I went to get an omelette today. The hash brown were good, but the omelette was so oily, it was like a tsunami of oil in my mouth. It made the vegetables and the omelette very soggy. «Health Food» as they advertise it, not so much. The food in general is very good here. I hope the people operating read this review and decide to cut back on oil they use in the omelette.

The salad is still good as ever! The sushi is really good! My favorite salad bar. Mr. Lee and his wife, Michelle, updated their menu and added hot sandwiches. They also added more sushi. I really miss this place. I work so far from this location now, so when I get the chance, especially during summertime, I come by to pickup lunch here.

What happened here? I used to love coming to this place; now I enjoy walking by it more than entering into it. I am not sure if this place is in financial trouble but it appears they have started getting skimpy on everything… The fruit is looking quite nasty — pineapple brown and tarnished — strawberries gelatinous on their bottom side… just obviously stuff that was out the day before. The mushrooms still have dirt on them & turned brown; the carrots are dried up and getting that white crusty stuff on them, the red and green peppers also reflect similar signs of aging(i.e. slimy in certain areas.) the broccoli leaves are flat/dropsy and the lettuce is all wet to add weight. And to top it all off — they no longer have cucumbers — one of the(if not thee) cheapest vegetables out there… If you’re in financial trouble, I highly recommend adding them back to your repertoire; as they are cheap and add significant weight. I could see this place having an off day here and there(as they did previously when I would go there almost daily with my co-worker) but I have been there 3 days the past week and every single day has resulted in the same ‘second day’ material. New York Deli needs to step up their game and stop pretending people aren’t going to notice ingredients that aren’t fresh. In the mean time I’ll be taking my monies to fountain café and will check back periodically; hopefully, allowing a better follow up review.

Not sure what was so special about it, but the breakfast burrito(eggs, bacon, sausage, cheese, hash browns, and a splash of Tapatio) was absolutely the right thing at the right time.

Wow, this place is anything BUT a New York deli. Big salad bar with a great variety of stuff to eat. Sold by the pound. The place has what I would call a «utitltarian» amosphere. Very basic. The variety of salad stuff, and some warm stuff is pretty good. The sushi pictured in the profile here has not been served here in months. The stuff they sell is OK, but not fancy. It is nowhere near as fancy as the picture.

Don’t come late, because a lot of it is gone by 1:00 — this is really good food. It’s all fresh and flavorful — the quality ingredients make a huge difference. I love the veggies, tofu, sushi and asian specialties. Sometimes you just might feel like having tuna salad and squid for lunch — and they make it possible. Smoothies are righteous and have fruit and yogurt instead of ice — and less expensive than jamba juice to boot. Old Jer sez check it out.

Squid salad! Glorious squid salad, big ‘ol pieces with tomatoes, sold by the pound, in a buffet-style setting(minus the all-you-can-eat). Tentacles, too! I am in love. (The rest of the food’s good, too, and the cashier’s nice. This place is not quite normal, but it’s straightforward enough: put food on plate, pay, eat. The price was about 20% more than I expected, but I will forgive them, because they let me have squid for lunch.)

So I finally decided to make a pit stop at this place(which I thought was called the«Healthy Food Salad Bar») today after 5 years in FIDI. My decision to grab a salad here was by default … well, the truth of the matter is I saw two cute guys going into this café and so I followed like a little school girl. I watched what they put in their plastic to-go-box(so not environmentally friendly) and concluded they were both vegetarians. My assessment: vegetarian & hot = great combo. Anyways, this place has so many options to put in your to-go box. Even fried tofu. Yes! And if you aren’t feeling the salad, they have enough options for a hot plate. There are way too many things going on in this tiny space — in a good way, of course. They even maximized their outside space with a fruit stand(pre-packaged fresh fruits and veggies). Love it! But here’s what I love most about it… CHEAP!

New York Café(although this name is nowhere on the outside of the establishment) is a great lunch time spot. Thanks to Unilocal for helping me find another salad bar place to include in my regular rotation! It’s run by Korean ladies from what I’ve seen and is super affordable too. The salad bar was $ 6.49/lb but they also sold fresh fruit smoothies and juices. Highlights of the self-serve section included: jap chae, various pasta salads, marinated tofu, grilled eggplant/bell pepper, fresh sushi, other Asian veggies like boy choy and snow peas, hot foods like roasted chicken and noodles, and marinated mushrooms. I loved the healthy and tasty variety! It was mostly a cold bar but I could always nuke the food back at the office if need be. I suggest getting there early and scoping out all the options before piling them on your plate. I tend to make the mistake of getting a little bit of everything and overeating in the end. haha They also accept credit cards which is a total plus!

This place is funny. There’s no actual sign that says«New York Café»…I don’t think anyone really knows WHAT it’s called until, like I just did, they look it up. My co-workers and I call it «that salad bar place», and that’s probably what we’ll always call it. There’s a lot going on in this tiny spot. Outside there’s a stand with pre-packed fresh fruits and vegetables. Step inside and you can order any combination of freshly-squeezed fruit and veggie juices, as well as pre-made sandwiches of the vegetarian and non-vegetarian variety. They sell oatcakes, energy bars, ice cream, beverages and chips up there too. A few more steps inside is where the salad bar begins. Actually, it’s more of a buffet. Some of my favorite pickings are their: sweet broccoli salad, tuna salad, faux crab salad, marinated and grilled vegetables, avocado-topped sushi rolls, rosemary chicken thighs, marinated mushrooms and curry chicken. The half-dozen or so hot selections vary daily; everything appears to have been made fresh that morning and when it’s gone, it’s gone… so be sure to get there early!

A colleague of mine has a habit of introducing me to places that seemingly have no name. She took me here this week and I scoured around to find what the establishment was called. Finally, I asked the woman behind the counter. She let me know that it’s called«New York Deli» because they’ve modeled it after the numerous deli-cum-salad bars in Manhattan. This tiny spot off Sutter Street has a good amount of saladish offerings which will keep me coming back. It’s not Wildflower but it’s still quite good. A recent lunch included: Half a mango Ruby red grapefruit segments Half an avocado Fried tofu Spinach Super fresh and crispy green beans Broccoli and mushrooms Spaghetti Kim bap Jap chae It cost me $ 8 and change which to me was a very fair price given both the quality and quantity of the food I had. The owners appear to me to be Korean and they clue you into this with items like kim bap and jap chae. The signs outside do not include the name so don’t look for«New York Deli» to be posted anywhere. Look instead for signs that announce fresh fruit smoothies and juices. Outside the small and narrow store you’ll also see pre-packaged fruit plates which will signal that you are in the right place.
