fishing isn’t cheap in anyway. some of those guides on the bay charge over $ 100. only met Keith a couple times. he knows his stuff though and is well known for his sturgeon fishing. if anything he probably figured you knew how things worked. guide, license(at last minute), bait, tackle that could of made a fishing trip you never forgot could get pricey. well on the positive side you were being geared out by a legend. basically convenience comes at a price

I feel a little fleeced. I gathered 12 guy-friends to come help me celebrate my impending fatherhood on a halibut trip. Keith was very helpful lining up the boat, but he told me the total cost, per person for the trip would be $ 85, including rods. Even when I asked him directly about additional costs, he neglected to mention the additional $ 30-$ 35 bucks he was going to extract from each of us for a day-license and a ton of tackle. No one needed the extra tackle. We were newbies and didn’t think to question him. I wish he’d been up front about it, it’s not like it would have put us off, but since I passed what he told me to my friends, he made me look bad. It didn’t ruin the day… we caught fish, and the crew of the Predator was great. Next time I’m trying E-ville.

«It’s damn cold out here. What the heck are we doing?» Sturgeon fishing on the San Francisco Bay in January is like that. We got blown around, rained on, even some hail fell on us. And very little action that day. By the end of the day we were tired, shivering, and hungry. Interesting how when you are trying to stay warm you burn through your food(and your scotch). If you ever choose to do go out on the bay for some fishing(sturgeon, bass, flounder, etc.), I highly recommend seeing The Bait Man(Keith Fraser, aka The Sturgeon General of the Bay Area) at the Bait House before going out onto the water. He’ll get you set up with proper bait and tackle. He will tell your where they were hitting the day before. If you need rods, nets, etc, then he has a nice little selection and fair prices. He will even set up a boat for you. Three other reasons to go to Loch Lomond Live Bait House: — Keith is a pretty cool guy and has good advice — There is a «family» of birds that hang out there that Keith feeds that include a couple of species of herons, a few egrets, and a couple of others. You can read more about this on SFgate: — parking is free Keith holds a sturgeon fishing seminar every year. So get on his list so you don’t miss it next time. $ 5 for 2 hours of instruction and entertainment. And if you are lucky, there will be a cooking demonstration and other samples to munch on.
