San Jose’s own chamber orchestra for 17 years running, MCO performs 4 times a year in the Le Petit Trianon theatre just north of City Hall. MCO presents classical music in an affordable, intimate, and accessible setting, and tonight’s concert featuring soloist Lindsay Deutsch in the Mendelssohn violin concerto fit all those adjectives. For only $ 25, you can sit up front like I did(seating is general admission and the hall seats only 342 people anyway) and be treated to a high-caliber performance that merited a standing ovation. The soloist mingled with concertgoers over coffee and cookies during intermission, and the orchestra held an informative, engaging Q&A session after the concert too. Furthermore, in addition to the informative program notes, concertgoers were encouraged to have cell phones on if they were sitting in the rear(on silent mode, of course) so they could surf the Web for more context on the pieces being played. Not only did soloist Deutsch rock the house, but the orchestra also provided a robust rendition of Beethoven’s first symphony. In particular, the string musicians in the inner circle really held their own. At such affordable prices, the orchestra is well worth supporting through your attendance, and your patronage too, as the ensemble consists of community members. With the MCO, those of us in San Jose and Silicon Valley can enjoy quality classical music in our own backyard without having to trek all the way up to SF.
