I live right down the street and was looking for a late night bite with the boyfriend before going to a friend’s to drink. So since this place had just opened up we decided to check it out. Sadly I didn’t bother to check what time they had closed and had showed up 5 minutes before closing. While I knew that we should have just tried another place, the owner graciously let us in along with another couple for dinner. They were very polite and quick about it. Not annoyed, like I“m sure I would be if I was closing up shop. We order the KFC, Spicy rice cakes and Jap Chae. The food came quickly, and was delightful. Good portions for the price we paid. The chicken was very crispy, and although not crazily sauced up, still tasted very good. Rice cakes were perfectly chewy and just spicy enough. Jap Chae was good as well. I’ve tried a few Korean restaurants in the area and I’m glad that this one is so close to home. While each one has their strengths, this little gem definitely caught my eye for the comforting atmosphere of the restaurant, and hospitality of the management. I hope to see this place stick around.

Went here for the first time tonight and it was pretty good. Solid 3 stars! We got the Beef Bibimbap and the Kimchee Fried Rice with fried egg and spam. My big plate of fried rice was yummy and my boyfriend seemed happy with his bibimbap. The host/server was really nice and she brought us a complimentary plate of JapChae. That was sweet and the noodles were good. I’d definitely order those next time. The appetizer portion is only $ 6! They’d be delicious with some kalbi ribs. I hope this place sticks around. It’s a nice option to have on Noriega.

Anche Café’s décor offers no hint they serve korean food. one section can be mistaken for a tea drinking area. music: various instrumentals, vocals. menu: breakfast, sammies, tonkatsu/katsu, lunch specials, selected korean entrees eats: kalbi combo(7.99) –tasty japchae –nice rice –rib eye used instead of short rib for kalbi beef not as juicy, a little chewy lunch combo a good value,(4 stars) other choices: katsu, tonkatsu. quality –almost 3 stars. –nice tea given(refilled too). banchan: –no banchan(side dishes) served. –slight aftertaste. waitress says no msg used. home broth of seaweed, anchovy, etc, used for sauce. –food here more fusion than korean. not sure what kind of fusion though… –prompt, polite, inquisitive service.

When I first saw the new storefront sign before it opened, I felt bad that it meant the previous business(Fu Noodle House) closed up. At the same time, I became excited about a new Korean restaurant in my part of the City, especially one that said«Korean Bistro». Maybe I should have made a better interpretation of what«bistro» mean, that might have saved me some of the disappointment experienced. One night last week my friend asked about having dinner in the Sunset and this was the restaurant I suggested. When we went in, sat down, and looked at the menu, my first feeling was that we should have studied the menu first before coming inside. The menu was very short, didn’t have most of the items I would’ve associated with a Korean restaurant such as tofu or soy bean pastes. The only items they had in the category were stone-bowl bibimbap and a couple of ramen items. We settled for a bibimbap and it was far from fulfilling in taste. Also, per staff recommendation, we ordered the seafood pancake and that, to me, was chewy and very tasteful. I think I’ve gotten better ones served complimentary alongside banchis at another Korean restaurant in the Sunset.(Speaking of which, if you come looking for banchis or the small plates containing kimchi and such, forget it. None was served.) I feel bad being harsh but I’m just writing based on what I thought. The staff is nice and I see they put a lot of effort into a nice remodel job. I hope they succeed but most likely I will not return. If I do, it will be to give them another chance by trying out one of their ramen item.

I am a huge glutton. I can polish off a plate of fried chicken like nobody’s business. So it says a lot when if I eat only two pieces of chicken and stop there. I hated that the KFC came out as a whole chicken wing with the drumstick, flat part and pointy part(ya I know they have names, I just don’t know what they are) all connected together. This makes it messy and difficult to eat. I also did not like that they used gochujang as the sauce. I much prefer kanpoongki with candied crunch. Which is probably the bastard American version. The seafood pancake was soggy and boring. I had high hopes for this place. Maybe they will improve.

I’m giving it a 3 star b/c I really liked the waitstaff, hostess, décor… but we probably won’t be back for the food. We rushed over to try this new, beautiful, clean, little restaurant. You can tell right away that much love and thought was put into this place. But the food for us was a big miss. The large portioned Seafood Pancake $ 12.95 was packed full of good ingredients and beautiful to the eye… but it was bland, and a bit doughy, slightly undercooked batter. I don’t know how they can cook it more though, because the bits of seafood in it were done just right. There was an accompanying soysauce-like dipping sauce in a small dish which we had to rely on totally to give the dish some flavor. A smaller portion of the pancake at a lower lunch price would be better too. We did not finish it. The hostess is right though, this pancake is much less greasy that the traditional pancakes. The big disappointment was the BBQ Beef Clay Pot Bibim-Bab $ 11.95. It was served in a small flat beautiful ceramic pan with a thin ½ «or so, layer of rice on the bottom… some of the bottom of the rice was scorched to a light crunch, topped with raw shreds of red and green cabbage, a few cut pieces of romaine lettuce and small rectangle pieces of thin beef, accompanied on the side by a small dish of Korean chili bean paste? It was like eating a cold salad, mixed with some white rice, cold beef with chili bean paste as the dressing. We did tell the hostess, when asked, that we were a bit disappointed. That’s not even close to our idea of bibimbap. She said they do not use MSG and try to go for the fresh light taste and that particular dish was very popular. We were the only ones seated in the entire lunch hour, except one take out. She offered to cook it a more traditional way for us if we requested it, «next time» we came back. The bill for lunch for the 2 of us with one tea, were a few coins less than $ 30 w/tax. It was an overall disappointment and unsatisfying. Maybe we were just too excited and expected something really WOW from such a cute place. The hostess could have offered us a little sample of dessert or something on the house to try… show me something good… to offset the disappointment and to encourage us to come and give them another try… a piece of chicken wing? I was too cheap to pay $ 9.95 for 9 chicken wings when on Irving Street, where they are offering 10 pcs of salt and pepper chicken wings for $ 5. Don’t get me wrong, I want them to be successful. Maybe we just ordered the wrong items to try.

Because I work a block away, I’ve seen a few businesses struggle to survive in this tiny spot. This spot is where the old hawaiian BBQ restaurant used to be. Then it turned into Fu’s Noodle House. Then it became Quickly’s plus the previous 2. Then someone bought it out. After a short year, he finally realized that cramming 3 different types of businesses into that one tiny space was a bad idea. Thank goodness because then this little korean bistro gem came along. The first thing I noticed was the renovation of the place. It is modern and chic. inviting. Clean. Lots of natural light(previous owners covered up the windows w/large menus). And definitely makes better use of the space than the previous owners. I actually enjoyed sitting in the restaurant while enjoying my food because it has a coffee shop/café feel to it. The jazzy lounge music playing in the background helped too. Now the food. The food was not bad. I over ordered as this was the first time and I wanted to try different things. I ordered 3 dishes: Seafood pancake, Fried Chicken, and Kalbi over rice. All 3 met expectations but nothing really blew me away except for maybe the seafood pancake which had a lot more seafood in it than most korean places that serve this dish and it was big enough to feed at least 2 people. The fried chicken was tasty and nicely fried(a light crispy) but I personally would have liked more sauce. The portion size was big enough for 3 or more for sharing. I would say like 10 wings or so. The kalbi(3 pieces) were a little thin for my preference but tasted like how kalbi usually tastes. However, I must say the food came out very quick. This might be because we were the only customers in there at the time. The only complaint I have w/this place is that price is probably a dollar or more over than what should be charged but hey, it is a bistro type of place where you get forks, knives, and spoons instead of chopsticks. The quality is also a bit better than some of the cheaper places. Food tasted fresh and flavors were nice and light. The seafood pancake and fried chicken cost about $ 10 each and the kalbi over rice was about $ 12 – 13. PS. $ 20 min on credit cards. I would probably go back and try some of the smaller items like their kalbi sandwich and fries for lunch next time. I also wish they had a wider selection of drinks(as in coffee and tea but I can see this place turning into a soju place) and also in desserts/snacks for people like me who like to hangout in small coffee shops studying, doing work, or just people watching.
