Great place to play some baseball. Make sure you get your permit.

Awesome patch of grass near my house, love walking through here in the morning, only way it could be better if there was more trees and less grass…

The 4 stars aren’t necessarily for the field itself, it’s not now nor has it really ever been the most well-maintained baseball field imaginable. The rating is more for the fact that if you grew up playing baseball in The City, then Big Rec is one of the true meccas for baseball. I played countless Joe DiMaggio summer league games on these 2 fields, along with some epic SHC-SI battles in front of over a thousand spectators. Something about the place just makes it the perfect place to play in my opinion. Just recently started Playing in an adult baseball League and first game was at Big Rec, the field wasn’t in good shape, the infield was like concrete, but just being out there felt great.

De-facto doggie park for folks in the neighborhood, it’s a wide and spacious expanse of green that’s fairly sheltered from the wind — sometimes it’s warmer at Big Rec than in the foggy Inner Sunset avenues directly across from it. It has well-maintained and clean bathrooms and one can rent the raquetball courts off in the corner. A word to dog-owners who like to let their dogs off-leash — on fairly rare occasions rangers will sweep along the narrow lanes traversing the park — and ticket those without their pups attached to a lead.

On slow weekends — on my way to Hippie Hill — I love to sit on the bleachers overlooking Golden Gate Big Rec Baseball Diamond and just watch. There are always people playing baseball over here on nice days. Whether it be an organized game or just kids goofing around. It’s an outstanding resource for the community, which is why I’m so surprised that there aren’t any reviews for this field. The bleachers are well kept and clean. The field is well manicured and open. And the sun usually lights this field just right — for passerbys with their dogs and kids in tow. If you’re looking for something low-key to do on a weekend — I highly suggest stopping by here to take in a casual game, stopping by to start your own game, or just stopping by to sit on the bleachers and soak up Golden Gate Park’s glory. Trust.
