Metro Kathmandu had always been on my list to try ever since it opened. Alas, it took hearing of their impending closure to finally light a fire under my butt for me to make my way over. I suppose that makes me part of the problem, and I regret not showing my support sooner. In the last week and a half, we’ve been back twice and would like to squeeze in one final visit before doom’s day(which is this weekend) — the food is that delicious. So far we’re especially partial to the buffalo and chicken momos, tomato soup, the goat curry, and a shrimp saag we requested as a custom dish. Chana chatpat was a clean, refreshing chickpea salad with which to start, though next time(i hope there’s a next time!) I will try the samosas and see if they’ll serve them on chole like their brunch menu has. It’s such a comfortable neighborhood spot, and the wait staff is very efficient… just the sort of low maintenance establishment I like to keep in my bag of tricks. Metro Kathmandu, I know we haven’t had a lot of time together, but I already feel like I’m losing an old friend. Maybe your owners can resurrect you once the economy picks up? Pretty please?

Saturday, 10:30AM. Dang that place is red! It’s a physical wake-up call for your retina. Took my hottie and got there a bit early to avoid the traffic. Apparently, there’s very little traffic at this time because we were the only ones there. I even made reservations in fear because of the raving reviews about the momos! + Clean establishment, cool décor n’ ambiance + Samosas were aiiiite though — the cholle that came with it was a good touch * Mediocre service — Vegetable momos were blah: there was no flavor, too bland and mushy Final Call: Too many other places that sell momos for me to come back here.

Reading the menu, it’s not very clear what differentiates Nepalese cuisine from Indian, though the Momos are one standout item — an intriguing form of dumpling. But basically, I consider Metro Kathmandu to basically be a very good, expensive Indian restaurant. We had the Everest momos(full of buffalo deliciousness) which were quite rich and tasty, and came with a subtle Indian-spiced dipping sauce. The chicken curry and lamb vindaloo were both exquisite — thick, rich, very hearty sauces intensely spiced and deeply flavorful. And when they warn you that the vindaloo is spicy, believe them! Wow, it nearly broke my dining companion, and was the spiciest thing I’d eaten in a long time, and I love me some intense salsa. The biggest downside(in my opinion) is that they don’t have naan, though the rotis weren’t bad. Most of the entrees are in the $ 16 range, and while they’re pretty good sized, they’re not huge. Rice and rotis are $ 2 each, so the bill actually can add up pretty quick(because you’re guaranteed to need at least rice or roti, if not both). Their wine list is surprisingly solid, with a nice selection of Riesling to contrast with the intense, spicy food. If you’re getting something really spice, let me strongly recommend a sweeter wine; the Riesling they offer by-the-glass is a good option. Also, the $ 5 corkage is pretty fantastic if you decide to bring your own.

Sadness is knowing that Metro Kathmandu is going to change up their menu and move away from their Nepalese cuisine, come July 4th weekend. Don’t worry, the owners will still be the same(Roshan and Shrada), but in an effort to attract more clientele, they’re shifting things around. Sign of the economic times, I guess. I was there this Saturday to get my momos fix, not to mention to enjoy their typically delicious versions of tika masala and saag paneer. The place was packed, which was good to see, and you can count on me getting in there a few more times before the momos are no mo’. On the positive side, I’m looking forward to what the new incarnation might be and am hoping to be able to frequent it as much as I did with the current Kathmandu.

I think I have found a new go-to spot for when I’m craving a laid-back atmosphere and some great Indian food. But that wasn’t what lured me here to begin with. The fact that I didn’t have to travel to Nepal to get some delectable momos was why I felt I just HAD to try this place. They were awesome — and to be honest, next time I may even be tempted to just have a straight-up momo meal by sampling all 3 with a willing companion. But then I would have to forgo the oh-so-tasty saag paneer and chicken tikka masala. So maybe not… Let me also add that the service was GREAT and I loved having a buzzed chat with the owner and talking about Kathmandu(where he’s from). And a $ 5 corkage??? Seriously, coolest thing ever.

Words to live by… Spice going in is fun. Spice coming out? Not so much. I love this place. The everest momos were delicious and the vindaloo made me cry. Both that evening and the next morning. Service was stellar. Climber.

Recession special, anyone? MK has a $ 5 corkage BYO special during the week. Pair that with their great service and what are you waiting for? We went with a group of six(on a Thursday night) and everyone loved the food. We also lingered longer than we should’ve, but the wait staff wasn’t hovering or weird about it. In fact, they were fantastic — on top of every detail right up until we walked out the door(which they had to close after us, oops). We of course had the momos after reading the rave reviews on Unilocal — you were right! We also tried 5 – 6 dishes including veggie korma, tikka masala and delish buttery bread side dish — my favorite(yum, yum, yum). Everything is portioned perfectly for sharing, so order a variety so you don’t miss a single flavor.

With the great reviews, I definitely went here with high hopes. Outcome — Totally disappointing. Was very excited about trying the momos, as I have heard of them from other bloggers and such, but there was something very very off about the ones we received. Don’t know why, but the food just was not very tasty.

If I had to chose my last meal on earth, I might just go back to Metro Kathmandu for more everest momos, chicken tika masala, paratha, and mango«ice cream»… Seriously, one of the most perfect meals I’ve had in a lonnnnnng time. I love Indian cuisine to begin with, but Metro K has the twist of delicious Nepalese style. Everything was great, nothing was spicy but it all had SO much flavor. Plus the service was great and the atmosphere is modern/cozy/vibrant. PLUS it’s in walking distance from my house! YES! My friend and I split the appetizer, the meal, and the paratha(like Naan but more flaky & buttery & awesome) and it was PLENTY of food for us. We’re both pretty small and we had a late lunch… So the bill was very reasonable actually. Then we each got our own desert — she ordered the rice pudding, of which I was not personally a big fan, but she really liked it… and I ordered the mango«ice cream» which was orgasmically fantastic. I mean, if this were my last meal, I could die happy knowing that cold mango stuff was the last thing on earth I’d ever tasted: P

Metro’s momo’s are still absolutely delicious! My dad and I ordered TWO plates of em; 1 for a starter and 1 to finish off the dinner. We were both obsessed w/them! Our only dinner spoiler was our server who had this snobby air about him. Not only that, but he took his sweet time w/getting the manager for us to correct our tab. Cut out the unnecessary game playing BS next time, and I’d be more than happy to bump up my rating to 5 stars. Btw, the happy hour is no longer in effect. To make up for that, they have a mere $ 5 corkage fee from Sun-Thurs till the end of April.

I came here last night with a large group of friends in celebration of Unilocal’s one and only, Meredith R’s, birthday. What a great pick for a fun evening out. Metro Kathmandu was so accommodating and patient with our party. I have an extreme sensitivity to spice so in places like this I ask a lot of questions like, «If you could compare this to ___, is this dish spicier or more mild?» Mostly when I pull this I get shifty body language and death stares but this was not the case here. I did this with like five items and she didn’t even flinch. We ordered quite a few things on the menu but my favorites by far were the Veggie Momos, Goat Cheese Roti, Lamb Curry and the Spinach Goat Cheese Salad. Sure my mouth was on fire and nose was running like it had a marathon finish line to cross but it was too good to even care. Tip: Bring your own vino. There’s only $ 5 corkage fee here!

Thank you, MK, for making my birthday dinner a wonderful evening. I made a reservation weeks back to spend my birthday with my closest friends. We had an absolute blast. MK is a wonderful place to celebrate; it’s cozy and intimate and they really do their best to go above and beyond in regards to service and friendliness. Even the chef came out to say hello and see how we liked everything. The food was excellent! We ordered so many things: chanta chanta, warm goat cheese spinach salad, goat cheese roti, veggie momos, all amazing appetizers! I had the lamb saag and lamb curry for my entrees. I preferred the curry; they have it just perfect — enough sweet and spices. The brought us three little desserts and they were all delicious, especially the mango-like ice cream. All in all a great evening and I can’t wait to be a repeat customer. *Note there is a very cute patio which must be lovely on a freakishly warm SF evening :-)

I love Nepalese food! We walked by this place one morning on our way to breakie and I had wanted to check it out ever since. I went there tonight with my two friends and was not disappointed. The menu was pretty traditional, but the dishes were delicate and delicious. My only slight complain is that the crab momos were not served as warm as I would have liked them to be but everything else was great! I recommend the saag paneer and the chicken vindaloo.

We made a reservation for four at 8 p.m., and unfortunately, we were seated over 30 minutes late. The party whose table we were supposed to take were taking forever to pay the bill, so it wasn’t really the business’ fault. Even still, they comped us wine while we waited and also brought us the lamb appetizer as soon as we sat down. The little In addition to the appetizers they brought us, we ordered the goat cheese roti, everest momos and chicken momos. I liked the everest momos, but my favorite was actually the chicken momos — they were really flavorful and tasty. I wasn’t particularly thrilled with the goat cheese roti — it was pretty standard, though a bit dry. We ordered a number of different main items, including chicken tikka masala, goat curry, dal and saag paneer. My favorites were probablyt he chicken tikka masala and goat curry. Both flavorful but not too heavy or rich. The meal was really reasonably priced and the service as really nice and friendly.

Prior to visiting this establishment, if you’d asked me what Nepalese food consisted of, I would have stared blankly at you, and then yelled something like«Hey! Look out!» and pointed behind you, so you were distracted, and turned around. Then, while you were facing the opposite direction and looking for the fictional threat, I would’ve run away, because I don’t like not knowing the answer to a question. But having just enjoyed a delicious, beer-fueled dinner at Metro Kathmandu, I now DO know the answer. So you can ask me again, and I won’t flee, or threaten you. Guess what? Nepalese food: just like Indian food, but now with 98% more goat! Lest you think that’s a bad thing… it ain’t. A four star meal indeed. Curry, masala, korma, saag… all my favorites, PLUS goat! The meat and the cheese! A winning combo!

Something beautiful has happened at Metro. The Eggs Benedicts are back. If you read my previous review you’ll see that these were my original reason for patronizing Metro. When I discovered all their other offerings, both for brunch and normal dinner, I realized I didn’t need the benedicts to survive. But by an act of either god or Roshan, the benedicts are back in their multitudinous glory: regular, smoked salmon and crab cake. Look, you’ve had eggs benedict before. You think you know all about the delicious combination of eggs and ham on an english muffin smothered in a sauce that my chef friends and the internet tell me is composed mostly of butter. But here’s the deal: you don’t know a goddamn thing about this oddly named conflagration of The Best Breakfast Foods until you’ve sampled the various benedictine delicacies of Metro Kathmandu.

Holy mama this place was gewd! Props to Miriam for choosing a yummy place to get the crew together for dinner! At first I thought we were going to have to drop bows for them to add another two chairs for our party of eight. Apparently our reservation was for seven and homeboy looked a bit stressed because we needed two more seats. Um… the place was not packed or anything so we were a bit«huh?» As soon as the confusion passed though, things were all good! Reallllly good. We thought we would order a gang load of menu items so we could get a fair taste of the restaurant. We ordered the samosa, goat cheese roti(amazing), chicken momos, chicken tikka masala, saag paneer and about 40 other things. Everything was tasty with a hint of spice. This place is great for any pallete or picky eater because they offer such an array of different tastes. I hear the brunch is really good on Saturday and Sunday from 9:30am to 2:30pm. Whenever you choose to go, just make sure you do. Take a good group of people and don’t forget to order a couple Taj Majals!

I’m searching for the word… ummmm… I think the word is «blah»… okay it’s not a word… more like a sound… although technically words are sounds too. I’ve had«real» Nepalese food, and this ain’t it honey. Real Nepalese food doesn’t taste like a less flavorful(notice, I did not say less«spicy», just less flavorful… yes there is a difference) version of Indian food. Real Nepalese food is bursting with clean simple flavors. The food I had here… not so much. It has flavor, but far from clean and not well balanced. I sat in the restaurant pondering how this place so mediocre could get a solid 4 stars and voted as a San Francisco best by the Guardian. Then it dawned on me… it’s a warm inviting space… one that makes your senses feel awakened with its bright colors and well balanced décor. Ah, yes, but the food still leaves so much to be desired. I would give it two stars if the décor wasn’t so nice. Since my life revolves around food, and I’d take good food in a dump than mediocre food in a nice space. Would not recommend. Not even if you live just a block down the street(like me).

This review is for the weekend brunch only. I’ve been coming here(this location) for brunch for ages, usually meeting up with my buddy who lives in the Lower Haight. We didn’t even notice that it wasn’t the Metro Café until we walked in. «Uh, looks like they redecorated…» «Umm, Nepalese?!? Do you want to stay?» «Excuse me, do you guys serve brunch?» We were led to the back patio area and given menus. I was surprised to see that it was almost the same as before with some benedicts, french toast, etc. I was kinda hoping for a more Nepalese menu, but hey, I guess they knew that the old place did a brisk weekend brunch business and wanted to keep that going. I got the Salmon Benedict with crème fraîche. French toast and an omelet were the choices of my dining companions. Solid brunch fare was the consensus. Definitely on par with the old Metro Café. Excellent service as well which was a change for the better. Our coffee and water cups were never empty and my request for additional crème fraîche was fulfilled almost before I finished speaking. My friend told me they’ve added more ethnic items to their brunch menu so I need to go back and check it out. Who knows, maybe I’ll go crazy and go for dinner too!

Solid. Perfect for a first date. Not too pretentious, not too expensive, it was $ 70 for two with drinks. That’s damage I’m willing to accept. The food is very similar to indian food, just a few dishes that seem to be Nepalese like the«goat curry». The service and atmosphere here were great, definitely a recommendation for a sit down place for dinner.
