I’m not a regular coffee drinker since I don’t need caffeine to function. My dad bought a french press and hand grinder over the holidays for me to make coffee to drink for the flavor and fun. I could not get the coffee to taste good at all, it was always bitter. So, I decided I need to get a reference on what good coffee tastes like. I got a cup of filtered coffee at Hopper & Burr, and it was smooth. There was not bitter at all, just a really smooth cup of coffee. It didn’t have special flavors like fruits or anything, but it was very nice pure coffee taste.

There are some world-class eateries in Santa Ana like The North Left and the Playground, but the coffee scene used to be disappointing(I’m looking at YOU Portola!). Then Hopper & Burr popped up(they share a space with Little Sparrow) and brought balance to the world. The coffee is really good, the space is warm and friendly, and there’s not a hipster to be seen for miles! I’m a fan, and I sure hope they’re here to stay.

I came here on a Monday morning and I was pretty satisfied with the service and menu. I wasn’t overly in love with the Mocha Latte(it was very strong for a small cup and had too rich and almost bitter of a chocolate after taste). But, you can definitely tell they used natural cacao, it just wasn’t my thing. The cinnamon brioche was great! Hopper and burr is a nice place to relax and get some work done before the craziness. The staff was nice and pretty helpful. I just wasn’t overly impressed with the place but id definitely give it another try.

They were out of homemade almond milk so I tried an eggnog latte! It was awesome! Great place and I loved their coffee presentation.

Ordered a latte, which was nice and smooth. They do their coffee well! Doesn’t give that weird, rough, bitter aftertaste that some coffees have. The store is really cozy, quaint, quiet… Good for a coffee break(which I did due to being in the area for jury duty). The interior has kind of an old European(?) vibe that I liked! I would come here again for sure. But, service was a little lacking… The guy at the front did not really explain anything like when to pay, pick up the coffee, etc. Just took the order and started making the coffee without saying another word… And there I was just standing awkwardly for a good minute or so.

Hopper and Burr is a wonderful coffee shop in Downtown Santa Ana located inside Little Sparrow. Pros: Fantastic coffee, with an appropriate price Great service! The owner was very kind and had a great attitude even when working though an influx of customers We tried the cinnamon and jam and bread, it was AMAZING and you also get very large slices for only $ 3 Parking is easy in the structure with lots of street/metered parking nearby Little Sparrows front room has a great ambiance that is relaxing and casual No Cons! I wold recommend this coffee shop to any coffee lovers and will be back soon!

After a long holiday weekend at Disney my fiancé and I needed a place that had good coffee/wasn’t Starbucks(redundant), was quiet and didn’t have a line(read: Disney burn out!). We both love finding places off the beaten path, places locals love and tourists don’t know about. We found H&B and got everything we wanted and then some. The little shop was quiet and there wasn’t a line, that immediately perked us both up. Ordering was easy and the gents who work here are incredibly customer friendly and just all around nice guys – no pretentiousness here, unlike the places we go to back home in the Bay Area. The coffee alone deserves 5 stars. Rich and robust without being bitter or too sweet, my mocha was a total hit. It was so good I ordered another to go, which isn’t something I normally do with espresso drinks. The cinnamon toast was also hit-it-out-of-the-park good. A giant piece of fresh brioche was griddled and covered in cinnamon and sugar, it tasted just like a churro. In the end my fiancé ordered another cup of coffee to go as well and we both left very happy and eager to come back. We easily found parking in front.

Driving through Santa Ana one morning and you see this chalkboard sign that says Hopper & Burr it took me a few to look it up so see what this was all about. Cute pop up inside of little sparrow. I have been a few times now and the baristas on both visits were very nice and fun to watch creating their drinks. The first time I was there I ordered almond latte. It was absolutely perfect no need for sugar as the coffee flavors add the perfect balance. This morning again I ordered a latte and the cinnamon brioche toast. My little 2 year old mowed on it. I had a bite and it reminded me as being a kid. We were the only ones in their and Truman was talking with us about the seasonal drinks. I am not quite sure how he did it but I ended up ordering the peppermint latte. It was such a wonderful treat! It was not overly sweet just the right amount. I highly suggest ordering it if you go during the holidays! We will for sure be back for lattes and cinnamon toast for sure! Great coffee, great service and very cute space!

Great local coffee. They had an amazing filtered coffee and expresso even made it with almond milk. Not super busy when we got there, but was when we left. We only had the coffee, not the food yet. Will be back for sure

One of the best cappuchinos I’ve ever had. The coffee is very good — top notch beans. Smells great and I read they go through quite a lot of research to find exceptional beans. The taste shines through. The foam and milk was unique. They used regular milk but they whipped up the milk almost into the texture of whipped cream. Very fluffy and great compliment to the espresso shots. Would go here all the time if I lived or worked near by.

Came here the other day with a friend We both enjoyed our lattes although would like if they had raw sugar as opposed to honey for sweetening Latte was very nice and fluffy creamy not watery. The barista was very nice. The aesthetic is cute, Parisian chairs and tiled floors. Actually inside a restaurant and operates during its non operating hours so it’s a pop up. Parking sucks it’s only meters so not really great to come and stay long. Would like to come again.

I’m a bit of a coffee snob now that I think of it. But, I mean, who doesn’t appreciate a good, well-crafted cup? Megan N. suggested this pop-up to me last night and so we arrived early this morning around 830AM. Super chill vibe. Very quiet and not pretentious at all. Friendly barista greeted us as we walked in and made our drinks with the quickness. ESPRESSO $ 2 — 5⁄5 Pulled perfectly. It was well balanced. I’d most likely order a double next time. MOCHA $ 5 — 5⁄5 Megan is a huge fan of mocha’s. Its pretty much all she orders. She picked me up looking kind of cranky with droopy eyes, but as soon as she had a sip, those eyes opened wide! Imagine lines for eyes suddenly turning into huge animé eyes. That’s exactly what happened. I’ll definitely be back soon.

When I crave a good cup of coffee, I really respect people who put some extra time and care into their cup. A simple menu, no gimmicks, just good beans and roasts. As a pop-up throughout the morning and early afternoon, Hopper & Burr are doing some great things here. I’m a NorCal native and find that there are tons of neat coffee spots up there, that to find them in Orange County is pretty slim. Hopper & Burr keeps their menu simple, but effective. They take up Little Sparrow’s space during the morning/day, which is gorgeous and simple with enough dining tables throughout, well spaced out between with open windows that let beautiful light into the day. The black/white/brown colors of the space give it an old-timey yet still very modern feel. I ordered a latte for $ 4 and their avocado toast for $ 5. I came in for a late lunch/afternoon bite just before close, and the barista man was kind enough to still offer me something. The latte was pulled well; not too bitter or strong, but generally smooth and effective. The avocado toast came a bit later and was delicious(they note that it’s not vegetarian; bits of bacon and cheese are baked into the bread). The spread was pretty thick and hearty, chunky avocado which is always delicious. The toast was nice and rustic. They also seem to have sprinkled some salt or sea salt on top, which was a bit too much for my liking – wish they went easy on it. Otherwise, for $ 9 it was a decent and lovely meal for the afternoon. The space is gorgeous and they seem to be pulling their espresso well. Hard to find decent coffee places, but they’re doing great things here. Perfect spot for anyone wanting some quiet conversation, a wifi workday, a hipster date or just a nice cup of coffee. Blends well with the budding arts-and-hipster collective taking over DTSA!

I was downtown for jury duty and had an hour and a half to kill. I work down here too so I wanted to try something different. I saw Hopper and Burr on Unilocal and realized it was in Little Sparrow’s space during the day. They have a small, cozy set up that beats the hustle of 4th Street Market and Portola. They also serve avocado toast and PB&J, although they were out of avocado the day I came. My cappuccino was served atop a wooden board with their logo etched in.

Residing in the space of Little Sparrow during the day, one can expect a simple brew with unique roasts in a lovely space. Having been open for a few months, I strolled down to this cool spot into the hipster enclave of Santa Ana. Located right near the Orange Crush where the 5, 57, and 22 freeways meet, I was able to get here fairly quickly and across all the lights on Main Street. Finding parking was cinch, to which I had metered options and a parking garage on 3rd Street. A dollar gave me over an hour at the space, and I felt like I had almost won the parking wars. Coming here in the afternoon, I noted they closed shop at 3:00 p.m. and approached the counter to order. While they did not have the air conditioning running through the room, I decided to sweat it out and enjoy the wonderful décor. The filtered coffee they had on hand was an Ethiopian style from a roaster in Boston, and it was a fairly tangy(not to be confused with bitter) and fruity cup. It was pretty good and not too strong. I found myself appreciating the cup after every sip, noting it as a unique flavor that I didn’t come across in drips at most chain stores. I worked off their free wifi, and noted the many patrons to be returning customers who were known by their first name basis. Others inside the place were trying the avocado bread, lattes and espresso drinks in an experimental fashion. They all seemed to be making a hipster-kind of experience out of it, with relaxing conversation and reposed attitudes. I find this place to be a nice touch to the growing hipster restaurants in the walkable neighborhood. Although they are open at a time that doesn’t entertain the bulk of these restaurants, it’s close enough to places like the courthouse to keep a small crowd around. I hope it does well, because they had a simple menu with a unique taste to which everyone may not welcome. For the coffee connoisseur, the hipster, the stop-n-go drinker, and the café wifi hounding worker, it’s a good fit.

After the incredible disappointment that was Portola Coffee Lab’s third satellite location, I resigned myself to thinking of Santa Ana as a city full of exceptional food venues with no coffee joints worth mentioning. Thankfully, that completely changed when Truman Severson brought his Hopper & Burr«pop-up» coffee bar to the corner of Man and Third. Not only is the coffee vastly superior to Portola’s, but Truman and Andrew(the other barista) have surpassed their Portola training and actually TALK to customers! Truman’s pop-up concept is brilliant in its simplicity. Hopper & Burr is set up each morning at 7am in what is at other times the Little Sparrow’s restaurant venue. They close at 3pm, which gives the restaurant time to get ready for their dinner open. The space sharing appears largely seamless to customers, with the only downside being that Hopper & Burr is closed on Sundays because Little Sparrow serves Sunday brunch. The simple but exceptional coffee choices in this quaint, European-style bistro include mochas, lattes, espresso, cappuccinos and brewed filtered coffee. Prices range from $ 2 to $ 5.
In addition to coffee, H&B offers a small selection of sweet and savory breakfast items. My hands-down favorite is the Avocado Toast. It’s served on a generous slice of fresh, locally baked artisan bread, and perfectly toasted on a griddle with a generous portion of nutty, chunky avocado spread on top. The bread has small pieces of Italian meat baked into it, and the gestalt taste is heavenly!
H&B’s mochas are easily my favorite in OC; it’s a rare Saturday morning when I don’t stop in for a mocha and an order of avocado toast. Each and every mocha comes complete with some exceptional coffee art, which is a nice touch that you don’t see a lot of anymore. While I continue to try and search out other exceptional ultra-Premium Java emporiums, I’m a total fan of Hopper & Burr and visit at every opportunity. Give it a try and you’ll be hooked too :-)

I came here one morning/noon to see what this 5 star coffee shop was about. I think it’s because I came on a weekday, but it was not crowded at all. It’s technically a shop within a shop; it’s located inside little sparrow, where in the daytime it’s hopper & burr. I honestly have nothing but good things to say about this place. The only downfall is that I wished it was open later and parking is ehh. But what can you expect from downtown santa ana parking… Everything about this shop is perfect. The baristas are perfect, the coffee is perfect, and the pastries are perfect as well. Immediately walking in they welcomed me with such warmth and happiness. I put my study materials on a table and ordered an almond milk cappuccino with a cinnamon toast. He made conversation with me, asked me how my day was going, and overall just had such a positive personality. They did not mind at all that i sat there for forever doing my work. Besides the wonderful customer service, the almond milk cappuccino was great as well. It was smooth, flavorful, and everything that a cappuccino should taste like. The cinnamon toast paired perfectly with the coffee. The sweetness from the cinnamon contrasted the slightly bitterness of the cappuccino. The toast was a thick brioche? I’m not sure what type of bread it was, but it was thick, buttery, but cinnamon-y, and had an overall wonderful texture and taste. I know, how can I praise a toast… but I swear! It was really good. **little note: they do have free wifi!** Thank you so much Hopper & Burr, you are now my favorite little coffee joint **insert 100 heart emoji**

New pop-up on the block This gem on the corner of Main and 3rd has been open since February and will only continue onto greater things. They currently rent out the place from The Little Sparrow until 3pm, but that’s clearly all they need to keep the business going. The barista/owner is a great person to talk to. One can genuinely tell how passionate he is about Hopper & Burr. I enjoyed a lovely latte during my stay and was able to spend a couple of hours at the café doing some work as the Santa Ana winds drizzled in at times. There were your typical individuals doing work on their laptops(guilty), you also had your cute couple in the corner, co-workers coming in for an afternoon pick-me-up, and last but not least you had the group of girlfriends catching up on friendly gossip. Hopper & Burr has a great deal of potential to expand and I wish them nothing but the best! I will most definitly be returnign and becoming a usual due to the great atmosohere, custoemr servie, and caffeine of course. Can’t wait to see what more they can bring to Downtown Santa Ana!
