I called Amigo towing when Triple A would not come get my car because it «was located on an unmaintained dirt road». Full disclosure – I live on a VERY rough road near Cerrillos, NM. But as any fellow New Mexicans know, many roads in rural NM fit that description. Anyhow, Amigo agreed to send a driver and said he would contact me for directions. When he called me, he asked for my address so he could input it into his GPS. I explained to him that we are in a rural area and he is better off following the basic directions I gave him instead of using his GPS as that often results in people being led down non-existent roads. He said OK. I waited over an hour and he finally called me and said he was following his GPS and was lost. Long story short, I texted him directions AGAIN and he finally arrived 2 hours after I called. He was pleasant and got the car hooked up and we were off. I rode with him to my mechanic’s in Santa Fe – a 25 mile trip. It wasn’t until we arrived at my mechanic’s shop that he hit me with a $ 240 bill! He was trying to charge me for a $ 100 hookup fee(even though my mechanic told me Capitol Towing who they use charges $ 35!) and $ 5 dollars a mile! I called Amigo back and told them what I was being charged and they agreed that it was egregious. However, I discovered that this guy didn’t even work for Amigo! They sent out an independent contractor and didn’t tell me! So they didn’t even really have the power to negotiate with this guy – he was charging whatever he wanted and assured me that Triple A would«reimburse me». And Amigo is probably collecting a fee on top of what he charges which is why the price is jacked up so high. Ridiculous. They talked him down to $ 160, but only if I paid cash! Total rip-off artists who are likely not paying taxes. DONOTUSE!
