I was shocked by Dr. McDermott’s insensitive abrupt bedside manner and his blatant irritation when I asked questions about the nature of my injury. I was attempting to educate myself when he told me he didn’t have time to discuss what I could or could not do. I was asking about my limitations because I have no pain and therefore I have no indicator of what I should or should not do. He said that I obviously don’t understand what it means to have a broken bone. He was not receptive to my inquiries and was incredibly negative about the healing process. I asked if I may heal faster because I am young, fit and healthy. He said that he didn’t care how healthy I was and that an adult bone takes a set amount of time to heal regardless of lifestyle choices. It was not the information he provided that upset me, rather the way in which he provided it. Additionally he expressed personal opinions in an unprofessional manner. He even suggested that I indulge in alcohol rather than marijuana during the healing process. Its one thing to recommend that a patient avoid a substance that could potentially be detrimental to the healing, but quite another to encourage use of another harmful substance. I was appalled by my two experiences with this doctor and will not return to see him. I would rather remove my cast with a chain saw than be treated by him.
