping marble wainscoting, oak doors, and oak trim — the likes of which will never be seen again — to provide square footage and entire floors for large corporate tenants. What’s more, Thor is not recycling any of the vintage building materials, the marble and oak. Yep, it’s all going into landfill.

An amazing, historic building that’s definitely a noticeable and important part of San Francisco. Besides the fact that it’s an incredible building to look at, it also has some retail stores inside such as jewelry and watch repair boutiques. They better not ever tear this one down…
