I kept stopping by here when I was around the Ferry Building to try out Black Jet Baking’s pop tarts that I’ve been told are amazing. Breaking Bread’s hours weren’t very friendly to my visits, unfortunately, but I finally made my way there in the morning and found them open. Imagine my disappointment when I was told they no longer sell the pop tarts. :(I was too sad to try anything else and left with a growling stomach. Everything looked clean, but my spouse said it was cheaper to get a breakfast sandwich from Subway down the street, so maybe this place should really be $$.

I would not recommend this place. Ordered a salmon salad and it was gross. Salmon was so dry it was like a hockey puck. Yes it looks fresh with their made to order sandwiches and salads but the quality of the ingredients are sub par. I think their prices attract the Fidi and downtown crowd but you get what you pay for. The dressing they used make it drown and soggy. Yuck. If you want a crisp crunchy fresh salad this is not the place to go. Your better off going to the ferry building and paying a few dollars more for quality.

The sandwiches here are terrific. For me, I’ve deducted stars for the(1) order lines, which are disordered somewhat chaotic and the(2)(sometimes) surly food preparers, and(3) the PAINFULLY slow check-out process. The line to get out is as long as the line to order. Despite the tasty food, it’s such a cluster to get in and out that it’s not really worth the time and effort. The food here is on the pricey side; if I’m expected to pay premium, I(and every other customer) deserves a premium experience. The worst component is the cashier experience. Please, BB, I implore you to fix the check-out process.

My mouth is still singing from the flavors of warm Brie, caramelized onions and pesto as I write this review. Yes, that is a great sandwich, and with a cup of fresh, flavorful soup for $ 10, this place is not only offering one of the better deals in the FiDi, but has reminded me how much I love a good sandwich. I ate here two days in a row. The guys at the hot sandwich bar are the sweetest. Today is Friday, and I came in at 1:30 pm and they were literally almost out of food. As if a swarm of locusts had descended upon the restaurant at lunch hour, eating everything in sight. But my brie sandwich(half of one) was a survivor. I got the last one! Catch them while you can!

Not bad but not great either. I wish I knew there were more spots to eat right across the street at the Ferry Building!!! Price was great for San Fran and the staff were very nice! The meal hit the spot. What I had: turkey bacon and Swiss panini and a fruit salad.

Lunch under $ 10: salad was pretty large, with a good amount of chicken. however, there wasn’t much of a wow factor here. In a pinch, it’s definitely a solid place to come to for salads. I’ll have to try their sandwiches next time.

To be honest, I was quite(pleasantly) surprised with breaking bread. I got a roasted vegetable salad with chicken and was a little hesitant because salads are always so expensive for such small portions. However, I paid($ 11) and this salad was HUGE. I only ate half of it. It was really tasty too so I think that this was a good deal. They also serve breakfast, sandwiches, and deli sides!

I was searching for a relatively inexpensive place to get sandwiches on my way to work, and I stumbled across Breaking Bread. I walked in and was immediately confused by where I was supposed to order, whether at the cashier or the food counters, because there are two entrances into the deli. I ordered a sandwich with sliced rib eye and horseradish which was pretty good! They were kind enough to customize a sandwich for my coworker. The people who work here are super friendly. Their English is not the best, so they asked me to repeat my order three different times after I had ordered. While I prefer going to Buckhorn Grill(next door) for food, Breaking Bread was a more portable option on my way to work. If I was working in the area again, I would probably make this my go-to place for sandwiches. Otherwise, I think the sandwiches and service are average.

I really enjoy this place for lunch! Their sandwiches and tomato soup is SOGOOD. Salty, but good. They also have a salad bar line, where you build your own salad. I did that once, and the ingredients are relatively fresh. CHeaper than Mixt Greens.

On a recent visit I sampled the rib eye sandwich(cold), which is really just marketing speak for a roast beef sandwich. Overall the sandwich was excellent, but the odd low point was the actual meat. It was a bit dry. That said, the rest of the top notch ingredients salvaged the sandwich and made it an overall excellent experience. The bread was crunchy on the outside with a soft interior. The greens were fresh, varied and in the right proportion. The cheese and horse radish sauce added much needed richness and moisture. Loved every moment of this one, will be back to sample other options. Nice cost/size for the area.

The queue system here is a bit confusing since you order from separate lines for food then you pay somewhere off in the distance, but the food is not bad, and a half salad half soup combo is a fair deal for lunch in terms of pricing and quality. There’s some seating available inside and outside as well if you are with a friend and want to have a casual lunch. Would come back for sure!

This is one of those places where you would grab breakfast or lunch on a work day, but never go out of your way to eat there unless you worked nearby. That being said, Breaking Bread makes a delicious breakfast burrito and appears to do very good corporate catering. We ate there a couple times as it was near our hotel, but seems like a solid option for a «lunch place» in the Embarcadero Center.

Good sandwiches, good view! If sandwiches do it for you, you’ll like this place. That is not to say that they only do sandwiches, no! But their sandwiches are good(e.g. The Cuban). On a nice sunny day, grab one, step outside to one of those benches in Justin Herman Plaza, watch people, explore the view, and enjoy your sandwich! Or if you are a workaholic, take the damned sandwich to your office and eat at your desk, but it’ll be a waste of scenery I tell you! The salads are pretty reliable too. If you are a calorie conscious kind of person, go with one of their salads. There you have it! What else do you need?!

A dependable spot to grab a sandwich for lunch albeit not necessarily a standout spot — Breaking Bread has all the typical lunchtime staples of sandwiches, soups, and salads with the expected long line of hungry office workers. I like the roast beef sandwich with caramelized onions, horseraddish, and white cheddar as a default. It’s a classic combination and the sandwiches are well assembled so they hold up well to the walk back to the desk. The turkey, bacon, avacado with the pesto mayo sandwich is another good choice to have. Never had the salads here but you can build your own. The lines typically dissuade me though. All things considered, Breaking bread is a decent spot for lunch(and they cater too) but if I’m going to be in a long lunch line, my heart is with Focaccia just around the block.

Yummy, freshly made sandwiches. Yes, they’re a bit«pricey,» but they’re well worth their cost. The Caprese Sandwich ain’t no joke! This sandwich is great all year but it’s particularly tasty in the summer when the tomatoes are in season. Try it for lunch.

Conveniently located right outside Justin Herman Plaza, I had the natural roast turkey, hobbs bacon and avocado with pesto mayo sandwich. Excellent sandwich. I went here versus a Lee’s Sandwiches because when I go to Lee’s I always say afterward«I could have made that sandwich at home». My sandwich at Breaking Bread would have taken a lot of effort if I attempted to make this at home and I probably still would not have come close. The bread and the homemade spread gives them that edge.

Since I work in the Embarcadero Center, this is my go-to place for salads, but beware, the lines are extremely long! The options to customize your salads are plentiful, and the ingredients are pretty fresh. I appreciate the compostable containers! I took my family here one day and hear that the paninis are also worth your while too. Thanks Breaking Bread for being a great lunch place where I can happily be a regular!

Great breakfast sandwich — the egg, ham, and cheese on a bagel was very good and made fresh — the bagel was the closest to a nyc bagel I’ve had– nice! At $ 6 I’d say it’s worth it for the quality. The whole store smells of delicious baked bread and the sandwich/ingredients all look great — I’ll have to try the sandwiches next time. It’s not a huge store — there’s limited seating and a good chunk is taken up by catering orders. The staff was friendly and my order came out quick. Convenient location within the embarcadero shopping center.

JESSE, WEHAVETOCOOKBREAKFAST. our hotel was located nearby, and there honestly wasn’t much that was open for breakfast — including one place that had high Unilocal ratings but was effectively just a counter to order from. so we kept trudging along, and found a friendly security guard who pointed us to Breaking Bread. the breakfast burrito took a bit long to make, but stuffed with chorizo and scrambled eggs and so worth it. an excellent way to kick off a day in San Francisco. their coffee was on point, consistently good(I tried it on two other occasions). there’s some seating in here, and more in the main lobby that houses several other delis and shops. pricing is pretty fair and they have a huge selection of salads, sandwiches, and even a hot oatmeal bar.

The day after our work holiday parties, my company always gets us breakfast. We decided on Breaking Bread since it delivers. Almost everyone at work got a breakfast burrito, but I decided to get Breakfast Scramble: Italian sausage, spinach, mushrooms, and onions, served with rustic potatoes and wheat toast. The scramble was a little bland. It needed more seasoning. Plus, I had added cheese to it and there wasn’t any. Also, the rustic potatoes were a little undercooked. Since I only ate half of my order for breakfast, the potatoes got better with reheating for lunch. The toast was dry which I didn’t prefer. I wish they gave us butter. After drinking the night away, the eggs did satisfy my morning hunger. But I think I should have ordered a breakfast burrito like everyone else. My coworkers seemed to have enjoyed their food. If we get breakfast from here next year, I will definitely go that route!
