OK, so the place is small and doesn’t have the widest selection of stuff. Not everything is certified organic and have fancy stickers on them But they do have fresh /fresh enough fruits and vegetables that are cheaper than at Safeway. And as someone who lives /works nearby, having them provide the basics is appreciated. I bought four bananas and two apples for 2.76 today and counted myself lucky!

I stop by D&D every now and again when I’m in the area and am in search of that elusive condiment to make my Asian meal GREAT. The produce never looks very fresh, and it definitely is not organic, but the aisles of noodles, spices, condiments, teas, cookies, etc. more that make up for it. I can spend plenty of time in here just browsing around. I’d probably spend even more time and money if the owner didn’t send one of her employees to silently follow me around any time I walk in the store. Umm, my money is good and I’ve been here dozens of times, so stop with the shadowing, OK?

It’s easy to go into Chinatown and literally get lost trying to find that tiny market where you bought that great little veggie without a name in the English dictionary. I have staked this place out because the 1 California bus stops in front, and after getting my veggies, I can bus right back to FiDi to work. It’s on the corner of Stockton if you are brave enough to catch a 30 in Chinatown during shopping hours. This market has a simple row of fruit and veggies in front, all very fresh, and has the best bagged baby bok choy I have found. Prices are a bit lower than the Mission, except for fruit like bananas and pineapple. The interior is very spartan with no meat and few perishables inside, but it has wide aisles and you can find what you need in dry goods. Lots of Lee Kum Kee sauces in jars and foil pouches, varieties of soy sauce, cookies and snackie things, and it’s a great place to buy small to medium bags of staples like red and black beans at fair prices. The staff is helpful, and it’s never too crowded. It’s certainly not a full service market, but for a Chinatown quick stop, head for that yellow awning.
