The SPINE: Dr Aldous Tam is a traumatologist who specializes in sports injuries, sciatica and arthritic pain. While most health practitioners will boast how they’re the best in the field, it’s hard to find one who’s treatment is as reliable as their word. When it came to my sciatica from basketball(injured at 29), Dr Tam’s treatment eliminated pain and after 6 weekly visits(+self-rehabilitation), helped me regain my full range of motion for a year and a half now. He speaks both English and Cantonese and sees patients by appointment. Here’s my story… The TREATMENT: I am an active body and it’s debilitating and demoralizing when you experience pain doing the simplest tasks like: getting into your car or working at your desk. How many doctor’s offices does it take to find one that will fix you? For me, it took 6, including Eastern and Western medicine, PT and Chiro. Seems like no matter which method I try, I couldn’t get the same pain relief and long term benefits that I get from Dr Tam’s treatment. Dr Tam studied traumatology in Hong Kong has been treating my family’s injuries for 20 years. For me, he uses a combination of heat therapy, heated glass cups, massage, spinal adjustments and finally a medicine patch of Chinese herbs to wear overnight(my least favorite part since I can’t bend much and I smell like a woodland creature all night). Your treatment may vary. Before you leave, he’ll give you exercise and dietary suggestions that fit your lifestyle. What brought me back to his office was his ability to listen, his relaxed cadence and a genuine attitude to help restore the quality of life. He never tries to rush you out his office. What kept me OUT of his office were the results. After 6 weekly visits the pain was virtually gone and I was comfortable enough to rehab on my own. His office is decorated like a typical first-generation Chinese immigrant’s home; clean, but lacks a consistent color scheme and matching furniture, but still as comfortable as home nonetheless. When you’re recovering from injury, it helps to have a practitioner on your team who will not only fix you, but also provides a strategy to stay healthy. Dr Tam is my guy.
