We love Lama’s Kenpo Karate. Our 6yo has been going to classes there for the last(almost) three years and our 3yo just started classes — They both love it. The head instructors, Sifu Thompson and Sifu Fernandez, are amazing ladies. They have an incredible capacity to be both nurturing and demanding. Before and after classes there are lots of hugs but when the kids are on the matt, we are always impressed with how disciplined they are. The kids are serious and focused in class, but there are always smiles and moments of humor. The whole vibe at Lama’s is about community: the kids from all the different classes mingle, older more advanced students assist with the little ones, they have pizza and movie nights. All in all, we can’t say enough good things about Lama’s and the ladies.

Wow. I’ve been taking my 4 year old to Lama’s Kenpo Karate for 2 weeks and he is totally HOOKED. The kid checks in about it several times a day to make sure he’s going and has never shown this much enthusiasm about anything else we’ve done. Professor Lama(the owner) is one of those rare people who genuinely cares for and ‘gets’ kids. He can’t seem to help himself when it comes to making sure everyone gets what they seem to be needing(i.e. self-motivation, confidence, attention). He’s that dream coach movies are made of. I swear to you. The instructors at the Bernal studio are former students and just watching them in action, you see what a tremendous impact he’s had on their lives. Ms. Thompson and Ms. Fernandez are amazing. The classes are strict and physically/mentally challenging, but you definitely feel the underlying loving attention the teachers give. It’s refreshing to see people who expect a high level of respect from kids but actually reciprocate. We’re glad to see Lama’s back in Bernal.
