If you ever see a place for rent that is owned and operated by City Realty and Investments in San Francisco, run like the Devil is chasing you. The owner is basically a slumlord and has zero interest in making sure his tenants are safe in these run-​down buildings he owns in various neighborhoods in the city. Not only did he lie to me as I was signing the lease about a violent couple that would be living above my young son and me, he bad-​mouthed me to other tenants when I was calling the police on the abusive husband to try and get them out of the building. I did not get a full night of sleep for the ten months they lived above us and finally, they left because of the pressure that we, the tenants, put on them. It was the most horrible experience of my life in the United States. (I have lived in some pretty rough other countries, such as Somalia…) When I moved out, he charged me $ 30 for a dimmer switch — imagine that — after what we went though. I think the plastic tab on the slider had fallen off (a 10 cent piece) I ended up talking to former tenants of that apartment and they all left traumatized before me. He would raise the rent every time… so it worked for him having people upstairs running the people below them out…
