This place use to be fun place to go years ago ! Intl the current owner Lee became the Manager. He’s late wife did a great Job before him. I miss Her ! I read in the paper that a Barteder from the Gangway sued Lee reg wages owed to the Him. I’m not surprised in the least ! Lee is cheap as hell. Rude and Ungratful ! Last time I went to the Gangway I saw Roaches running around on top of the Bar. Gross ! But what can you expect ! He is not manager material he use to be a Truck driver and a Janitor. He has no social skills. I hope who ever buys this Bar cleans it up it needs TLC !

This is one of those top 10 must visit bars in San Francisco old-​school oldest gay bar in the city with a diverse clientele the majority are gay men the most welcoming and friendly in town with a strong population of boozy straights.
The juke box is jamming there’s a room in the back if you want more privacy with video surveillance cameras stationed so you can watch the street this represents the San Francisco old and new I hope it stays open forever plus the drinks are strong tasty and supercheap!
And of course all the bartenders are absolute dolls very polite.

On our recent visit to SF from NY, we had some time to kill waiting for friends for dinner. LOVE THE GANGWAY!!!
YES, this is a dive bar with a capital D. But its fantastic! I fell in love with Ed the bartender after a quick 5 minutes. He’s sweet and personable and the drinks were strong and cheap. Crazy mix of old time regulars singing along to music and watching sports on TV.
Like being in an episode of Twilight Zone. GO!!!

I was waiting for my movie to start and decided to check this place out. First let me start by saying that this is a complete DIVE bar! I’m going to give a shout out to the bartender Ed who was completely friendly and has a heavy hand when pouring the hard alcohol. This is a bar where you can people watch for days. The neighborhood is a bit rough but I didn’t feel unsafe. I will be back for sure! Thanks Gangway for the good evening.

You often say that you’ll start at Gangway, but you’ll be there the whole night. Nice and friendly bartenders who remembers you after being there once. Cheap beers. And talk to the sometimes a bit strange costumers.

How many times have I gone here with my friends to just have a drink and I end up staying here all night? Way too many to count. But hey why does that matter? I had a damn good time each and every time I have gone to the Gangway. That is why i will keep coming back! =)
This is your neighborhood dive bar where you can make anything happen while dancing to Tina Turner, Madonna, or anything your mind fancies. You can sip on a fabulous Passion Fruit Martini made by my favorite bartender Ed (works Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings), and converse with any of the interesting people you meet while you are on your journey.
You will very much have a wonderful time here at the Gangway, just remember to come with an open mind and an empty stomach!

first occasion: a gay friend in town. so i naturally brought him to the most unpretentious divey gay bar in my hood on a sunday afternoon (2pm?). and it was a freaking blast. there are so many characters in there. a guy across the bar bought us shots. and we took them and talked about titanic and all other stuff. i went home and passed out at 6pm…
second occasion: couldn’t fall asleep. so i naturally went to gangway to have a beer and clear up my mind a little bit. got bought a drink again by a drunk guy next to me. a very nice girl came chat with us and asked if we wanted to go smoke pot with them (oh right i live in the tenderloin). but i was tired enough to go to sleep (or was i drugged? probably not). i went home and passed out.
on both occasions, most patrons are older guys sitting alone thinking about something. some of them will talk to you. they are very friendly. no attitude whatsoever. but i might have an advantage of being in my twenties…

After walking by this place a thousand times I finally went in on a Wednesday night for a night cap. This place is exactly what a bar should be: cheap, clean, roomy, has a juke box and a heavy poor. I’m still feeling my Jameson shot which ended up being more of a tumbler full of whisky. Thanks Gangway

This is THE strangest gay bar I have ever been to. I just want to take a photo with everyone because they are so bizarre yet so fascinating. The bartender on the night I went looked a little like an Asian Starsky of Starsky and Hutch.
The drinks are way cheap and the ceiling is covered in a sort of black plastic tarp, which makes my imagination run wild about what happens when the only female in the bar leaves or when perhaps there are special events. What a trip. But a good one. Wildly interesting in a Fear and Loathing type of way.

Gangway truly is a Tenderloin home to all, or as everyone says in here, «all are welcome». Its true and its fabulous.
Friendly patrons, a nice pour, and a good time to be had by all. Food sharing is a plus, these guys can grill chicken to make your mouth water.
One of the nicest, low key, non hip places I have seen in our Fair City.

This area has an abundance of fake tranny tits and crack-​head sing-​a-​longs but it is sorely lacking in free wi-​fi spots. Enter the GANGWAY.
Yeah, it’s one of those old man gay bars where toothless, un moisturized, 35 year old rent boys can be made, used and um abused.
However, is a perfect spot for a cute brown girl on deadline to get a Trumer, free wi-​fi, peace and all the old skool U2 that I can chair dance to.

Gang Way is way great! In the early afternoon, it can be a bit quiet and, frankly, a bit sad to see folks (like me) drinking so hard so early in the day. But during a more proper hour, the place is a pleasant respite from the street. There’s a super mixed crowd of differing ages and ethnicities, but all very friendly and easy going. It’s clear there are regulars that are quite familiar with each other. Yet, we felt very welcomed. The neighborhood has a reputation for being rough, but all the better to keep the hipsters at bay. They can keep Zeitgeist, we have Gang Way.
