The sushi & sashimi combo was fantastic. Service was great and fast and well worth the money!!!

I am coming here for dinner on sat. Ordered ramen noodles. The only one on the Manu. It was sooo salty. Can hardly finish! The two items dinner combo. Was bad too. Fish was so dry.

2.5 stars. Restaurant is a little dim and outdated, but there are always tables available. Service is pretty fast. Extremely average lunch time bento. 2-item combo for $ 10 and 3-item combo for $ 12 – 13. You can pick from katsu, teriyaki, spicy tuna roll, california roll, salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, gyoza, sauteed veggies, etc. — Miso soup– average — Salad– probably don’t dry the lettuce, since it was watered down. Dressing is something like peanut and ginger. — Rice– can sub for another portion of salad instead — Tuna sashimi– 3 pieces, didn’t taste that fresh but it was fine — Spicy tuna roll– average — Fish katsu– drenched in katsu and wasabi cream sauce, but not bad

Update 5÷24÷2016: I came here again even the past two times here was bad but it was so close to work, this time my server is Vicky and she is super and very helpful, food was fast and very attentive, I’m changing my review to 5stars because of her awesome service and I’ll come back again! I want to give them one star, but at the end the server thank me sincerely so two instead. It’s a family business after all. I ate here every week since its next to work, the food is usually good and service is what it keep me coming back. Even though they never ever come up and chat me up, but the“thank you” is alway there. But today I’m so disappointing by the service, I ordered take out at the door. She is so business, I was standing there for 10mins before I can order, and I’m waiting for another 15mins for my sushi(yes one Alaska roll sushi $ 7.95, I give $ 10 so there is a good tip for take out) and I only have 45mins lunch. The sushi chef isn’t even making my order, he is showing customer?! his cell phone. And the roll is much smaller then usual. I might not come back again.

I’ve been to this place several times, always getting the lunchtime Bento. It’s a reliable fairly cheap lunch in Union Square. Nothing amazing but certainly good enough. This time, I ventured from the Bento and ordered the curry donburi. It’s vegetarian, and when it arrived I found that it was potatoes, carrots, and a few peas in curry sauce over rice. Unfortunately with the first bite it was obvious that the potatoes were overcooked, and possibly not very fresh in the first place. I mean, how do you mess up potatoes in curry sauce? It just wasn’t good. It didn’t taste fresh, and the fact that it was only the potatoes and carrots and a few peas meant that I couldn’t ignore that the potatoes weren’t good. When I put it aside, the hostess asked if everything was okay, and I told her that I didn’t care for it, and then it didn’t taste very fresh. She responded by saying«oh no it’s very fresh we made it last night!» Somehow hearing that your food was made the day before it does not inspire confidence in its freshness. Do they sometimes serve curry that’s even older than one day? I again said«it’s not good.» She responded by saying«oh no it’s very good.» And walked away. The other waitress noticed that I wasn’t getting, and asked if it was okay, so I explained. And again she just sort of said oh and walked away. There was no offer to replace it, or to remove it from our bill. So, I wound up paying for it and ate half of my friends Bento. It was clear that I was going to have to make a scene to get it taken off the bill, and I just didn’t feel like it. And that was that. I won’t go back.

They’re the best in the neighborhood and a lot better in many ways than all of the Japanese Restaurants I’ve been to here in San Francisco. No other restaurant can serve Uni like they do. Servings of Uni are sweet and fresh. Aside from the wide range of selections they have, you could tell that the food is cooked and prepared with utmost sincerity. You can’t find that in just any Japanese restaurant here in San Francisco. I’ve been to a lot, but nobody serves food like they do at Maru. Hard to believe? Try the following Seafood Udon Uni Katsudonburi Godzilla Roll I feel so lucky to find this place. Everyone’s friendly and sincere. The sushi chefs have the best sincerity you seek in anyone preparing sushi. Enjoy!

If there was an option to select zero stars instead of just one I would. This was the WORST sushi experience I have ever encountered. I absolutely dread writing horrible reviews because it is a waste of time and energy but I wish someone did earlier to save me from such a horrible experience. BACKSTORY: The initial visit was on 2÷28÷16 around 2pm with a party of 5 including myself. We were all tourist in SF on a quick trip to union square. We also all happen to be craving sushi because we are all frequent eating and sushi lovers. Found this spot randomly walking around and thought it was fate. The restaurant had two other customers but was pretty much empty(SUPERSLOW). Thought that was a sign of bad service but Unilocal gave it 4 stars so we just decided to go with it. THESTORYIFYOUCARE: Upon our arrival, viewing the menu wasn’t very clear. Tons of options but little did we know it would be so strict with pretty much basic sushi if you wanted a «deal» otherwise you’re better off just ordering the expensive rolls for a better taste. Right off the bat our server/waitress was extremely rude and brief. I asked her if we could split checks within our party so we can order accordingly just to make it easier for her. She yelled at me and told me we would do it at the end. She had ZERO patience to explain the menu when asked questions and rushed us to order. Her assumptions caused confusion and chaos as well as ordering the completely wrong thing I asked for. Thinking that I ordered the deluxe meal(10 pieces of Nigiri and a roll that I thought was your choice) she was extremely rude when the sides were given and ordered my party not to give me the miso soup since all of their orders included the following. She was extremely rude about it. I continued to keep my patience and politeness. We waited an hour and a half for our food in a empty restaurant and over the course of time asked her several other times for water because she kept forgetting and we were dying of thirst. Around the third hour everyone received their food except me with only receiving one roll. m and waiting for the nigiri. Once we realized, we acknowledged her that I had wanted the deluxe special. Clearly we misinterpreted the order on both ends but if she explained the menu better and wasn’t in such a hurry the mistake would’ve been prevented. That is completely her job to help the customer. She quickly left the table to tell the chef about the order with once again not caring to understand what we exactly asked for. As soon as I could get her attention again I asked her how long would it take and she rudely interrupted me and was so quick to answer my question and(AGAIN not listening to me) gave me the wrong reply. She then lied and said the chef made it already. I no longer was hungry but didn’t want make a scene or ruin the time I had with my party. At this point I just wanted to leave and ask for the check. Lastly, she confused our checks(that I tried to prevent) charged me for the deluxe meal and two extra rolls. I pretty much paid $ 83 including my partner’s meal and a picture of beer. The outcome was for a half empty stomach and bad attitude. I would’ve never paid that price but then I remember that she was an older lady probably working for her family and I didn’t want to take it out on them. OVERALL: Customer service is extremely important and can make or break a business. I just hope no one has to go through this situation and this saves them the time and trouble. The worst part was the service was so terrible the sushi may have been good but the entire experience left a disgusting taste in my mouth. I will never visit this place again even if I was starving.

Came in on a Tuesday night and it was busy. Ordered the chicken teriyaki and a lion king roll. The chicken was charbroiled and it was very good. It came with miso soup which was very good, salad and rice. We ordered fried ice cream which was good too. Service was ok. It was like they were too busy to think about giving us menus and straws.

Fast, hot and delicious. Miso soup is heaven. Spicy tuna hand roll is to die for. Veggie tempura was scalding hot and crispy tender deliciousness. dragon roll was to die for. And yes, I devoured it all. What’s all this about bad service? Everyone was very friendly and service-oriented. I would easily recommend this Union Square spot

this place is more like a 3.75 Ive came here twice and had pleasant experiences but nothing that blew me away. The 1st time i came i ordered an Avocado roll and a house salad. The salad was great. You could tell veggies were super fresh and crunchy. My avocado roll was also great tasting but i didnt like that there were SOTINY. Seriously it looked like a tiny sampler plate. /: Since that tiny ass roll clearly wasnt gonna fill me up i ordered a cucumber roll which was JUST as small): So i ended up playing $ 20 dollars that day and still felt hungry /: The second time i went i was hoping to get a bento but i didnt see anything about that on the menu so i had to order the platter thing(which is literally the same thing but not served in a box) for $ 18!!! I got over the point that i was gonna pay that much and ordered the veggie roll & veggie tempura. The miso soup, rolls, rice, tempura and salad all tasted great but that price still killed me. Not sure if i’ll return.

Tried out this place for lunch. Not bad. $ 13 for 3 item combo bento is a good deal. I ordered spicy tuna roll, ton katsu, and salmon sashimi. They had a good variety of options to choose from. Plus rice, salad, and miso soup. We also ordered the rainbow roll which was pretty good quality as well. Fish tasted fresh.

We enjoyed our meal but it wasn’t spectacular. We both ordered the chicken teriyaki which came with miso soup, salad, and rice. The miso soup was very good! The salad dressing didn’t have much flavor. The chick n was fresh but wasn’t seasoned too well– the teriyaki sauce as good but more would have been helpful. The staff was very friendly, however a little understaffed. Chicken teriyaki– $ 15.49 Soda– $ 2.50

It’s just an OK place if you are starving and craving sushi and are near the area. Not worth the drive since there are better places around SF. Costumer service was extremely slow and it was half way empty inside. The rolls all came in at different times and we were almost done by the time they brought my friends teriyaki plate(which was about 20 minutes after ours). Nothing special as far as the sushi taste. For the price you pay it’s really not worth it. 2 rolls that I would absolutely recommend not ordering are the volcano roll and the potato bug roll. Both had such a weird texture and flavors. Seems to be more of a sushi place for those who don’t really know what really sushi tastes like so they settle for their sushi. If your’e a regular sushi eater I would not recommend.

I am going to say 3.75 stars and round up. Why? I had been putting off my sushi fix for awhile but while visiting SF it got the best of me. The restaurant was pretty full on a Sunday night at 8pm but service didn’t suffer(2 servers) Pros: tasted fresh and I loved the way they sliced the cucumber in the middle of the roll that added a crunch I had the dragon roll and red devil: I didn’t think they would be impressive when I saw them but the flavors were very fresh. Service was quick. You can in and out relatively quickly for a bite. Con: pass on the tempura– it’s a small portion for 8.5 Unilocal tip: my iPhone gps got a bit confused. It is on the corner of Powell and Sutter on the north side– diagonal from the drake. There a lot of people, sounds and such as it is the fringe of tourist central and lots of businesses. Basically look up the big hill– it’s that direction about half way up the block– suck it up and earn your tempura!!!

What a great spot! Easy to find, fresh ingredients, and quick service. I had the Powell Roll and it was amazing! The beer pricing is cheaper than most other places in the area too, so that is a plus. For a large Kirin it was only $ 7.00. I was able to get out of this place in under 30 minutes too. Overall a good find!

I went for an early lunch on Memorial Day(~11:30am) and was one of two parties in the restaurant. It was definitely nowhere close to capacity! When I walked in nobody was at the register/hostess counter but I was seated by a woman within a minute of entering. Also when I came in the front door was open, making the restaurant very cold when I sat down. Not sure about that. When I sat down, she gave me my menu and disappeared back to wherever she came from when I entered. I decided on getting a bento box within a couple minutes but she(now acting as waitress) didn’t come back to my table for well over 5 minutes and closer to 10 minutes. I ordered my food and she was about to walk away before I requested a glass of water, which I would have thought would come out right away. I got my bowl of Miso soup(included in the price) within a few minutes, and it was delicious! The food was prepared quickly and came out soon after, and at least and the presentation was top notch. The water was warm, unfortunately, and came out with the meal. I ordered a Spicy Tuna roll and Chicken Teriyaki(2 item bento box) for $ 10 and it came in a nice 5-compartment wooden box, along with a ball of rice in one, an orange and broccoli with sauce compartment, and a salad. The food was excellent, thankfully! A great portion for the price and the rice was superb. The vegetables and meat tasted fresh and was very flavorful. During the course of the meal a few others entered the restaurant, and the hostess directed some to seat themselves and assisted others. Almost always the customers had to wait a few minutes before any staff noticed they were there. I’m not sure if it was standard operating procedure or it was just a setup time/busy morning, but I don’t think that was a great way of entering the restaurant. The music was loud and easily audible but was irrelevant to the decoration. Lots of pop and electronic chill music, but no commercials. While the meal wasn’t out-of-this-world good, it’s definitely a place I’d take a friend. I hope the service is better next time though, and I would have liked(ice) water a little sooner!
