Six months or so ago, we enrolled our two grandsons(ages 4 and 6) in this school. They had previously been at another school, for over a year. They had learned almost nothing at the other school. Lessons were short(20 minutes). The instructor seemingly had no interest in swimming or the teaching of swimming. He was quite overweight and past his prime. We enrolled our grandsons in the Michael Phelps school because they were not yet water safe, despite all that time in the other school(and all that money from us – we surmise that that is why students there learn so slowly – to keep the money coming in). What a difference! Lessons at the Michael Phelps school were longer(30 minutes), rigorous, demanding and highly structured. My grandsons loved it. You could actually see the improvement from week to week. The instructor is herself an enthusiastic swimmer(since age 4) and is completely invested in the sport and loves teaching it to kids. Last month the 6 year old swam 50 yards nonstop with side breathing. I was pleased but thought nothing of it. At the end of the lesson Ali(the instructor) explained to me that my grandson was now water safe and should consider competitive swimming. She did some research and decided upon Costa Mesa Aquatics for both boys(the 4 year old cannot yet swim the 50 yards, but they want to keep together). Please note: the instructor suggested that my grandsons leave her school so they could enjoy competitive swimming! Said another way, she decided that it was in their better interest to stop paying her to teach them!!! Such honesty just floored me, which is why I have undertaken to write this review. A swim school as honest and excellent as this needs to be promoted.
