I went here for a poetry reading and it was a great experience as both a performer myself, and as an audience member. The sound carried beautifully, without a mic. The Rapp Saloon is a lovely performing arts studio with a few brick walls and smooth wooden floor. It is a common space within the Santa Monica international hostel. It’s a great location in the middle of all the liveliness of the city. Very respectable venue.

the rapp saloon is a historic building in santa monica. built in the late 1800’s it was a saloon of the same name for many years until it closed down. it remained closed down until the international youth hosteling took over its maintenance and has kept it up ever since. for the last six years the rapp saloon has served every friday night as a place for poets and writers to come share their work outloud. alot of old school poets frequent this place and it’s considered one of the most respectable venues in los angeles. not to mention one of the most generous. it gives readers an average of 8 minutes on stage. most give you anywhere between 3 to 5 minutes. sign in starts at 7:30pm every friday and reading begins at 8pm. if you’ve got the words, they’ve got the space and time. now let your inner bukowski shine.
