Jack’s Barber-Style Shop

Very bad haircut experience. I went in with fairly long hair. I wanted to change to a crew-​cut/​flat top with an inch and a half to two inches of hair on top. Sat down and relaxed. The conversation is really good but I was in for a surprise. I wear glasses with a pretty strong prescription so I never see anything when I get my hair cut.
When it was said and done, I have less than half an inch of hair on my head. My hair is not flat. Pretty much my hair follows the curve of my skull.
I stated that the haircut is much shorter than I expected but he stated that he thought I looked good.
I went home, showered and took a second look and it only confirmed that it was waaaaayyyyy to short. I called to complain and he at least gave me my money back, hence a two star review. I believe any guy will be with me when I say, I would much rather have the hair that I wanted.
Now I have to wait to grow it back.

I had to start coming back here (even though I moved 30 minutes away).

I was in San Rafael on a work trip, needed a haircut, so I checked out this place, made a phone call, Gary called me right back with an appointment time that was convenient for me. Gary does great work, he did a super job on my hair, service was superb, sat in the barber chair talked some baseball and got a kick ass haircut for about $ 20 (which is pretty reasonable for San Rafael prices). Highly recommend.

Ignore Arthur C’s review. He went to the wrong barber shop. Gary is still there just as he has been for the past 40+ years.
If you’re a real man looking for a traditional barber cut with no frills and a reasonable price, this is where you go. The place doesn’t have a sign out front and the inside is spartan and basic. If you need a wash/​dry, hair gel and pampering, go to your wife’s salon instead. This place is not for you.

I recently moved to San Rafael and searched Unilocal for a good barber. I tried another local barber who was extremely nice, but the cut was not satisfactory. Gary on the other hand is a true barber. The cut was great and quick. The place is hard to find, but if you want a good haircut I can assure you it is worth finding Gary’s shop.

Been going to Gary for several years now. His haircuts are 1^st rate. He remembers how I like it & his price is reasonable. It took me a while to learn his hours; he is open 4 days a week.

Gary cuts my hair the same every time and that is why I go all the way to SR for a haircut even though I no longer work nearby. After ten years of taking care of me, I hope my recommendation is worth something to those looking for a barber.
Gary, I am giving you the fifth star because the shop looks so nice now.

I’ve been seeing Gary for several years, and he really knows how to deal with my particular head! Also, Gary’s the real authority on the Marin restaurant scene. Great place to go for a friendly cut.

Best $ 20 haircut I’ve had.

You won’t know Jack, cuz there ain’t no Jack. It’s Gary’s house and once he’s done his magic to your mop you’ve got a cutter for life. Paying less for a haircut that is far superior (according to my wife) than all the Salon crap that’s costs $ 40-​$ 60 is the main reason you may want to check him out.
Gary cracks me up. I swear I’m gonna set up a camera during my next cut and post it to YouTube.
How many guys do you know that actually say they’re a good golfer? Just one, Gary.

Jack’s is an old fashion style barber shop. Gary is the man, a real pro. He does a great job cutting your hair and is fast. He knows everyone in San Rafael and you can pick up the latest news on your friends you haven’t seen in awhile. Gary’s like a good bartender with excellent conversation and advice on lots of different subjects.
I have some concerns giving him the 5 stars he deserves for fear it will become a problem getting my hair cut on short notice. He stills gets the 5 stars though. Thanks Gary for all the great haircuts.

Good conversation and a great cut. Gary has been in business for longer than you’ve probably been around, and does great work and obviously cares about his customers.
