I love the day a month or so when I have the time and inclination to donut up on the morning of a day off. I usually hit Shipley’s b/c of location and habit, but Dixie Cream has always been good. I say that being old enough to remember SM before the train station, when the only stop was a bare concrete platform just steps away from this storefront. Today’s two pigs in a blanket(or sausage kolache depending on where you grew up) plus a glazed twist with a regular milk was $ 6.19 before tip, which seems comparable to my milk/Boston Crème/single sausage-and-cheese kolache order at Shipley’s. Dough is light and fluffy and delicious, and the sausage is generously encased in a cakier dough while Shipley’s seems more yeasty. I love them both, and I *really* liked the touch of glaze on the kolache here. Service is polite. There are fewer menu options than Shipley’s with less polished frosting in shocking colors, but DC’s taste less commercial and more homemade. Can’t comment on the coffee but Mr. R has never complained. Finally, it might be a funny little parking lot but I spend less time in line here than at competitors’ counters.

Small building but big hearts and big flavor! The staff were very friendly and attentive. We ate inside although that space is very small. It sort of feels like you are eating in the kitchen. The apple fritters are equal or better than any we have had anywhere and we have had MANY! Their savory croissants with ham and cheese were melt in your mouth delights. And their famous Manske Rolls are killer! If you eat in you should ask them to heat one up for you. This cinnamon roll is fluffy, gooey, sweet perfection. It’s good we live nowhere close to this place, otherwise we would be blimps from eating here so often. Go now!

I was here to get a dozen doughnuts — pretty straight up task. The Menu stated Glazed, Twists and Cinnamon Twists were $ 1.00 each. If I bought a dozen, then $ 9.00. But if I mixed and matched the types of doughnuts that were $ 1.00, then the Dozen costs $ 13.50. Hmm… let’s see, I get penalized for purchasing $ 1.00 doughnuts, which are ALREADY produced and sitting there, because I want variety? So I end up paying MORE than $ 1.00 apiece? How does that work? Should I order them one at a time to get them for $ 12.00? The clerk was not seeing the lack of logic here, she said tough… the doughnuts are $ 13.50. Yes, I could have refused and walked out, and now I regret I didn’t…they weren’t $ 1.00 doughnuts! Sorry, local people, but if you do the customers wrong, they will leave, and support the«other guys»: Krispy Kreme. I do not recommend Dixie Cream in San Marcos, TX

If you want to impress co-workers, you couldn’t do better than bring in a dozen of their square donuts. And they have the best Homer(strawberry w/sprinkles) donuts in town. And they sell Manske rolls, too! Yum!

The donuts are great! Try the jelly filled donuts! Everything on the menu is amazing you can’t go wrong. Ended up buying 5 different things and still wanted to go back for more because it was so delicious but I couldn’t. Lol highly recommended!

I have been going to Dixie for over 15 years and have always thought the donuts were melt in you mouth amazing. Not so much anymore. Now, they are huge, heavy, and dense and of course more expensive. Took some to my office and everyone was really let down that the new owners changed the recipe, size and shape. Guess we have to find somewhere else to go now. Really a let down and a sad day. I gave 2 stars because though the staff is nice, they are very unorganized and slow. Very different from the original staff.

Not only are their donuts the best in town, but easily the biggest. And cheap too. Haven’t been in a while, and was greeted by Ruben, who I’m guessing to be the owner. He explained that they use only potato flower folded by hand, not a mixer in the building, to best preserve the glutens. I love a bit of science with a good sweet. Also said they were under new management, and would be expanding their hours and menu after a grand reopening in November. Sold.

Really good, fresh, doughy, sweet donuts. And prices cannot be beat especially for how good the donuts are!

Rarely do I ever give 5 stars. Went here on a limb.(I’m a Shipleys loyal customer since I was 5) and I was greeted immediately, I got asked if I ever dined with them previously. For high school kids, they loaded me up with history. I even got a free glaze donut to try and compare to my Shipleys donuts. Try them. You won’t disappoint. Best donuts ever.

Easily the best donut holes I’ve ever had. I think they must put a tiny bit of vanilla in their glaze or something. Freaking fantastic. Also– if you’re a fan of jelly filled donuts(I prefer raspberry filled), this is the place to get them. Their jelly filled donuts are all rectangular instead of round, so there’s jelly in every bite. GENIUS!

My boss brought a box in to the office today. Opened the box, nothing fancy just chocolate and glazed. Took a bite and instantly I knew this was a donut that stood out amongst all other donuts. It was light yet creamy. Perfect texture. Well balanced. Other donuts just can’t compete. Perhaps until today I’ve only had mediocre donuts throughout my life. All I know is that this place is special.

Stopped in here on my quest to find the best donut in San Marcos, and thought is was ok. I believe an older couple own and run the place, so it is a nice local business to support. However, the cake donut was not my favorite, but it did have a nice light, fluffiness to appreciate. The flavor just wasn’t quite there. I will try again.
