Black Bean is right next door to where Steve works and I had just stopped by to drop off lunch for Steve and I bumped into Ruben. So, I decided I should put on Unilocal what I think of Black Bean. I have been there a few times to the opening events and admired the display of the ceramic pieces done by different artists. I even bought a piece of art work from there(will take pic and upload it here). The place is awesome. Friendly artists and beautiful ceramic art works. The establishment is well kept and inviting. I really would love to take a class someday at this place to find out what it takes to make a vase so I can appreciate the work even more.

I joined the art center /studio immediately after touring the space in October. It’s been over 30 years since I worked with clay and Black Bean has been the perfect place to get started again. Ruben and Will(the owners) are lifelong artists in their own right; are great teachers & nearly always available to mentor you; and are really nice people to be around. In fact, in the past 3 months, I have enjoyed meeting & being around everyone I’ve met at the clay art center. There are members from all walks of life and backgrounds. The diversity and sense of community makes it a great place to hang-out and be creative. I like working or «throwing“on the potter’s wheel. There are members doing hand-building, sculpting, molding and even inventing new ways to work with clay. You can do what you like or try something for the very first time. Through my tecnical membership I get one-on-one training in techniques that have improved my clay-making skills 5 fold already. Each hands-on«technical session» gives me so much more than a traditional class would have(and it costs much less too). I get to do it all at this studio. I throw the pottery, I glaze it, and I fire it. Learning to load and fire the kilns myself has been a real highlight! The space is the best I’ve seen. It’s not cramped like other studios. It’s a large warehouse with a gallery out front, a huge working clay studio and large kiln room. We can even pit-fire out in the backyard. Each member has their own shelving for storing your artwork and supplies — it’s your own space, and other members are very respectful of it. I also love that I can go to the art center to work anytime, day or night. I have found that Will and Ruben, and the other members, are eager to support and nurture my desire to learn, develop and grow as an artist. There are always some great tunes playing that give the art center a nice laidback feeling. The fees are very reasonable and I get so much back from the whole experience. Check it out if you want to be a part of a nurturing, positive, welcoming &FUN! community. I finally did — this is the place — and I’m really glad for it.
