OBC turned into Turollo Sushi Bar. A flier had been circulating(by circulating, I mean Mexicans have been leaving them on our windshields), and I was interested to try the new place which boasted«bigger, better, cheaper sushi.» This place has recently opened up and a bunch of other business have inhabited the space before it. Something about that restaurant space gets a big fat fail sign. For the large space it occupies, there are hardly any souls. I walked in today and looked confused. To be honest, I was. There’s no real host stand, just a place where you«order and pay.» I ordered in English from their extremely sparse menu, but the girl at the counter didn’t speak English. I switched to Spanish, but realized the menu didn’t specify what kind of fish was served with the sushi – so I asked. She replied, «salmon.» “Todos salmon?” «Todos.» Disappointed, but not discouraged, I continued to order three rolls: A monkey roll, tsunami roll, and a Philadelphia roll. Each had it’s own special charm, but all featured rice and avocado. The total bill was $ 18.00. I proceeded to wait at the bar where no one came to ask me if I wanted any water. The owner came up and asked if anyone had helped me. I said«yes,» and then he said, «okay» and walked away. 20 minutes later, a girl came up to me and asked if I ordered three rolls. I told her I was. I took the rolls and took them back to my office. Well, It was terrible. So bad. Disgusting. Horrid. I’ll explain to you the lack of food in meal: For starters, my Philadelphia roll was rice, cream cheese, and cucumbers. That’s it. 5.50 and that’s all I got. Where’s the fish? There was no fish. The Tsunami roll was a little better. It had salmon. Small pieces of salmon and lots of shredded slivers of imitation crab on top lined with avocado slices. It sounds good, but it tasted horrible. The monkey roll had cooked banana slices on top of what appeared to be their version of a Philadelphia roll. Terrible, I say. You should agree with me. I did notice while I was there that Mexicans were able to order a hamburger. This leads me to believe that the Otay Brewing Company still operates the place, but changed the name to Turollo to make themselves hip and awesome. I will go there to offer my consultation services, and maybe even buy them a sushi cookbook. We may give them another go later, but I don’t know when that’ll be. Most likely when they’re already out of business and something else has sprung up in its place. Turollo Sushi is muy muy terrible.
