I first discovered this store — and their former sister store near Market — because they had an imitation Kelly bag that I liked. I bought several of that same bag from them. It’s true, there’s nothing terribly fashionable about Fashion SF. But I’m still shocked at some of these snooty, negative reviews. There is definitely a lot of cheap, junky imported merchandise here, especially the jewelry. And some of what they have is overpriced, considering the quality(or lack thereof). It’s that kind of place. However, if you look carefully, you can find some really nice handbags — not the highest quality — but some are very stylish and cute. I found a red bag here that I’d been searching for for years. That bag has garnered a ton of compliments. In fact, I bought a second one. Since then, I’ve seen the exact same bag at several hipster boutiques around the Bay Area. Jin is very nice and helpful. She has special ordered items for me and has always followed up promptly. Get a grip, Unilocalers. This is not a stylish store by any means. But you may find some hidden gems if you give it another chance.

Fashion SF is A-OK in my book. [Warning: Unilocal cliché immediately ahead] After walking past it for literally YEARS — each time wondering«How DO they stay in business?» — I was finally compelled to drop in and inspect the goods up close in December. I needed girly gifts for Christmas, and FAST. The jewelry is a no-go, even for this hardcore costume jewelry fiend. It’s really only suitable for little girls playing dress-up. But the scarves? I can’t leave this store without a scarf. So many different styles, colors, and fabrics. Who cares that there’s no designer label? I’m somewhat obsessed with this store now. Rather than automatically walking past it like I did for so many years, I find myself having to exert willpower to resist its lure. I’m trying to limit myself to once a week, but with these prices there’s no danger of going broke even if I were to drop in daily. In a nutshell: If you are in need of a quick girly gift under $ 25, either for yourself or for someone else, you are sure to find something at Fashion SF. Scarves, wallets, hats, bags, key chains, sunglasses, belts… it’s all there.

Ehhh, OK. I’ve only ever purchased sunglasses and a purse from here, although it looks like they have a nice collection of suitcases, bags, scarves, other chotchkies(sp?). It’s hard to avoid with my sunglasses obsession and the fact that my office is approximately 1.5 blocks away from the establishment. The sunglasses are usually around $ 10/pair, but you can definitely bargain with the sweet lady inside if you’re buying more than one item. I usually can get out of there with 2 pairs of sunglasses and a fake bag for around $ 40-$ 50, which isn’t too bad. My only issue is that the sunglasses always break. Maybe that’s my fault though because I never have a proper case for them. Oh well… I’m sure I’ll be back for more aviators after my current ones break!

So I basically pass by this original design store every day while walking to work. The stuff in the window always looks horrendous. But today I decided, much against my better instincts, to venture inside during my lunch break. I donned a fedora, shades which covered the entire upper portion of my face, and a black trench in order to pass unnoticed. Can I just say that this place is unspeakably bad when you’re inside? So bad, in fact, that the offerings may very well scratch the sublime? It’s great. The bags are nasty enough from a distance; up close, you will want to gouge your eyes with an awl. And is that a fingernail caught in the mechanically stitched seam of that fake-ass Gucci saddle bag? Forget I asked. HOWEVER, if you just have to go logo, you should amp up the trashiness, I mean REALLYGOLOGO and be OTT with a blatantly fake purse. Then use the money you saved to buy that asymmetric yohji tunic. Two snaps up for that.

2 stores within 2 blocks. Odd. I think people do shop here because what I wanted was sold out.(I had to walk down to the one on 3rd and market). I don’t care if they are knock offs. Students have to eat and still have the right to look reasonably cute. My bf was horrified by my big flashy pick, but he’s a particular kind of boy(retrosexual) and doesn’t know anything(about fashion that is).
