I have taken lessons from Joy Han for over ten years, and although it has been many years since I left for college, I still remember and bask in thankfulness for Ms. Han. Whenever I enjoy and appreciate classical music – especially the piano pieces, I am always reminded of Ms. Han’s incredible skills and her passionate heart for teaching us students. She runs with a relentless pursuit of excellence for all of her students. I learned to do my very best in learning theory, practicing at home, and in confidently performing at recitals, competitions and auditions.
As for professionalism, Joy Han is the most professional one can be. She is always punctual and very organized. We always have a consistent lesson plan, with a scheduled homework plan. The smaller private setting also provides her the opportunity to build a teacher-​student relationship – so she will remember how much progress you made by practicing at home.
Ms. Han has also taught two of my younger brothers as well. They too reflect on our past days of piano lessons with Ms. Han and wouldn’t have traded the experience with another teacher.
We miss you Ms. Han! Thank you for imparting your passion and joy for music onto me, John, and Sam!

Both our 8 year-​old daughter and 10 year-​old son have been taking lessons with Teacher Joy for about a year, after having started off with another teacher. With their first teacher, both kids were doing well for a year or two, and then plateaued. I cannot stress enough the progress they have made in the past year.
Joy Han truly loves music and teaching and that shines through in her lessons and interactions with students. She will introduce a new piece of music and say, for example, «This piece is by Haydn. Do you know who he was?» And then proceed to impart knowledge in a way that captivates their imaginations. When she demonstrates pieces, she truly enjoys the music and that enthusiasm is infectious.
Joy also pays attention to proper technique, posture, hand position, and spends quite a bit of time on theory. Her style is firm but kind and my kids respond extremely well and have a tremendous amount of respect for her. She expects a lot from students, but is very fair. However, her style is not for every child who expects adulation and a reward just for showing up.
She truly cares for the students as well, and has tremendous compassion and a kind demeanor. She is truly a gem.

Finding the right piano teacher can be stressful for parents and students. The teacher needs to be knowledgeable, approachable, firm but kind, and a great fit for the student.
Our daughter had had several other teachers who were fine but not fantastic. Last year, we were fortunate to come across Joy Han. An acquaintance of ours spoke highly of her, so we contacted Joy to schedule a tryout.
From the very beginning, Joy demonstrated care, knowledge, and passion for music that was a great fit for us. She has students with many different ability levels, and our daughter has thrived under her tutelage. Joy makes lessons fun and productive while making sure the kids push themselves to get better. Striking that delicate balance between firm and kind is an art, and Joy is an artist in that regard.

Our 9 yr-​old daughter has been a student of Teacher Joy for about one year. In that relatively short period of time, she has improved remarkably, winning recognition in several piano competitions including placing 3^rd at two different events at the 2014 US Open Music Competition. Our daughter also achieved excellent scores in Certificate of Merit (CM) exams.
Teacher Joy is very detailed in her teaching. Issues and problems that might be overlooked by other teachers are usually identified and addressed by Teacher Joy. She genuinely cares about her students’ progress, and will go to great lengths to help students overcome challenges and difficulties. She is also diligent in teaching music theory and she encourages her students to take annual Certificate of Merit exams.
Before Teacher Joy, our daughter had two other teachers who were not as diligent in teaching proper piano technique. Those other previous teachers were less strict and while their lessons were «fun,» we felt our daughter was not progressing as much as she could have. In contrast, Teacher Joy is very serious about providing proper piano instruction for her students. She immediately focused on correcting the bad habits that our daughter had acquired in her previous two years of piano study. After barely a year, our daughter’s achievements have far exceeded our initial expectations. We believe the effectiveness of Teacher Joy’s instruction was instrumental in our daughter’s success.
Teacher Joy is now preparing our daughter for more advanced piano competitions and events. We’re really looking forward to see what she will be able achieve over the next year.
I would strongly recommend Teacher Joy for any parents who want their children to improve their piano skills, and who want piano instruction to be more than just a «fun» activity.

Teacher Joy is the best piano instructor compared to all the instructors I have ever known during my three decades of piano study!
Three years ago, I was looking for a piano instructor not for myself, but for my 5 year old daughter at the time. Being that I have a degree in music and have had many piano instructors over the years, I was very particular when looking for a very highly experienced teacher who exceeds my expectation in piano and music instruction. I narrowed my search to only instructors who are members of the Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC) who prepare their students to take the statewide Certificate of Merit (CM) for Piano exams, because I went through the same certification while growing up in California and understood how important it is to have this foundation in order to be well rounded in music rather than what some piano teachers do — which is to produce robotic performers who do not appreciate nor understand the music. My daughter had trial lessons with many MTAC instructors where many of them belonged to the latter group, but Teacher Joy really stood out amongst them all. Not only was she knowledgeable and patient, and had the perfect balance of firmness and freedom of expression, but she truly has a love for music. She would point out interesting facts about the composers that made learning music fun. Teacher Joy paid attention to the technique so that she can fix any wrong technique. She taught not only piano performance, but also ear training, sight reading, theory, history. She is not ‘strict’ per say, but the better word is ‘firm. For example, if the student is not practicing enough nor progressing, she will call it out, however, if the student is focused and doing well, she will acknowledge and praise for positive reinforcement. She is one of the elite teachers in that most of her students who participate in the annual CM exams achieve Honors in CM. She also judges at many bay area competitions. I wished that when I was young, I could have a teacher like Teacher Joy.
Now, both my daughter and my son are studying under Joy, and I cannot be happier with the results so far. My daughter received CM Honors 3 out of 3 years in a row, and my son just took his first CM exam and also received CM Honors. We look forward to many more years of piano study under Teacher Joy!

The first thing I noticed when I stepped into Joy’s piano studio, I saw two Steinway grand pianos. Wow! These are the best in the industry. Musician performs on Steinway.
My son, 10 years old, has been studying piano with Joy since we moved to peninsula area. He loves Joy to teach him. He started with her after learning piano in the school for three and half years. That was time we decided to take seriously on piano. She covers both theory and technique very well. She was able to correct him on fingering and systematically teach him the theory. My son was so proud in his school’s music class, as he knows all the answers. She also works with him to prepare for his piano test.
She is very professional, experienced, and patient. She is very kind and elegant, encourages kid to learn and enjoy the music, at the same time, makes sure there is enough discipline. As a parent, I do feel every lesson is well worth of it.
Every March, there is a recital, which is very impressive.
