Great! Belgian beers on tap with homestyle Indian food. Who’da thunk it? This is my first Indian restaurant I’ve been to in San Francisco, and I haven’t ventured elsewhere. I don’t want to try anything else, as the flavors here are perfect. Well, to be honest, now that the place is closed, I have only one choice– to head to their original location. No problem. I like the fast casual walk up service style. You see your food, you order, you eat. End of story, see you next time! Keep it rollin’

Boohoo Kasa closed at this location. It was so convenient. I will still trek across town to eat their delicious food.

We decided to check this out a couple nights ago, and while I wasn’t expecting to love it, I really did enjoy my meal! The layout in the place is a bit odd. When it first opened, they used to have a Chipotle-style assembly line for ordering your food, but they have sort of blocked that area off, although not completely, with a menu. I also found it exceptionally bright in there at night. If you like Indian food, you’ll like this casual take on the cuisine. Their main dish there is a Kati. This is like a mini Indian burrito, using roti in place of a tortilla. While the menu suggests two or three for a meal, I think you would be just fine with two. Three would be quite gluttonous. At $ 4.50 a pop, that’s really not bad. You can grab a couple Katis, a side of daal, and a drink for under $ 15. If you’re coming for lunch, they have a great lunch special: 2 Katis and a drink for only $ 7.95. That’s a pretty huge discount, and I think I’ll have to take them up on their offer one of these days. I think that lunch offer may only apply to week-days. I ordered two Katis, but only one was ready. They said they would bring me another one as soon as it was ready… after 30 minutes, it turns out they forgot. Darn. I was ready to just leave and forget about it, but the cashier was nice enough to offer me a free $ 5 gift card for my next time. Well played. Also, for those of you who have been to India… They serve Kingfisher here! :-). I don’t think I have seen Kingfisher on tap since I was in Delhi over summer! This is a good place, and I’ll definitely be coming back.

I finally got a chance to see what all the hype was about at this West Coast kati roll joint. Unfortunately, Kasa isn’t worthy of the hype. I’m afraid that people hyping it up have never had a true kati roll from England or even New York — the two meccas of exceptionally good kati rolls. Kasa fails miserably. I tried both the paneer and chicken tikka masala rolls, in order to get the complete experience. Unfortunately, the roti was super thick and soaked in oil, making it heavy and difficult to digest! Overall, the paneer roll was better, because I think it’s easier to avoid screwing up paneer in masala. I’m still wondering what happened to the chicken tikka flavor in the chicken roll. What a disappointment! They also had a special running that offered a free soda when you buy 2 rolls, or upgrade to a mango lassi for $ 1. Obviously I upgraded, and then regretted it. Who puts lychee in a mango lassi? Terrible! They need to tone down the lychee flavor, or should call it a lychee lassi. No more kati rolls at Kasa. I’ll wait until I go back to New York to visit the Kati Roll Company.

Pros: Indian food in the Marina – you don’t have many options, and it’s quick. Cons: Food is just not that great, and I was hoping it would be healthier/lighter. Fun: Last time I ate here there was a girl passed out on the street from being so drunk, so we had to call 911 to come rescue her. We didn’t want to resort to 911, but when we tried to use her phone to call her friends, they would not come get her(she ended up being fine). With friends like that…

The food at Kasa is delicious. I think the chicken tikka masala is definitely the bomb, especially if you come early. You probably will feel awkward eating alone in the restaurant since this place is generally pretty empty even during lunch time. But yeah, the chicken tikka masala is worth it. I got the sides version and they gave a ton of it. Turkey kebab and chicken tikka are also my other favorites. The turkey kebab tastes so good with the raita. The mango lassi tastes spicy, which I don’t really expect, so I usually just get the soda which comes with the thali plate. This is probably the«House of Nanking» of Indian food, but eating in Indian joints like Shalimar require too much effort in ignoring the bums, the crazies, the dirty floor, the dirty table, and the list goes on…

Call me crazy, but sometimes, I need a break from the hole in the wall Indian joints that reside in the Tandoori-loin and their litany of oily, unhealthy offerings. I’d never bad mouth the taste of what you’ll get at Shalimar or Lahore, but I’ll tell you what — often times, you feel like a complete bag of garbage about one hour after eating. Whatever crack they add to the innards of their best selling dishes is always remarkable, but you feel as slow and sloth-like as Hurley trekking through the Hawaiian jungles trying to keep pace with Jack Shepard. Might be a fun way to round out the night, but when it’s 7:30pm and you’re looking to take a bite before enjoying the rest of your evening, it might not be the best call. Kasa, on the other hand, is quite tasty, and it’s devoid of the slow, sluggish food hangover on the back end. While they do have full plates of quality Indian specialties, they really shine with their kati rolls. You can pretty much order any of their menu items, and upon request, they’ll wrap it up inside delectable, flaky, buttery, homemade flat bread. Anything from lamb curry, chicken tikka masala, paneers, vegetarian options, et al. And best of all, it’s clean and super cheap. I believe 7X7 Magazine even bestowed upon them«the best meal under $ 15» this year, and I can’t say I argue the accolade. There’s really nothing else like it in the Marina, so they hit one out of the park with their location right in the mix at Fillmore and Union. Plus, they’re open until 2:00am on Friday and Saturday, so if you find yourself slamming Jägermeister with your old college chums, rest assured they’ll be there to soften the blow come the following morning.

Kasa was recommended to us for our office lunch meeting by someone who had just eaten there the weekend prior. She couldn’t stop raving about how good the food is and how nice the staff is. The chicken tikka masala wasn’t made the«traditional» way I’m used to having it at restaurants. It wasn’t creamy. You know when you have left overs and put them in the fridge, the next day it comes out solid like a block of lard? Well, this wasn’t like that. There wasn’t any cream or hardly any that we could tell. The spices were perfect and was just spicy enough for everyone. It was delicious!!! We also ordered Daal which was delicious, some kind of vegetable dish(sorry, I don’t remember the name). It had cauliflower in it and it was also delicious. My favorite next to the chicken. The lamb was odd, I heard. I didn’t have any, but my coworkers thought it tasted like corned beef. The raita was also a great accompany to the food. Oh, and the roti was a big hit in the office too. I though it was too wheat tasting, like there was a lot of fiber in there, haha. But overall this lunch was a success. I would order from here again. Too bad they couldn’t deliver… or maybe they do?

Well, if I were rating for the cleanliness, freshness and courteousness of the staff, Kasa would probably get a higher rating, It’s a well adopted business modela nd hats off to the owners, on the location, the concept and to demystifying indian food and presenting it in a non fussy manner. But being Indian, having had a taste of the original Kaatis, I would be unfair if I gave Kasa a higher rating. The first time around had paneer Kaati and the alu jeera — both bland and with the roti being v flimsy, usually the bread made in India is richer and thicker and the filling being spicy and rich too. Balancing the flavors is key to making a good Kaati. Anyhow, didn’t want to rate it until I tried it another time and this time it was with hubby. He is a good cook and is particular about what he eats. We were both very hungry and having sat through many hours of a dance performance, decided Kasa would be convenient to grab a bite. But guess what! despite the hunger we didn’t finish the food we ordered– a thali for the Mr and rolls for me coz it was plain and bland again. Just not worth the price. Not authentic Indian at all :-l

Recently saw reviews of this place on Unilocal when we were fishing for new Indian takeout places, and not too many days later ended up there with a friend after a shindig over by fort mason. I was excited to try! The place is super casual. it almost felt like a fast-food/healthier/cafeteria-feel. It’s likely just the metal lunchy food trays that make me feel that way. I like those meals/sets that they do – all for $ 12. great way to try more than just one dish, and get some veg in you! I came from only eating chicken tikka masala and naan from England … and it just wasnt the same. CTM was spicier than I like it and it’s my main dish — was a bit bummed that it wasn’t the usual delicious(prob not super healthy) butter, thick sauce … just not what I was hoping for. I’d go again if people were desperate to go and get some food after drinking, but not sure I’d recommend to go out of our way to get there. Bummer… I guess time for dosa.

************* REVIEW216 **************** 1AM, this place is a perfect food to hit the spot for all that alcohol we take in all night! The Chicken Tikka Masala — Char-grilled and marinated naturally-raised chicken in a spicy, creamy tomato sauce wrap was great. The Lamb Curry Saucy grass-fed lamb and potatoes with rice, beans, salad & what not. The tray is 3 times bigger than my head, simply amazing! I finished the whole thing in 7 minutes! It was that GOOD! My FAV late night snack in the marina now! Henry & Tom were so nice behind the counter. Imagine they have to put up with drunk people all night long! Truly Indian Taqueria!

Seriously delicious, lamb curry and chicken tikka masala kati rolls. Add a Limca to this and you have the perfect meal on a chilly night! The prices are great; the kati roll is the perfect amount of food for me for $ 4.50 and my bf could enjoy the plate for a little more. They need something like this in Atlanta! :)

04.11.10 One thing I fell in love with in NYC was kati rolls. So of course I had to try it out in SF! After the Vintners Market Wine Fest, a bunch of us drifted over to Kasa. $ 4.50 for a chicken tikka masala kati roll? Don’t mind if I do! Not as good as the first time I tried it… but then again, what is?

Indian fast food, I like! :-) Considering it’s a cafeteria style quick serve place I think the food is actually pretty good. I liked the two item plate and all the side dishes it came with, it was plenty of food! I had the chicken masala and the cheese and spinach — both were very tasty and not too heavy. Oh– and, they serve beer and wine! :-)

Not bad, not bad at’tal. In fact, I’d say that I was quite impressed with Kasa Indian Eatery. It’s a shame it was erected after my exit from Marinaville. On the outside it looks a little fancy, like you’re in for a nice dining experience. Which I guess isn’t necessarily untrue but there’s no service, it’s more of a buffet style, pay at the counter and sit down joint. The fried cauliflower was my favorite part of this meal. I ordered a plate with two options and it was all tasty but I can barely remember the rest because my brain was fixated on FRIEDCAULIFLOWERFRIEDCAULIFLOWERFRIEDCAULIFLOWER. I had a one track taste bud. I can’t remember if it was a special or not but God I hope not. I’d be really sad if I went back and it wasn’t available.

«Eat your heart out!» My food says to me as it’s served piping hot within 5 minutes of ordering. And I did. I ate until I couldn’t possibly eat one more morsal of food… then I let my food digest for about 5 minutes while sipping on my wine and ate some more. I had no idea what to order, everything looked and sounded amazing so I left it in the very capable hands of the gentleman behind the counter. He made us two platters of everything from kati rolls(very much like an Indian burrito) to chicken tika masala to lamb curry. There’s so much flavor with every bite… you try and eat just a little. The service was phenomenal and the food was incredible… you must try this place if you even remotely enjoy Indian food!

I am in love with Udupi Palace, but thought I would give Kasa a chance at my love too. Majorly disappointed in my to-go order today… by the time I got home, the«flaky, buttery roti» was so tough and flavorless I chose not to eat it. Saag paneer was very bland even though there was a huge cinnamon stick in my serving. Nothing coming up out of the steam trays onto other plates or into other rolls looked appetizing at all. So I don’t think I would be inclined to give them another go, because my love awaits me on Valencia.

Kasa Indian Eatery has just opened a second location on Fillmore in the Marina area. The first-time restaurateurs team behind Kasa is British-born(Hounslow, London), lawyer-turned-mother-turned-chef Punjabi Anamika Khanna & self-professed business(former Kraft Foods brand manager) geek-turned-aspiring restaurateur Tim Volkema. The third member of the Kasa ownership team(& nigh invisible) is Suresh Khanna, who acts as their Chief Financial Officer. They are joined & assisted by sous chef Jose Ceballos. Last year Anamika even authored a book, ‘The Mischievous Monkey”! The restaurant is a fast-casual Indian street food eatery that make & sell simple, homestyle North Indian food at reasonable prices using natural & local ingredients. Kasa boasts stark, industrial design, efficient counter service, & a simple yet highly focused menu centered around the traditional Indian flatbread known as roti. The menu basically consists Chicken Tikka, Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Curry, Karahi Paneer, & Aloo Jeera available as Kati Rolls or on a Thali(Plate). Rolls are 4.50 each & Thalis are 10.95 each. A limited drinks & sides is available. Drinks include Limca Indian soda, curiously made by Coca-Cola. It tastes like Squirt w/a hint of ginger is a little less carbonated than Sprite or 7-Up. The food is served on meals on ultra durable metal(thalis) trays that were sourced by Khanna’s cousin Kiwi in India. The fabulous Kasa crew recently hosted a Unilocal Elite event before it was even open to the general public, which rocked! Thanks, Kasa! Santa’s Unilocaler sez: «Kasa is mi casa when it comes to Indian food in SF!» He’s such a dork, mixing two languages to get a cheap pun!

Yum! Typical Indian dishes — aloo this, paneer that, CTM — but offered in a choice of a platter or a Kati, a buttery whole wheat wrap that turns it into street food. They advise you should buy two or three of these $ 4.50 puppies to make a full meal but given their portions tonight at least I would say, oh, about one. Interior is comfortable, spare, and… a little unfinished still. As I type the concrete is drying on the sidewalk up front and getting to the front door involves dodging pylons. Service looks like San-Francisco style Indian — order at a counter, pick up, grab your own fountain soda. It’s not fair to judge a place by opening night, but they really hit the spot foodwise. The combination of fresh homemade bread wraps, closer to a savory pastry dough in taste and texture than the usual bitter doughy tortilla, lavash, or pita, and much thinner and subtle than the usual naan. My favorite treat was the raita that comes with every dish, rich, dense, and creamy. I must have eaten two or three cups of it by myself already, and we’re only 20 minutes into the opening event. My prediction, if they keep it up and stay open late, this is the perfect snack spot for neighbors in the day, and the stumble-to spot for drinkers and partiers in the Triangle. Now we don’t have to live and die off midnight pizza, there’s a new game in town.
