This review is for the Toisanese dumplings. It’s Chinese New Year. We’re looking for the goodies that my grandmother used to make. We decided to brave Chinatown to see if we would be able to find Toisanese treats to celebration Chinese New Year and stumbled upon Broadway Dim Sim. Specifically, we were looking for the«ham gai loong» — the flat, salty version of the football dumplings«ham sui gok». The«Ham Gai Loong» was perfectly fried, freshly made and huge! My mother raved about how the oil stayed only on the outside of the skin, so it wasn’t too oily inside. The filling was perfectly seasoned. Not too sweet, not too salty, with the salted turnips inside. Not only did they have«Ham Gai Loong», they also had another rare Toisanese treat — «Ham Gai Gor». This is the steamed version of the«Ham Gai Loong». Just as delicious, with less oil. You’ll like this place if you’re looking for these rare Toisanese treats!

After completing my weekly shopping in Chinatown, it was mid-afternoon and it was time for some lunch. But my go-to restaurant was closed for the Mid-Autumn Festival so I decided to get a quick bite and decided to check out Broadway Dim Sum.
I ordered three deep fried stuffed dumplings. They were crispy, but were very greasy. One of the specials posted on the wall was beef stew ho fun noodle soup. There were only a few pieces of beef and tripe, but it was bland and the broth was flavorless as well. Yes, the food was inexpensive, but the taste and quality was sub-par. Much better options in Chinatown.

This is where I usually go to get my baked/steamed buns. My sister absolutely loves the cocktail buns(oblong, baked, with coconut and sugar filling) and the the bbq pork buns(baked). Found out today that they up the prices from $ 1.60ish to $ 2 for 4 of of the cocktail and pineapple buns… could also be my imagination but I feel like I’ve definitely seen them bigger. Such is life I guess.

Don’t ever come here ! There are much better dim sum restaurants in the area. They over charge you if you are not Chinese. It sounds bad, but it’s true. Don’t be taken advantage of. Go somewhere else. I would give a lower rating if I could.

I had some dim sum here and egg tarts. They were absolutely delicious. The restaurant was just dirty.

Fast, cheap, greasy eats. 2.5 stars for LATENIGHTDRUNKENMUNCHIES. AMBIANCE: We stopped by here after NYE festivities(our first choice, New Sun Hong Kong, told us «we don’t know how long the wait is»). This place reminds me of some of the late night cafes in Hong Kong, so I guess points for ambiance authenticity. Expect harsh lighting, sticky-ish table tops, and drunk crowds if you dine here past midnight. SERVICE: Terse, but friendly-ish. A lot of «-ish» … Everything was very meh. FOOD: We were told they had run out of ho-fun noodles as well as jook. WHAAAT?! That was all that we were craving(beef chow fun and any kind of jook). Super sad. — Salty fish & chicken fried rice: Super duper grease-tastic. Hit the spot, but man… sooo oily. — Wonton noodle soup: Wontons were surprisingly meaty. Broth is thin and flavorless. — Seafood pan fried egg noodles: Fine. Not memorable. — Singapore style rice noodles: Ehh… I don’t remember anything about this dish. OVERALL: Food was cheap… 4 entrée dishes fed SEVEN(yes, 7) people for $ 24(including tax & tip). Holy moly. However, you do get what you pay for. I wasn’t super drunk, but I also wasn’t really in a position to complain about mediocre food quality. What WAS outrageous to me was the fact that they had run out of several key drunk-munchie-craved items! Blasphemy! Hence the 2.5 star(rounded down) rating.

I’m giving 5 stars for the black sesame mochi. Perfect in size(big), right amount of sugar taste(not filled with sugar), you can actual taste the sesame(not pasty, makes it chewy), and right amount of squishyness(will stay squishy for a few days, not hard as a rock). The price is right! A little bit of mochi heaven. I like their pan fried buns and more or less everything else. I go in and I want to buy everything else. Cash only.

walking around the city yesterday with two young kids and we were all hot, cranky and hungry so after finding a place we could sit down we got some food. potstickers were dried up as all get out. the rest of the assortment we got was ok tasting, and if we develop food poisoning in the next few hours I wouldn’t be surprised. pretty dirty and the bathroom even worse. BUT it fed our family of 4 for under $ 15 update: yay no one got sick ;)

Pricing: Excellent. Come in right before they close, the proprietress just wants to get rid of everything. Quality: Good. Definitely not the best I have had. Turnaround: Excellent. Everything on display is up for grabs. Service: Poor-Good. Yup, the proprietress is racist. We come here close to closing time and get enough food to feed a family of four for an entire week for about $ 50. This place has a variety of simple dim sum, chow mein/fun, entrees, and buns to choose, but I would not put my finger on the food being fresh here. Just be careful of the tofu items as they tend to spoil the fastest and remember to refrigerate food that are not going to be eaten soon. At the end of the day, the proprietress bags and boxes all the food and displays them along the display racks for patrons to come and grab. Sometimes, she might still have other stuff in the kitchen so ask and see, but if she does not have something, do not expect her to make a new batch. They are closing for goodness sake. The more you buy, the better the deal. In fact, she will encourage you to keep buying even if her pricing gets super cheap. She is honest in that aspect because one time I ordered a specific type of bun that goes for $ 1/bun, but she charged me $ 5 for 10. However, after bagging everything, she felt that was not good enough of a deal and threw in a baggie of assorted fried dumplings. This all sounds great, except this proprietress is a little racist or have a language barrier if I want to say this nicer. I am Chinese so we trade Cantonese rapport freely and because of this rapport, she gets into a good mood and gives me all the awesome deals. Anyone else coming not speaking Chinese will still get a good deal, but she will definitely not be paying as much attention to them nor will she give them as much food.

I was desperately craving Chinese food, had little money, and no car. I had to act quick! As I swiftly walked down the street I saw I entered the outskirts of Chinatown. I saw multiple people outside Broadway Dim Sum and walked inside with no hesitation. I didn’t have any high expectations for a random place I walk into but this was repulsive. The décor was old and dirty, the dim sum looked old and stale, I should have just walked out but I was too hungry to do that. I ordered the BBQ Pork Buns and the Pork Sui Mai. The lady told me there was no Sui Mai left so I pointed to the tray of fried rice on the counter(it looked decent). I also ordered one of those Chinese Chrysanthemum Tea drinks. She gave me my order and I sat down excitedly, FINALLY about to eat. I raised the fork to my mouth full of the fried rice… YUCK! It tasted old, greasy, and worst of all, ITWASROOMTEMP!!! As I laid the rice aside, I bit into my very large pork bun. This was OKAY. It had flavor and the meat was mediocre. I just felt sick because like the rice, it was room temperature. Why two stars and not one? The women was kind, good prices, and the Chrysanthemum Tea was nice.

About average for dim sum in a several-block radius. There’s probably better but my experience of the area is limited to this and one other on a recent trip.

Take out Dim Sum… its pretty average, though the ladies here always convinces me to buy more. Buy more, for less they say… then I leave with a huge takeout box of dim sum and have no idea how it happened. I tend to come here after 3PM, when they DO have a stated discount on their foods. Its no the best, but for the price it’s not bad. Though if you get there a lot later than 3, sometimes the dim sum is soggy and the filling falls out. And when there’s a huge line at Good Mong Kok and I’m unwilling to wait… this is an alternative. I’d say the thing I like here is the ‘silver needle noodles’ but its not to die for. Wait. Why did I say I came here again? Right. Price. Hurm.

Wow why do I have to face this much animosity to give these people business??? We tried to get a few items and they nearly bit our heads off. It was ridiculous. I only tried the shu mai, so much meat! And the beef noodle roll was really hearty.

Came here with my parents the other week while we were in CT. My parents were familiar with this spot, but I wasn’t. We went kind of late so it was near the end of the day but they still had a lot of stuff out. kind of sketchy… but Broadway Dim Sum proved me wrong. their dim sum is pretty good and has a bunch of flavor … We ordered TONS. and I do mean TONS of trays of cheung fun. we got beef and shrimp. my mom basically got a sweet deal since it was near the end of the day. My parents also ordered a bunch of various buns. and from word of mouth … they seem to be pretty good as well.

Dim Sum is best when steamed in those little bamboo steamers. I can settle for those large metal steamers that Dim Sum fast food joints use, but this place doesn’t even do that. They just lay everything out and microwave it when you order… if even that. The Dim Sum itself isn’t bad, but not that great either. The microwave… not cool.

I thought I really liked this place and I thought I’d give them 4 stars at first… until our last visit 2 weeks ago. Actually, I do enjoy their steamed pork buns, plain buns(my fiancé and I are weird, we like eating«charsiu-less» baos), and onion buns. I can buy a whole box of goodies for super duper cheap. That’s all I’ve bought so far, so I really cant complain. However, the very one time we actually ate inside, we weren’t too thrilled about the stack, about chest high, of the cartons of eggs. On the boxes, it said«KEEPREFRIGERATED» or something of the sort. They were just sitting there, in the middle of the dining room. God knows how long they’ve been sitting out there. I wish I didn’t them see them. Oh wells. I’ll stick with ordering my charsiu-less baos, pork buns, and onion buns. So far I haven’t had any stomach aches or anything so I guess things have been OK. Suffice to say, I’ll be back to buy my certain staples. lol

My expectations for cheap, to-go, dim sum are really low. All I ask is that you cook it through and through. Well you didn’t and when I took my first bite into your siu mai and felt the taste and texture of raw pork in the middle, you lost me. I still can’t get rid of the memory of that«string» of raw pork stuck between my teeth. To everyone else, save yourself the distress and head accross the street to Yummy BBQ Kitchen.

As we were walking towards North Beach, we smelled something very nice… and there aren’t many places that smell nice in the China town area. It smelled like fresh baked bread. Through the window of this small bakery, you’ll see a whole bunch of different dim sum dishes. These dishes had good-sized portions, although most of them looked like they were sitting out for a while. The potstickers and sio mai didn’t look appetizing with their dry and hard looking wrappers. Once we walked in, the lady behind the counter was throwing out discount prices left and right. I don’t blame her for that, since they have to get rid of so much food. I finally said yes to the sio pao which was just ok. They could do without the vegetables in the bun. We were also a sucker for a bean and custard dessert thingy, which wasn’t all that. Then a hot tray comes out from the back… it was their soft and fresh coconut buns. Pretty good… melted in my mouth! These buns had a buttery sweetness to them with shredded coconut inside. These were 50 cents each, but instead she sold 5 of them for $ 2. Oooohh what a bargain! The place was cluttered and messy, not at all attractive. I wouldn’t go there for their dim sum, but if I’m lucky again to catch fresh baked goods out from the oven, I’ll stop in!

Let me preface this review with I have eaten at a lot of crappy places! So it is with the utmost confidence that I rate this place one of the all time worse places I have ever eaten… why you might ask… lets start off with the lukewarm…(and by lukewarm, I mean the exact temperature that germs and bacteria thrive at!) Dim Sum. Do not fret, if you do not like cold dim sum they will microwave it for you! After you are handed your paper plate full of Crap Sum, you grab a seat. If you would like pepper or soy, look around the place because these are in scarce supply! If you see one, please do not feel the need to ask for it… just grab it off the table and not return it. I believe this is a custom at this establishment. My one recommendation for this place is that you ask for a discard plate(see picture above)… This way you will not have to mingle the food you are eating with the food you already put in your mouth… and then spit back out because it was TOO enjoyable to swallow! So if you ever find yourself on Broadway… and you are REALLY hungry… stop by this place… and you will loose your appetite.
