I got a chicken quesadilla and it was seriously the best chicken quesadilla I’ve ever had. What made it so great? It’s simplicity! It had the perfect cheese/chicken ratio, the tortilla was the perfect balance of crispy/tender, and most importantly, all of the components were high quality and delicious! The menu said the quesadilla came with quacamole; but I was pleasantly suprised to find instead a perfect, simple, green sliced avocado sitting atop my quesadilla. That’s way better than quacamole, right? Anyway…delicious, beautiful-looking food, made with care from quality ingredients. What more could I want for lunch?

This place is great for any meal. Warm, friendly, hospitable staff if u want cuban cuisine, don’t look anyplace else. I have lunch at least once a week if not more often. Check it out for yourself & u won’t be disappointed.

I do have to preface that this was my very first visit to this restaurant but my friend and I were throughly impressed. I ordered the Cuban and couldn’t have been happier with my delicious sandwich. I feel like I am quite the connoisseur when it comes to Cubans too. I’ve eaten so many from so many different places that I feel part Cuban citizen. I would rate this one in my top 7 ever. My friend who is Guatemalan ordered the Puertorican Steak Sandwich and he was already making plans to come back before he even finished the sandwich. To top it off, Mikey’s sends out mailer coupons, which we had, so our meal was cheap. On the downside, Mikey’s dining room was dark, boring and lacking character. And service was a bit slow for us on our lunch break. I will be going back soon for sure. Maybe I’ll see you there.

Had a late lunch here — I ate the Ropa Vieja and my partner had the Puerco. Both dishes were good but not in the same league as Sol Food in my opinion. They seem to use generic soda which my partner did not enjoy(I drank water). Lunch for two with a soda was $ 28 before tip… I would probably try it again but my next Puerto Rican dining experience will be back at Sol Food first.

This place was surprisingly great! It was much more spacious and comfortable inside than I had expected it to be. The food was way delicious. I was suspicious of the huge menu – American, Puerto Rican, and Cuban, but the Ropa Vieja was great, as was the Chinese Chicken Salad. Amazing! A big thanks to whoever made the Maduros. They know how to fry them at a low temp so that the sugars caramelize, leaving the inside soft and sweet and the outside kind of crispy. Tasted like home!

My husband and I went in for lunch. They have a huge menu with lots of American items, but I was really interested in the Cuban food; as I’d heard about that type of cuisine on chef shows; and wanted a lunchtime vacation experience. I ordered the Cuban sandwich with a side of red beans and rice. My hubby had the quesadilla. It was all good, but my choice was fabulous. Friendly staff, nice environment, great value. They even gave us a complimentary flan for dessert which was just as yummy. I think they should offer even more Cuban and Puerto Rican options and fewer American… just my thought.

Went for breakfast. I ordered poached eggs. They were doused in vinegar and really not edible. The breakfast of the person I went with was just fair at best. The eggs in her omelette tasted funny with a weird coating. Granted we have only gone once and maybe their forte is lunch/dinner, but we were turned off by the breakfast.

As a die-hard fan of Sol Food, I was suspicious of other reviewer’s comments about Mikey’s Cuban fare. But hands-down, this is the best Cuban cuisine I’ve found in the Bay Area. Hubby and I ordered the lunch size of the Mofongo w/pork and the Cuban sandwich. Both tasted amazing and the portion sizes are HUGE. Leftovers served as dinner for both of us later that night. The total tab, with soft drinks and tip, came to $ 30. Amazing food at a reasonable price. Will definitely be back again soon.

The first time I went here is was surprisingly good. The second time I went here it was disgusting. The side of fries were a mix of hot/fresh and cold/old… gross. The sandwich tasted like they through the bread in a toaster at the last minute rather than grilling it all together. I doubt I’ll go there again. Sorry Mikey… if thats your real name.

This is my first review on Unilocal, and no better way to start off than reviewing Mikey’s. Some of the locals probably know this place as the former Jason’s restaurant, and has since seen several changes(including a hamburger joint and a sushi restaurant). I first tried Mikey’s some time last year. Sam, the owner, is very friendly and approachable. Mikey’s started off offering regular diner fare, but recently they’ve made the great move of introducing a Cuban/Puerto Rican menu. Being a big fan of Cuban cuisine, I’ve eaten here about four times already, and I must say that the food is excellent. I’ve tried pretty much most of the items on the Cuban menu, and my favorites are the staples like the Cuban sandwich, Chicharones de Pollo, Masitas de Puerco, Ropa Vieja and the Bistec. All of them were delicious and very well executed.(I saw the food critic from SFGate there once, and asked him what he thought of the food. He gave the thumbs up too.) Of course, no self-respecting Cuban joint would leave out Picadillo(minced beef hash with olives), the classic Cuban comfort food. On my last visit, I asked Sam if he could get his chef to whip up the dish. Not expecting much, I was surprised then he said yes, and about 10 minutes later, I was eating Picadillo. It was very tasty and well-seasoned, and came with a side of rice, greens and sweet plantains. It was good enough that I told Sam that he needed to make this a regular menu item, so hopefully that happens. I’m also hoping that another classic Cuban dish, Arroz Con Pollo(Chicken & Rice) will show up soon. The chef is formerly from Mambo’s, another well-rated Cuban place that was a favorite of mine that closed a couple of years ago. Needless to say, I’m glad he showed up here! Most locals know about Sol Food, the Puerto Rican juggernaut in San Rafael, but Mikey’s food is as good, and at least here you can get a table without waiting! Overall, I’m giving four stars for now(four and a half if I was allowed to). My rating is mostly based on the Cuban portion of the menu. The food is excellent, the prices are reasonable, the environment is casual and comfortable, and Sam is always interacting with customers to get feedback. To me, that’s a sign that this place will be very successful. I’m holding back from five stars until I’ve eaten more here and can vouch for the consistency of food and service(and till the Cuban menu is more developed), but as of now I’m a big fan. Highly recommended!

I went with my co-workers for lunch because of the reviews here. The food took about 30 min. to arrive, It was not bad but not great either, the appetizer came way after the main meal and the calamari were definitely not fresh. we did not get utensils, until after about 5 minutes of seating there looking at our food and I asked the waitress. She then only brought them to me and not the other people at the table. The restaurant was not full only two other tables where occupied. The prices are too high for the food and service. The WORST within 30 min of leaving my co-worker got really sick. NEVER again.

I love me some food and if you’re looking for something tasty, local and affordable to eat — this is the place. Medium-rare burger is medium rare — never over-cooked. Sandwiches, mexican food — all tasty. I haven’t tried the newly added Cuban menu but I hear good things about it. The owner is approachable. So, if you don’t dig your plate — just tell him nicely what’s not to your satisfaction. It’s a new place and the owner wants to make things better — give him the chance :)

I had their Masitas de Puerco — tender pork chunks marinated in cuban mojo sauce. It was phenominal ! I wanted to have seconds but didn’t have the time & I wanted to keep my current weight constant. Oh yeah, I’m definitely going for seconds !

The Cuban chef here really knows what he’s doing. Just had the Cubano sandwich today and it was probably the best version of it I’ve ever had. it comes with moist chunks of pork(carnitas like) and a thick slice of smoky ham, mustard, mayo, pickles and cheese. The ratio of all the ingredients was perfect, just delicious. We also had the Bistec de palomilla encebollada, which comes with two thin well marinated steaks topped with grilled mojo onions. This was delicious as well, served with excellent fried plantains(get the garlic ones), fresh salad and rice and beans. Make sure to get the moro rice, where the beans are cooked with the rice. Really tasty. I’ve also had the Ropa vieja, shredded flank steak in a creole sauce, which I also enjoyed. If you’re a Cuban food fan, this place is destination worthy.

At first it was a convenient and good hamburger joint, but now with the Cuban chef and food; I must say it is delicious. The fried garlic banana is way better than Sol Foods.

Great Cuban menu. The food is authentic and very very good. I had the ropas viejas, great taste and tostones, very very good. I recommend it. Also it has an excellent diner menu, good soups, hamburgers, sandwiches, fish and chips and so on. The service and atmosphere are very good and the food is excellent.
