One of the better free festivals you’re going to find outside a big city, with the benefits of being in a very small town. I thought the music was better than ever this year, with young rockers The Coffis Brothers being the big surprise for me on Sunday and my old favorites Mike Beck & the Bohemian Saints, Casey Frazier & his all-star band, and The Suborbitals standing out on Saturday. Food continued to be good, with salmon and tofu(beware of garlic!) & veggie bowls from Chong’s/Yi’s Korean BBQ and potato tornadoes from Maha’s Lebanese Cuisine being on my personal menu, with lots of other choices. Good selection of beer & wine, family activities, and plenty o’ porta-johns. I wonder if attendance was down this year due to the First City(music) Festival being scheduled on the same weekend.

10th Annual West End Celebration is going on right now in Sand City. Sponsored by the Monterey Herald, the Weekly, PG&E, Monterey Mattress and Embassy Suites to name a few this festival welcomes all ages and it’s free. This three day festival features numerous exhibits, vendors and artists including one of my local fave’s Tornado Rider. Just cruise the street to find some decent grub(Babaloo is here!), informative booths, handmade jewelry and see what the local shops in Sand City have to offer. August 26−28th, 2011
