An update on Mr. Sutton. He continues to practice divorce mediation. Understand that this is a completely unregulated industry, without any ethical or conduct requirements, unlike the practice of law or a car mechanic. Mr. Sutton requires you to sign waivers of his liability, and other documents that allow him to act in any way he personally feels appropriate, or influenced by politics or his own interests at the time, regardless of ethics, current law, common morality or basic decency. It is in this «Wild West» arena where Mr. Sutton succeeds in continuing his highly suspect business in mediation, however, not without recent serious legal scrutiny of his services. While he may sell you on the idea of his guidance and expertise in protecting you or your client’s rights, the financial health of a family, or the emotional health of children of divorce, his practice is in contradiction. I cannot warn the reader enough to avoid this person, and if you are somehow forced to mediate with him, best to assume you or your client will be dealing with regret and the repair of Mr. Sutton’s work for a long time.

David Sutton assisted us in putting together a marital settlement agreement, and in so doing, was able to make a difficult time in our lives less difficult. He clearly explained all of our options and really helped us with our decision making process. All of our questions were answered and all of our concerns were addressed. He was easy and congenial to work with and best of all, we were able to resolve all of our issues in a reasonable time and at a reasonable cost. We have since recommended his services to others in similar situations and will continue to do so.

David proceeded with our case in a very practical and unbiased manner. When there were more contentious points brought up he was good at pointing out what the court would respond to, what the law required and what might be actually fair to both parties. He also gave practical advice on how to proceed on certain points after the mediation. David also shared perspectives from other cases he worked on (never giving away confidentiality but using examples of what worked/didn’t work.) He never gave his personal opinions on behaviors, actions or the character of either party. We were both treated with respect. I found him very helpful and he made what is a painful process, bearable.

I retained David’s service to help mediate an acrimonious divorce. We were quite angry with each other, had two small children, over a dozen properties. David did an excellent job of diffusing the tension, taking the time to meet with us each individually, listening patiently to our grievances and helping us remain focused on finding common ground. He explained the law, made suggestions on schedules and proposed compromises and within a few weeks at a reasonable cost, we reached an agreement. David did an excellent job and is someone I highly recommend.
