I’ve seen these gentlemen buskers do their thing many times, but never really thought to review them until Lee A. and I were sitting down for a meal at Boudin’s in their back patio one afternoon. It was a part of the ambient sounds along with the rumble of street cars and all the chatter of tourists that I had just tuned out. That is until Lee said, «You know I never really heard that Bruno Mars song performed this way before, but it works.» And there it was, a minimized window in my mind’s desktop dragged forward to my attention. At first we assumed it was coming from the restaurant’s outdoor speakers, but then there was a round of applause behind us. These guys are great performers. They’re really talented. The group consists of three men playing six steel drums. While they do play the usual reggae favorites by Bob Marley and UB40, they also play Caribbean folk songs as well as covers of ‘60s soul and modern pop artists. Occasionally another performer, «Flash,» joins in with them. I tend to see them under that famous, oft-photographed Fisherman’s Wharf sign, and that’s where they were when Lee A. and I see them last. Kick a few bucks their way, they’ve earned it.
