Overpriced, terrible service, mediocre quality sushi. The server told us to leave the table at certain time because we did not order«enough number of dishes.» Nowhere in America can a business treat their customers this way and still manage to survive, let alone the disappointing overall quality.

I am a firm believer that nobody, I mean NOBODY, does dinner like the Japanese. I am a sushi fanatic. I love fresh fish. I usually skip the cooked rolls and the ones covered in sauce. I’m more of a fresh fish connoisseur. I lived in SF for 5 years and have tried countless sushi places. I also lived in Japantown for 2 of the 5 years but I always avoided the Japantown mall restaurants because frankly there’s just too many serving the same stuff and I never know which one to choose. I have tried a couple places and they were all pretty subpar. So, I typically stick to the sushi places I know, which are outside of Japantown(Ironic I know). However, one night I happened to be strolling through the Japantown mall & stumbled across this place. My friend and I walked in, looked at the menu, then walked back out. The prices were a little steep and we were skeptical about paying because we didn’t know if it’d be any good but for some reason we decided to give it a shot. The waitresses were pretty attentive. We ordered sake, edamame, and a couple of rolls. I’m not a big fan of sake so I won’t even review that because my opinion is biased. The food took a little while to come but let me tellllllll you, that damn fish was FRESH as hell! I have never had fish so fresh in my life! I mean it melted like butter in my mouth! We ordered a combination of salmon, tuna, & hamachi(yellowtail). It tasted like they had an ocean in their kitchen, with a fisherman on the dock, catching, filleting and serving that fish on a platter. Unbelievably fresh! We spent about $ 99. 2 people. Typically, I spend about $ 30 – 40 alone and $ 60 – 70 with 2 people, on a sushi meal. So, this place was definitely a little pricey. We probably over ordered because we were hungry and we did order sake. Drinks always make a bill over the top. I wouldn’t casually frequent this place because of the price but I’d definitely go on special occasions or random weekends when I want really good sushi. Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to go back to see if their fish is consistently this fresh but I have dreams about this place lol! Only kinda joking! Lol! I will go back & leave a follow-up review stating whether or not it was just as good the 2nd visit.

Great fish! The nigiri was superb and I’ll be back soon even if it is expensive. Loved the hamachi, fatty tuna and the white tuna.

I have no idea why people are giving this place one-star reviews when they say the food is good. Trolls, maybe? I have to agree with Yowz A.: there are a lot of reviewers who have no understanding or appreciation for sushi. I came here with a bit of hesitation based on a lot of the negative reviews. However, I still decided to eat here because I was famished and it was one of the few places still open at the Japan Center past 8PM. Was satisfied with the immediate seating. I also liked that a good amount of time was given to my friends and me to look through the menu and decide our orders. Oddly enough, our sushi came out before our tapa — but I am not complaining! Service seemed to go a bit downhill after we were finished with our meals. The check did take a little while to come, although we asked for it twice. So, the inconsistent service is the only reason I am not giving this place five stars. Food-wise, everything was great. My chirashi was colourful and fresh — just the way I like it! The nigiri deluxe special also looked really good(my friend ordered that). Just take note that the food here is really in the $ 20 – 30 price range per person, but the fish quality is excellent.

Don’t ask me why my friend ordered Chicken Teriyaki at a sushi place. It happened. That said; the order came out and a majority of the chicken was tough and bland. Plus they’d squeezed some peanut(?) sauce all over her vegetables. Ew. She tried to eat it because she didn’t want to make a fuss; but when that clearly wasn’t working out(2 bites was the most she could stomach) she asked for the order to be replaced with a California roll. WHYDIDOUR server try to charge us the 16 $ chicken terryaki cost for the 6 $ California roll. HA! No. Gtfo. It’s one thing if you order something and decide you don’t LIKE it. That’s your bad, 100%. But, it’s another if your food comes out like garbage and are still asked to pay for it. I enjoyed the dragon roll & my friends enjoyed their tuna. Based on service, I won’t be returning. There are WAY too many sushi joints in this city to patronize one with sub-par service. Skip it.

There are a lot of people posting reviews here who have no understanding or appreciation of sushi. Those who give this place poor reviews are amateurs who equate good sushi with ridiculous Americanized rolls and huge slabs of fish. Posers. They need to stick to places like We Be Sushi and the boat places, which fit their lemming, low-grade tastes. You won’t find higher quality fish anywhere in town. Take your pedestrian tastes elsewhere. End of story.

A star for good quality fish. There was no refill, separate checks took a long time, the wait for our bill was more than 20 minutes long Not coming back ever

The food here is excellent but the service is miserable. No less than 8 separate mistakes were made, leaving us continuously pissed off. They didn’t greet us or acknowledge our presence for 15 minutes but walked past us They refused our request of the tatami room for a birthday, which then sat empty the whole night They took forever to take our order They had to be asked four times for a lemon slice They forgot our soup and served it after the main They forgot one person meal entirely and delivered it after everyone finished eating They made a big spill on the table in a careless haste and didn’t clean it up They left one person’s drink unfilled They argued with the customer So many bad things happened I can’t remember if this is all Left a $ 2 tip and won’t be back EVER

This place is not for those with thin wallets! That being said, this establishment should not receive reviews that encroach on libel simply because of the pricey food– what’s more important is the quality: price ratio, which is fantastic here. The food is amazing. Sit at the bar and order omakaze, and nothing else. Ordering«rolls», especially something like California roll at a very good Japanese restaurant is a waste of your time, you can get them anywhere. By ordering omakaze(chef’s recommendation) you get a true gauge of the restaurants freshness of food and the chef’s ingenuity and creativity. His first dish was a bowl of mixed uni, chutoro, tobiko, and nato bean, which is to be wrapped in seaweed and eaten. Then we had clam soup, and the sushi: lots of very very fresh, melts-in-the-mouth chutoro, fresh-out-of-the-oven eel, uni sushi, hamachi(also fresh), and others. Chef Nobu also offered me anything I wanted to keep me full– I had a prawn head udon. Awesome.

Omgosh. Ridiculously overpriced. And ridiculously slow service. The restaurant deserves 1.5 stars, however the sushi is delicious, so that earns them .5 of a star. I guess the waitresses were really nice, although they seemed confused half the time. Our food took an hour to come. From 1:45 to 2:45 pm we received no food, not even a salad… Or miso soup… I guess I didn’t mind cause I enjoyed the company of my family and the ambience is nice. Finally my seafood salad came… Then my brothers’ fresh water eel teriyakis came, and then after multiple reminders to the waitresses, their miso soup came. Like, what. Shouldn’t the soup come before the entrée? Well basically, my family and I ended up here on Christmas Day because Dosa(on Fillmore) was closed. We were debating where to eat and decided to just go in because the restaurant was crowded. WRONG. the restaurant was crowded because service was soo slow. And prices are ridiculous. I’m not a sushi wiz but $ 7.50 for a 6 piece negihamachi is ridics. Even overpriced sushi places in LA isn’t as expensive. And plus the hour long wait… Not the business. At least the food was pretty tasty, not worth it though, ya know? But given it was Christmas Day, I was cheerful and merry anyway.

I have been coming here since, well, before I was born. My mom worked around the corner. If you are looking for a TRUE Japanese restaurant, serene atmosphere, unbelievable service(to the point of feeling like you have your own private server), with simple but perfectly executed meals and the freshest fish imaginable, come here. If you are looking for loud sake bombing and spicy mayo filled rolls(granted, they can be fun), you are in the wrong place. They have been doing what they«do» better than most and for over 35 years(i think). Yes, it’s not cheap(see other reviews), but then again, if you wanted to be at a place like Sushi Rock, you wouldn’t even be in Japantown in the first place now would you?

Nothing special. it’s way too pricy for the taste. The seaweed is tough and chewy. The soft shell crab in the spider roll had absolutely no taste — it felt like something was just fried and put in the sushi. Never going back again…

I hate this place. The service was very friendly and attentive, and the sushi was mediocre, but it was SORIDICULOUSLYOVERPRICED. I felt like I was getting ripped off. I’ve eaten better nigiri for less than half the price nearby at Kushi Tsuru(it’s a few steps away from this place in the ‘restaurant row’ hallway). I’ve also paid less at incredible places like Ichi in Bernal. Please save your time and money and go anywhere else nearby where the prices are reasonable. You’re not getting anything that special here.

2 stars for great, fresh sushi. However it was overly priced @ $ 35 for 12 pieces nigiri. Not worth it if you ask me. Service was ok. I thought the waitress was slow and a bit unattentive with regards to refills of water and tea. But me and the wifey did not regret coming here and will probably come back once we both get a PAYRAISE at work LOL. Overall — recommended if you are craving FRESHSUSHI but you must be willing to pay the hefty price.

This review is for chef Nobu in particular. He’s a very personable sushi chef that remembers his customers and engages in conversation. Over the years, I’ve brought friends, dates, and clients here; Chef Nobu has been a wing man and has helped me with business meals; he is an invaluable person to know. I always order omakase(chef’s choice) and Nobu-san keeps an eye out for our reactions, deciding what to make next based on what we say and what he sees. Most of the dishes he makes are not on the menu and he chooses from the freshest ingredients in the restaurant. I’ve only had good dining experiences here and I’ve also brought along some very picky people. This isn’t the place to go if you have a movie to catch at the Kabuki right away. Several times, I’ve seen people freak out they they can’t eat and run in 10 minutes. Service is not unusually slow here, but this isn’t fast food either.

Don’t try if you want to avoid a headache! The sushi was ok — just overpriced for what you get. A 15 piece sushi/sashimi combo for $ 35 bucks… 8 dollar California rolls… Almost 20 dollars for specialty rolls. Pretty standard, no wow factor. Here was my big issue with the place: We went in a group of 5 and were charged $ 322 for our $ 180 meal. They would not give us an itemized receipt when we asked for one so we have to write everything that we ordered with the pricing and do the math ourself to prove that their total was extrememly off. When we complained and said we didn’t want to pay the 18% tip that was automatically added to our bill, they refused. What a hassle! Thankfully, after much back and forth arguing, we got our bill to the correct amount, but still ended up having to pay the $ 30 dollar tip. I know they have a picture of Keanu Reeves outside the restaurant cause he ate there probably in the 90s after filming Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure… but I’d probably avoid this place if I were you!

It was a strictly platonic man date. Can’t two completely straight guys have a night out and enjoy each other’s company? Admittedly, we picked Fuku at random based on how ridiculous the waits were at the other restaurants.(In hindsight, we should have checked Unilocal reviews!) Small sushi bar with three dedicated, Japanese sushi chefs. All the sashimi rolls were authentic — just fresh fish, rice, and seaweed without any fillers. The Hamachi was just ok, and the Spicy Tuna and Uni were better. All finished with a generous helping of unfiltered sake. The rolls were pricey for the small size, and be aware that the bill comes only as a grand total rather than with itemized prices.(Perhaps that’s why the bill seemed high?) Understandably, it’s J-town, and the prices are higher, but I expected more. Kinda like how I expected to be walked to my car after our strictly platonic man date.

Before heading to Yoshi’s to catch a jazz performance for our friend’s birthday, friend/fellow Unilocaler Kevin W. and I decided to meet up to grab a quick dinner in Japantown. Since there seemed to be a wait at most restaurants, we ended up at Fuku Sushi(random note: I still can’t help but call it Fuk… you get what I mean… haha). Maybe we should have read the reviews though — more one star reviews than any other? Scary. Once we settled into our seats at the bar, I was able to check out their stock of sashimi before it came time to order. Sadly, a couple of their cuts did not look all that enticing(to me at least). With that in mind, I ordered: — Negi Hamachi Maki( ) — generous amount of fish, but I wish the cut was a little more flavorful. Still, decent enough. — Spider Roll( ) — probably the most impressive item of the night because the piece of crab was so large. Large piece = a lot of crab flavor. –Toro Nigiri( ) — toro is always good, but this one didn’t seem as good as what I usually get. Not sure if was a freshness issue or just a bad cut, but I’ve had better. — Unagi Nigiri(no picture) — pretty standard; nothing wrong with it, but nothing special. While the food was mostly fine, how much they charge for some of their items is not so fine. Being Japantown, I understand that things are likely to trend a little higher… but $ 19.50 for a Dragon Roll? $ 17.50 for a Caterpillar Roll? That’s at least a few bucks more than most places in SF(if not more). To make it worse though, it’s not like the service was all that great. It took a while for them to take our order, it took longer for them to make a Spicy Tuna roll, and it took even longer for them to get us our bill(we had to ask three times). When our bill finally arrived(after asking each other what we had ordered), they lumped all of the food under one price, making it tough to see how much they were charging for their«market price» sashimi. Then again, maybe it was for the best — for the amount I fear they charged, I’d rather go back to Kabuto.

My friend & I needed to get some food & was meeting up his friends at Japantown. Suzu was busy so we walked around and decided to check out Fuku-Sushi. At least the service was attentive & kept filling up our water without asking, so that’s a plus, yeah? This place is overpriced, but one of the few places without a wait at Japantown. Though we had to wait like five minutes for the table that said reserved but was never occupied. As others have mentioned this restaurant is overpriced. Agedashi tofu for $ 7, Chicken Karaage for $ 6, & their Rock N Roll roll(unagi and avocado) for $ 7 – 8, that’s what my friend & I shared. We had dinner with two others & one of them ordered a carafe of sake for us all to share. Then the waiter comes back & tells us that there is a $ 10 minimum per person, they just came from eating so they weren’t hungry, but because of the minimum they ordered another carafe of sake, fried oysters and some egg custard-like thing. The chicken karaage portion was pretty small and the pieces looked like small fried rocks(size-wise), I’ve definitely had better. The agedashi tofu was plentiful on the other hand, but the sauce lacked flavor. My friend said the tofu tasted like cheese to him, and yes I called him crazy! His friend and I decided to go halfsies & the bill before splitting it up & adding tip was $ 73 and change for a few appetizers, a roll and 2 rounds of sake… kinda pricey. Needless to say this is the third Japanese restaurant I’ve been to in Japantown that I have not been impressed with. I suppose great Japanese food is not to be found in Japantown!
