Mr. Tang – Professional Yard Service

This is a very long overdue review for my gardeners, Mr. Hung Tang and his brother also Mr. Hung Tang! In Vietnamese language their names are in fact different due to accents on particular letters indicating how their names are pronounced (this is true for other Asian languages as well). But, when translated to written English characters, both brothers have the exact same name.
I found them when a small plastic sandwich bag with a folded advertisement along with some pebbles inside appeared on my driveway in 1995. I had just started my software consulting career and really needed help with my lawn maintenance and yard work. Man. .. have they delivered!
Mr. Tang and Mr. Tang have come every Monday — without fail — to take care of my lawn for eighteen, read ‘em, 18 years.
My very large, corner lot, front lawn is an effort even for professional gardeners. I also have 33 flowering quince shrubs around the perimeter of my property and two tree roses that they have helped me with through the years. Mr. Tang (s) also pulls or sprays all my weeds on my entire front property and has also gone into my large backyard and pulled those weeds when necessary as well. They do an excellent job of mowing, edging, and lightly fertilizing my lawn.
They have also repaired my sprinkler system many times. In addition to all that, they replaced my entire brick walkway tracing through my lawn towards my front door; All at extremely low cost every time.
In fact, Mr. Tang has never raised their price on their services to me the entire time! About ten years ago I began giving them significant tips on every payment and I raised my tipping level again a couple years ago. Yet, on their bill to me they still charge the same exact price we began with in 1995 — truly unbelievable.
You need to know something very special about these men.
When I went through my personal trauma three years ago, I did nothing to take care of myself or my home for over one full year. I paid NO bills, did not sleep, and at some point nearly died. I couldn’t take care of anything much less my lawn. I don’t know to this day how Mr. Tang knew something was wrong, but he did. All I knew was that my lawn was cared for and from the outside of my house, no neighbor could externally see anything was different.
When I was finally able to ask for help from someone with my over one year’s worth of mail piled up in my dining room, we found over 12 monthly billing statements from Mr. Tang. They had labored and maintained my yard for ONE YEAR without payment, not knowing if they would ever get paid, and not once called, wrote, or asked IF they would ever get payment. I cried then. .. and it still brings tears to my eyes now as I write this review.
When I saw Mr. Tang next, I handed him his 12 billing invoices along with full payment plus one year’s worth of tips. .. plus I added 6 months payment & tips in advance. He smiled. Then, I asked why he had done all that for me? Mr. Tang replied, «because I knew you were in trouble, and I am your friend.»
Mind you that we had not spoken very much or had much contact at all in all those years preceding. I cannot begin to express how deeply moved and grateful I was, and still am. I thank God everyday for showing me that kindness of this magnitude lives in our world.
So, there is this story. .. not merely of two brothers who have done outstanding, ultimately reliable, and rock solid consistent work for my lawn and yard — but a story of courage, compassion, and sacrifice in the only way they knew how.
