So I’m a little outta the loop. Fred Segal isn’t here anymore. It moved into the«expansion location» across the street. I’ve never been solvent enough to shop at Fred Segal but went to a school where people did. Fred Segal was IT in the 1980s for women in West LA or Melrose. Their September sales were legendary because they didn’t discount things much all year-round. It was like the summer pre-season Nordstrom sale for which women practically camped out at the Westside Pavilion. I was at the urgent care(yet again) and the wait was long so Mom and I walked to Blue Daisy. The line was out the door because a server or two didn’t come in and they did not expect such a crowd on Monday at 10:30AM. I remembered Fred Segal had a café(well, Mom did) so we went into Buttercup, not remembering the café across the street. It’s HUGE! I can’t afford this sort of thing but for those who can, this is the ABC of Los Angeles(Manhattan rug store). I said this to the rug specialist and he said, «Oh the owner used to own ABC in Chelsea…» It turns out that the owner of Buttercup was married to the owner of ABC, which they co-owned and ran. One bought out the other in the divorce and then the LA spouse opened this. I just found a silk/wool rug(8 by 10) in the basement on W 19th for 599. Should have been 4000 or so and you can luck out down there. My Park Slope friend bought all the rugs in her house at ABC. But this is high-end stuff. And there is no confusing a high-end rug with something at Pottery Barn or some Carpeteria-level rug store. You just can’t make a great rug on the cheap. HD Buttercup does have deep discounts, but no «clearance» section. One rug was 70% and the sale price(it was huge) 1100. That’s not so bad. But Mom is never going to spend 1100 on a rug. This is a woman who drank jug wine on a 54 foot ketch and buys her t-shirts on Groupon. There are some truly exquisite rugs: one 9×12 rug for 17,000. Yes, this sounds horrible and it is. But people buy all kinds of lavish shit in life and this would last forever. It was a very special silk/wool rug. I love this store.

Following my review, I was contacted by Nichole, a manger at HD Buttercup. She sincerely apologized for my experience and asked if Bryan, a fellow manger could contact me privately about rectifying the situation. I agreed and within a day I received an email from Bryan, again apologizing and explaining he had addressed the incident with his staff. He also offered a discount on the rug I was looking at during the terrible encounter. Even though I didn’t accept the discount, since(again) I wasn’t in the market for a rug, I am very appreciative of the gesture and their reaching out.

Great furniture but… I walked by at least 9 employees and only one acknowledged my existance(and I was one of about four customers). Judging by the back brace belt thingie, I think he was the guy who moved the furniture. If I could make sure the commision went to him and not one of the sour-faced salespeople who don’t know how to smile or say hello to customers, I’d buy something.

I had a stellar experience at the Pop Up! The use of space is very easy to navigate — the vignettes are well merchandised. Gail was eager to help and went the extra mile. After she helped my sister and I with the purchase of my fabulous tufted blue velvet sofa, she directed us to Rebecca in carpets. We narrowed it down to two one of a kind rugs from several stacks. They hauled the rugs over to my new couch and I made my selection with the help of their expert eyes. It was as fun and painless as that! The store manager helped them coordinate everything so they would make it in the same delivery. Everyone worked together like a well-oiled machine. After all that spending we satiated our appetites with delicious burgers at Umami. It was the perfect Sunday afternoon.

What a fantastic customer experience! My husband and I have been searching for a dining room table and found we one we loved here. Brian, the store manager came over to help us despite being on his way out, searching around the store for chairs to complete our new set. So glad this ‘pop-up’ will be more of a permanent fixture in SaMo, as the space is so much more inviting than the other location!

Absolutely beautiful! Great selection of rugs, sofas, chandeliers, and bedding. If you like modern concept design, this is the place for you. I could easily decorate my entire house with their items!!!
