We were in Santa Fe last week(8÷1÷2013). On a guided tour of the square(also highly recommended if you haven’t done it…) the aroma of grilled food wafted the air. My nose guided me to Rogues. How good is it ??? Monday — lunch Tuesday — dinner during the free rock concert on the square. Wednesday — lunch Thursday — lunch Friday — missed due to a side trip to Taos. Saturday — lunch with wife, nephew, brother in law. I MISSTHISPLACE. Ih’ll be baaak.

I was not crazy about these tacos. Not only are they messy, but something feels missing in the mix of meat, peppers, onions, and salsa. I felt like I needed some guacamole or crema to enhance the taste, but the taco is basic. The fajita stand at the other end of the park looked much more enticing.

I would drive 2000 miles to savor the unforgettable southwest Mexican street food at the corner of Washington and Palace in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Was in Santa Fe for a conference and the waft grilled meat attracted me to this place like a magnet. Out of curiosity I tried their carnita and spent the next few days coming back over and over again for more. I had the corporate account to go to the fancy artsy restaurants in Santa Fe but I am so glad I did not. Roque’s carnita is a legend. Must try it with their mouth watering salsa with the aromatic thyme and exploding chilies of New Mexico.

This was the first food that I had during my Santa Fe trip. We had a few hours to burn before checking into the hotel and we decided to hang out at the plaza. The Carnitas cart smelled so good that we had to give it a whirl! The meat was flavorful and fresh. My only complaint was that it wasn’t very spicy. It could have used a bit more zip, but overall it did the job. I probably do not want to know where they get their meat, but I would go back in a heartbeat.

The carnitas are great and Roque entertains while you wait. $ 6 for lunch is hard to beat. Basically, it’s a bunch of meat and onions in a tortilla, served from a stand on the corner. He didn’t have hot dogs for our kids, but pointed us towards the five and dime for that.

Roque’s Carnitas are a Santa Fe institution. It’s perfect for a lunch while sitting peacefully on the Plaza. The carnitas are spicily, deliciously meaty. Roque is a character. He also makes a refreshing jamaica(hibiscus juice) It is DEFINITELY local flavor. As Santa Fean as it gets. It’s a place that Guy Fieri would bless with his presence(he was at the Sonoma Plaza, so a plaza is a plaza is a plaza) One can watch the carnitas be made. Looong before food trucks were the in thing, Roque had his place. It’s a taste of the Land of Enchantment!

This was a hit. Perfect for a quick lunch on the go. I was lucky because we got the last ones. Both the pork and veggie tamales are great! Next time I’ll try the carnitas.

Actually, if you are interested in a lunch or light snack this might be one of the best places you can get it. For what it is, it was some of the better food that Santa Fe has to offer at this level or even some of the more highly recommended places. The tamales are great and the carnitas are very good. Order up from this limited street menu and enjoy your meal in the park. It’s a lot better than going to the nasty Maria’s New Mexican food restaurant even if you can’t get a margarita.

Amazing vegetarian tamales, created by a character. Good lemonade, too. My boys had quesadillas, which they liked.

Viva La Street Meat! I cannot say I’ve had one of Roque’s carnitas. For that I can only plead bad timing. I had just finished lunch. However, I have had one of Roque’s tamales and can report that they are the perfect 2 bite snack. It was the perfect tamale and gone too soon from this earth. But for the time it was here, it was loved and loved dearly. Roque is, as reported, a hell of a character and available for Bar Mitzvahs. When I go back and get my carnitas, Roque will surely get his fifth star.
