I wouldn’t traditionally give a joint like this 4 stars but you know what? I’m a fan and every so often find myself craving the onion naan and chicken tikka masala. I kind of learned to love it as the underdog, ugly duckling that it is. There is a cave painting on the wall and the chairs are Christmas colors — nothing really matches except for the lovely curtains. Sometimes the waiter, cook and cashier are the same person: always attentive and polite. The experience is simple and no thrills and I love it for that. And this is coming from a girl whose husband would sadly describe as high maintenance. The onion naan is deliciousssss and the chicken tikka masala decadent, creamy and mild. I’ve never been disappointed!

You know, it was a little suspicious to have the entire place to ourselves on a Friday night at 8PM. It was pretty dead. BUT, the food was actually decent. When it FINALLY arrives. It took(no joke) 20 minutes to get our chicken tikka tandoori, chicken tikka masala, and the okra dish. I mean, sure it’s ala carte but man, 20 minutes! The workers were super nice — well, being the only patrons in there could be a reason. The tables were a little dirty sketch — not that we were looking for a top of the line deal, but hey, a nice wipe down would be nice. The bathroom was a one shotter but it was clean. The chicken tikka tandoori $ 10 came in 6 breast meat chunks. Well seasoned and good. The $ 10 chicken tikka masala was interesting — it was good. Spicy and creamy — maybe too creamy but it was good. $ 10 Okra was good but super spicy. Not slimy at all. The naan was really really good — maybe I was just hungry but the garlic cilantro naan was off the hook. Hot, thin but thick, and blasted with herbs. Overall not too oily, the place is relatively clean(for what you’d expect), priced well, parking is easy, free chai, and the Hot 100 Indian Videos blasting on the tube. Can’t lose.

Lotsa anti reviews on this place, but I like it. Mind you, I don’t come for dinner or to have my white ass kissed, I come for some curry and some bread at lunchtime. Lunch in the $ 8 – 10 range is a fine deal compared to the $ 10 sandwich place just a block away or most of the miserable stuff by China Basin. These lunch specials, ordered and paid for at the counter(who are these people who got bad table service? I never got any, I just go order), usually arrive quickly and are spicy, fresh, and hot. Occasionally they have a lamb vindaloo on special, and it is awesome! Too hot for pussies who whine about table service though, so if you’re one of them don’t bother with this place.

This place has a dump of a dining room with a really weird cave drawing fresco on one wall, mediocre food on the bad side of mediocre, and is way overpriced. The lunch menu consists of about 4 items, all priced around $ 10(they aren’t fooling me with the($ 9.99 pricing scheme), which come with rice and naan. The chicken tikka masala was OK, but there wasn’t nearly enough chicken in it. The chana masala was lukewarm and some of the most flavorless Indian food I’ve ever experienced. I feel like I probably would have given this place another star, if it weren’t for their prices. I got what tasted like $ 8 worth of food for a total of $ 15: wtf?

The food was cool. I was please with the order I got, the Naan was really good and just the regular curry chicken. The thing with is the after eatting there the smell of the cook food leaves with you so when you get into your car, mos def that your car will be smelling like cury too. Id go back if I was in mood for naan.

Come one, come all to this exquisite Indian food restaurant. If perchance you’re in the SOMA area and craving some spicy, tongue tingling curry that will give you the worse case of flaming a**hole syndrome, this is the place to be. I guarantee you the spices in the curry can be experienced both ways — ingestion and egestion. If you’re lucky, mild cases could simply consist of uncontrollable fumigation, or in friendlier terms, crop dusting. A bonus if you can… wait for it… evacuate your whole office pod without being identified. *** Aside from the unanticipated visits to the porcelain express, what also marred my meal was that the waiter gave me the wrong takeout order. I had ordered chicken tikka masala, but instead of the chicken, he gave me two cartons of lentil curry(??!). Oh, what a great experience.

Eh, I like this place OK… I almost gave it 3 stars but then I remembered that every time I eat here, about halfway through the meal I get that feeling like«Oh yeah, I’m never really satisfied with the food here.» I don’t think the samosas are up to par(soggyish and missing something), and I normally only order the(generic of me, I know) chicken tikka masala or lamb curry, but I’ve tried the chana masala, too. I thought the latter tasted like chick peas soaked in chicken broth and lots of salt, and that was definitely not something I’d try again. I read someone else’s review(Zach J.) and it is true what he said about the grease quickly separating and rising to the top of your food… blech. I don’t feel like this restaurant is super clean, so I’ve always taken my food to go. It also isn’t cheap. For the amount of money that you can end up spending if you get any extras, you might as well go to nearby Mehfil on 2nd and Folsom — they’re just a few blocks away and the food is much better!

When I was here I saw an award for best Pakistani food in SF. Really? Really? Is this because because Shalimar was categorized as Indian or Bangladeshi? The food here is doable if you’re craving Indian and you can’t make it anywhere else. However, it’s not nearly as good as Shalimar. The palak paneer(sag paneer) did not seem to have fresh home made cheese and the spinach was not fresh. The tandoori chicken was okay. Make the extra effort and trek over to Mehfil instead.

I was temping near here & knew I’d end up going there one day simply because I’m a sucker for Indian Food. I had the lunch special Chicken Tikka Masala which for $ 10 came with plain naan, rice & some daal. The Hubbie who works not too far from here got the Saag Paneer. We also ordered another garlic naan not knowing we got the carbs covered. The food was good, but nothing too amazing. I think it does well because of the lunch crowds since I can’t see people trekking out here if they aren’t already in the vicinity. Their chutney *is* good however.

The food is ok, but priced higher than Naan n Curry. It was empty when we arrived, filled with a few folks in the middle, and empty by the time we left. Everything is a bit spicier(and by spicy I don’t mean hot like chili, I mean more spices in the food) but I don’t necessarily see it as a good thing if it doesn’t add to the taste. Unfortunately since I haven’t really been to other Indian restaurants in town, I can only compare it to Naan n Curry really. To compare the two, I’d say the size of the dish is approximately the same, and the taste is almost similar. The naan seemed a little more flaky here, not so much soft and bread-ish like at Naan n Curry. Service was ok, I mean it’s not really a place where you can expect service. Guess we were abnormal by sitting down, getting menus, and having the server take our order. And no booze, so if you want to get your drink on, there’s a liquor store across the street.

I work a block from this place and live close to the Haight Street installment. I’m a fan of the wraps, the channa masala, and of course the Naan. Pretty inexpensive lunch, but they take forever… order before you arrive for take out, it can be a *really* long time.

The plan: to ride with Greg to drop off his truck at a repair shop, stop by Naan N’ Chutney for a quick lunch on the way back to work, and return to the office and meet our magazine deadlines before our superiors break out their whips. Plan’s optimistically estimated duration: 30 to 45 minutes Actual amount of time to execute plan: 1 hour and 20 minutes The breakdown: 5 minutes to drop off the truck. 5 minutes to walk to Naan N’ Chutney. 5 minutes to order our Naan wraps. 35 mother fucking«Jesus Christ what the fuck is taking so long» minutes watching others, who arrived after we did, get their orders first. 5 minutes to actually prepare the meal after we pointed out they skipped our orders. 15 minutes to begrudgingly snarf down our food. 10 minutes to walk back to our office building. Followed by 45 minutes of flogging and the most intense Chinese nipple torture I’ve ever experienced.

This is a review by a vegetarian 2.5 stars This is counter order, take a number stand, sit, food delivered to table. The ordering was much slower than expected for a weekday lunch rush. Samosa’s were very forgettable but hey they’re only $ 3.50. The sauces on the table were tepid, thin, and not flavorful. The chickpeas that came with them were served in a watery yellowish broth and were also bleh. Garlic Naan, Seasame Naan, and Onion Naan were surprisingly good. They had a nice crispness on the bottom and chewiness everywhere else. The potato naan lacked density and flavor. I’d go again if someone else suggested it but I’m not leading the charge back here.

I have been working in SOMA for 3 months now and just had the best lunch EVER down here. Starving for lunch today I decided to take a left from the front door of my office as usual… However this time I decided to pass up the south park options(that are all good) and just see where 3rd street took me. Walking past some place called the DRH café(or something) I was sketchy on what I could find this direction… esp. as I knew that goat hill pizza was just a few steps away and a big time no-no. So I see this place… looks new… looks clean… plenty of seating, I entered. I saw the special board and noticed my favorite Indian specialty, ‘Chicken Tika Masala’… I knew what I wanted. After plopping down my $ 10 I grabbed a seat and waited maybe 5 minutes I was presented with a huge piece of naan, the chicken tika and some obscure dish that had lentils in it and was mushy(in a good way). After one bite I was in some kinda of nirvana state… high on the Indian spice… seeing one of those Indian idols with the 16 hands and an elephant trunk… before I knew it I was back sitting with a clean plate and a burning in my mouth that was oh-so-delightful. With a full tummy and a clear head I walked back to work inspired to Unilocal for the first time in months.

really it’s a 3.5. 4 if they had consistent delivery. Usually we call and they have no drivers so we wander over. BUT the food is really good. and cheap. and close to home.

I like this place. So happy to find a new place to eat in the South Park ‘hood. The chicken korma was yummy and the naan is very nice. I’m a big fan of Indian Oven and I thought the korma at Naan N’ Chutney was every bit as delicate, but more complexly flavored. My parents, who are not very adventurous eaters, enjoyed it. My mom is a germ freak and it was clean enough for her… and my dad claimed that the spices cured his toothache. And the people who work here are nice.

Sometimes, when a meal is particularly good, I have to wait a few days to be sure I don’t gush too much. other times, a meal is so bad that I’m inpatient for BART to arrive so that I can get home and prevent others from making the same mistake. Naan & Chutney falls into the second category. Here’s why. 5. They are obviously counting on customers mistaking them for Naan & Curry(Shawn T, I thought the same thing) 4. The bathroom had a showerhead in it. And a wide steel circle. Don’t know what that was for. Don’t want to guess. 3. The last time I saw a bathroom that dirty, I was in a train station in Greece. This is the closest thing I have to a happy memory about N&C. 2. The service was abominable. We were also the only people in the place. 1. My samosa was bland, and the chicken makhala very, very greasy and an incredibly unnatural color. In the interest of fairness, Dan N’s fish tikka masala was good(or so he claimed) We were trying to go to Primo Patio for dinner on a Monday night(it’s closed) I was convinced to try this place since we were walking by. NEXT. This may well be the worst Indian food in the city(and there’s a lot of mediocre Indian, so that’s saying something)

Man, there are some angry Unilocalers on 3rd St! I had a great meal here, and for $ 10 it is way more food than you need for lunch AND dinner combined. I would go here again… I had the coconut chicken and it looked and tasted just like the other dishes at the table. I am not an indian food expert, but I am a good food expert, and it was *good*.

Well, apologies if you wandered over this listing looking for Naan-n-Curry. That’s what happened to me. I was wandering around SOMA looking for a bite to eat and saw this place. Oh, there’s a Naan-n-Curry here. After I wandered in I realized my mistake but thought I’d give it a shot anyway. Mistake, BIG-ASSMISTAKE. Everything I had was pretty bad. I am Chinese and know what bad, bastardized Chinese food tastes like. I have always wondered what bastardized Thai, Indian, Vietnamese, etc. cuisine would taste like. Have I been eating bastardized versions all this time and not know it? Possibly. But, then I tried this place. This has got to be what genuine bastardized Indian food taste like. The pu-pu platter and sweet and sour pork of the Indian cuisine world if you will. If not, please let me know. I am morbidly curious what would qualify for that if this places does not. They also tried to rip me for almost $ 10. When I asked for the bill I noticed the server spoke to the manager and just scribbled down something quickly on the pad. Thinking that the cost was more than I expected I added up all the line items. I told her that it was wrong. She looked at it and said it was the tax. Well, what fucking tax guide are you using??? I constantly had to explain to her that 8.5% of this does not, in any possible way, come anywhere near the total she tallied up. After several mini math lessons she finally went back to the manager. Maybe he realized he couldn’t blindly rip me off and came back and apologized. Look, if you are going to screw over someone your food has to be damn good. Coma inducing, food drunkenness good. Then maybe your customer will be too blissed out to do simple math. However, if you’re food is utter crap your customer will probably be pretty alert. Unless you poison them. But, then you run the risk of the customer suing you and sticking you with the hospital bill. Ah, quite the dilemma.

Hmm. A new«indian» restaurant near work. Is this a good thing? Well, we’re always looking for new and interesting places to try besides our rotating 4 – 5 places. I tried a lamb wrap(in naan) and it was pretty good. Not bad for $ 7. There were a variety of lunch specials at around $ 9 – 10, which seemed pretty popular. Why only 3 stars then? Well, I’ve only tried one dish, so when I return I’ll bump them up or down accordingly. It does bother me that it’s yet another formulaic Indo-Pak(is that what desi means?) joint, with the same menu, same chai, and same paintings on the wall. But, not as much as I was bothered by the tandoori chef’s longish hair, curls dangling down his forehead itching to dive into the entrees he was preparing. Don’t these guys have to wear a hair net or something?
