I love Tajima and i love that they keep expanding. People can’t get enough of their authentic and cheap ramen. Idk how people can wait for service at their Convoy locations(too long during prime time), when they have locations in Hillcrest and East Village. This location stays true to the restaurant quality. Friendly staff, clean, and the food on point.

So the restaurant is downtown right next to a homeless camp. But that does not impact food taste so i got over it quick. One of the people in my party explicitly requested that no seaweed and not fried meat be in her ramen, due to a life severe allergy. Yet when the ramen was delivered, friedeat and seaweed filled the bowl of ramen. Okay, so the waiter of chef made a mistake. Fine, so we asked the waiter to fix it. He offered to take it back and fish it out and bring it back. But, see, food that sits in broth for a minute exudes its… I don’t know I am not a chef… allergen causing chemicals or whatever. So pulling out the meat and seaweed does not actually prevent allergic reactions. So we requested a second time the restaurant take care of the situation and bring what was requested. They agreed to this and finally brought back the order correctly – with a hair in it. No.

I stumbled across this gem on my way to work and within a week I had gone 3 times. Started off ordering the Tajima ramen, delicious. Now whenever I go, I order the Tajima Spicy w/kakuni. It’s probably one of the most delicious things in earth. It’s in my dreams, I just had a bowl and I’m very happy. If you want to be happy, go to a spicy bowl of ramen from Tajima.

I’ve been on the hunt for a really good ramen restaurant here in San diego and have yet to find a place that really stuck out to me. Until Tajima! Came to Tajima one day for lunch during the work day and ordered the Spicy Sesame Ramen. We also ordered a side of kimchi fried rice for the table. The Spicy Sesame Ramen has a Tonkotsu soup base that’s mixed with a sesame paste and comes with chives, bean sprouts, chicken chashu, spicy ground pork, ½ ramen egg, and fried garlic. It’s one of the first times in San Diego that I’ve eaten the ramen straight without adding any type of extra oils or spiciness to add flavor. You have your choice of thin, fat, and gluten free($ 1 extra) noodles. Tonkotsu broth is known for being incredibly rich and flavorful; that’s because it’s cooked for HOURS in pork bones and fat. Tajima didn’t disappoint. I’ve been to the Tajima location on Mercury or Convoy(can’t remember which location) and didn’t feel the same about my ramen. I was taken my surprise by the ramen here in East Village. I kept repeating how delicious and flavorful the ramen and broth were. I’m not a huge lover of kimchi, but the kimchi fried rice was delicious. The kimchi wasn’t too strong, but it provided just enough flavored to differentiate this fried rice from your typical fried rice. We came during the normal lunch hour, 12:00 — 12:30 and it wasn’t packed. If you have limited time during lunch, you’ll be able to stop here, eat, and be on your way within the hour. I’m definitely interested to come back. I’ll be checking out some other ramen broths and maybe a rice bowl.

The ramen here is good and you can actually make it spicy enough to break a little bit of a sweat. Just wish I had seen that the fried garlic was in a pile as I accidentally ate it all in 1 bite. Oops… While not as good as the ramen places in Tokyo that are hidden in the back alleys this place is really good and I would definitely go back.

Tajima Ramen is a gem. It’s right smack between Balboa Park and Petco Park, so it’s pretty far away from all the usual crowds. Though it is easier to find street parking in this area. Tajima is very welcoming. Our hostess quickly seated us and they were ready to take our orders right away. I had the ginger beer. I liked it a lot. I’ve been to places where there’s too much ginger I can’t drink the pop, but this one had a good balance. For ramen, we had the Tonkotsu and Tajima ramen. Both were perfectly prepared. The egg was gorgeous and you get to choose between thick or thin noodles. I really liked the thick noodles. There is some outside seating and inside is pretty small, but Tajima knows how to make ramen and for about 10 bucks it should be on your radar.

I have to agree with Lil Kim that out of all the Tajimas that this is the weakest one. Yes, the food tasted similar to the other locations, but the menu was limited and the parking could potentially be a nightmare down here. There is less seating at this location and service was great from only one person and lacked from everyone else especially towards the end of our meal when the Groupon was mentioned. I’ll probably never come back here tbh, but I will go back to Sweet Bricks next door when I’m in the area.

I love ramen! Just had to say that but after a lovely shared meal at Stella, we wanted to have ramen for dessert. Well not really because ramen isn’t sweet but we had an after meal at Tajima. I ended up sharing my bowl of Spicy sesame ramen with Andy P. Our group requested additional bowls to share with and our server happily obliged. The ramen here is about $ 8 — $ 12 depending on what you order and if you require additional toppings. You can choose from thin or thick noodles and what type of broth. If you want more egg, less egg, or garlic just ask. We went during off peak hours, later in the evening and I can see how this small restaurant can get filled with people. There are booths and longer communal tables but it’s small. There’s a bar area as well. Great ramen and it totally hit the spot.

I’ve received better service on a Nokia 5110 and that bad boy had Snake on it. At Tajima all I got was the distinct honor of being ignored by my server then having to get up and request drinks, get up and request service then get up and request the check. «Raise your hand if youre totally blowing it in the service department.» *silence* «Ahem, Tajima! Tajima? Ta-jeeeeeeeema.» *snores* «Seriously? Is Tajima asleep back there?» *snores louder, people turn and look* (sigh) «This explains so much…»

Oh Tajima — Tajima ramen bar has won my heart! I’ve heard raving reviews about their ramen bar and I’m so glad I finally got to stop by. We were en route to the one in Hillcrest, but this location was closer. Eats. + Tonkotsu ramen. YESSSSS! The broth was delicious and the pieces of pork belly and chasu always make it a hit! The egg was ‘so-so’ — and often times the part I look forward to most — but the delicious broth made up for it. Super fatty & sooooo good, but I had some serious food coma post meal! — Karaage. Good, but slightly overcooked. — German potatoes. Includes small pieces of pork belly, but we seriously could’ve gone without this dish. + Kakuni bun. Eel sauce on top of a thick pieces of pork belly all in a bun?! Who wouldn’t want it? + Hot green tea. For those who loveeee fresh green tea, you won’t be disappointed! No tea bags here! There’s metered parking in the area — some maxed at 1 hour. so if you fall within this window you might want to try coming at an off time/hour.

This is the second time I came to this place giving it a second chance. And Boy am I so glad that I did. First time around I got the vegan ramen because I’m not so into pork. There was no flavor at all and I did everything I could with the condiments that were on the table to help it out with no luck. This place is literally next-door to where I live. So I pass by it all the time! At this cute chalkboard sign in the front showing this late-night happy hour and another side that showed a spicy sesame ramen. Passing by it a dozen times walking my dogs definitely made me want to try it. I got it with chicken and I added vegetables and boy was it packed with flavor. I ordered it to go and I got two tubs one with all the good stuff and then one with just the hot delicious flavorful soup that needed no condiments. The whole thing cost me 1050 and as I waited I also ordered a lychee sake which usually come sweet and this one wasn’t so bad. All in all I’m just so glad that I went back to try this because I know everybody loves this place especially all the other locations and I’m glad that I got this super particular because to me it’s the flavor load! And super filling :)

Came here friday night with my girls before going out. We got seated right away as the spot is bigger than the one in Hillcrest. The ramen is consistently good, like the other locations. I would personally recommend the tajima ramen and the spicy sesame ramen with porky pork. The kakuni bun is on point and the Karaage is actually VERY nice; it is quite up there with karaage from Raki Raki in convoy. I like the fat ramen personally. The service is just okay. A little slow even on a non-busy night. The friendliness level is mediocre, not impressive. Parking is street parking only. No patio available so do not bring your fido here for a meal Overall, I would come back for the food and the happy hour.

It’s nice having Tajima downtown — I can walk and not worry about parking :) My first visit was on a Sunday evening, no wait! Plus we were still in time for happy hour and got to try the Kakuni pork belly buns at 2 for $ 6(1 for $ 4.50 usually). It was the perfect«light» start pre-ramen I got the Tonkatsu Ramen and slurped every last drop of the yummy broth. I thought the pork chashu was perfectly done Service was attentive and friendly — I look forward to returning

The BF and I came here with a groupon and loved it! We’ve tried the Tajima in Hillcrest, but the BF said he preferred the taste of this one. We both ordered ramen. I ordered the regular tonkotsu ramen with tofu. I loved it. I got it with thin noodles and it was perfectly for a cold night. The BF tried the spicy! He said it was indeed spicy, but also delicious! We shared a spicy ahi bowl as well. The rice in it was okay, but I liked the way that they prepared the spicy ahi. Overall, this ramen is authentic and delicious. The broth is thick and flavorful. So Good!

Drinks: Their printed menu didn’t reflect all the beers they actually had. Back board showed a much broader selection than the usual Japanese beers like Asahi or Kirin. Wish i looked up there before going with a standard Sapporo. Still cold and refreshing though. Spicy Sesame Ramen: Really helpful staff. Running around San Diego left my pretty warm so they offered to lessen the spicy heat but the sesame flavor remained. You get all the nice flavors of tantanmen AND a little chashu. Good but not a huge fan of the free floating garlic chips. Noodles were nice and chewy. The egg was cold :( Spicy Tuna Rice Bowl: I wanted even more spicy mayo sauce but it satisfied my simultaneous sushi fish craving. It’s a big bowl — a lot of rice and a good amount of chopped up tuna.

I debated between a three and four, but there is something off about the ambience here. This place is just not warm and inviting. The seating is very uncomfortable, and you’re practically in your neighbors laps while eating. It’s too cramped. I get that it’s a small location, but they are way too ambitious with the amount of seating they’ve tried to force into the space. And if I wanted to eat on hard, uncomfortable benches, I would have joined my son for lunch at his school for a fraction of the price! We were seated right away, which was nice. Our server was very sweet. I wish she had stayed the entire time though. She disappeared about two thirds into our lunch. She was replaced with the not so helpful hostess. She eventually dropped off the check. Then after I pulled out cash, she looked right at me and ignored my check on the table and proceeded to give the table right next to me their check, then come back to pick theirs up all the while ignoring our table. She continued to let the check sit there for another 7 minutes until Justine just picked it up and took it to her at the hostess stand that she was holding up while staring out the door. She told Justine that she never saw it. Strange since she glanced at it a couple times. I let Justine order for me and she did a great job! I enjoyed my ramen. It really hit the spot after having to fast for 12 hours. I was so hungry. I had the curry ramen with pork chashu and pork belly added on. I don’t know if I’d return to this location though. I wasn’t impressed with the service or the layout of the restaurant. I know other Unilocalers noted parking, there was plenty of parking during lunchtime on the weekday that we went. We ended up a door down at a metered spot.

Went to Tajima on a Saturday night around 9 for dinner. Sat at the bar and ordered the garlic edamame and asked them to make it spicy. It was fresh and spicy and yummy to suck on. My fiancé ordered the spicy sesame ramen with extra veggies and I got the vegan ramen with the red bomb on the side. Both bowls were huge and delicious. The vegan bowl had a nice variety of veggies that included asparagus. Our only complaint was that we ate it all and were super full afterward. And later we had stinky burps– I blame the asparagus. Totally worth it.

I was craving ramen when visiting San Diego and decided to check this place out. Being a Japanese curry lover, I naturally chose the curry ramen on the menu. I enjoyed the curry broth and I feel that the thick ramen noodles goes well with the curry. Having more bamboo shoots will probably make the ramen tastier. However, the ramen egg was a great disappointment. The yolk was harden and the egg was a little too salty for my liking. The pork was in general satisfying. Service was also not as bad as what I read here. The servers were friendly and were willing to explain/clarify queries about their menu.

So glad I read the review that suggested I try it for myself as everyone has different tastes. Staff was attentive and super friendly… Easy to customize with extras… Spice, shiitakes, etc. Within ten minutes we had warm delicious ramen. Small quaint great ambiance. Lighting was nice and small bar is cool. If it’s packed… Take it to go. Can’t wait to visit again.

This will be my go to ramen spot! The place is super cozy and the ramen is delicious. Our service was very good. I loved my noodles. The tonkotsu broth was amazing, I added fried garlic. The egg was perfectly seasoned and cooked, next time I might ask for an extra one! My sister had the vegan ramen, she added kim chee and a red bomb which I guess was red curry paste. We shared garlic edamame. I can’t wait to come back.

Great ramen, poor selection, shitty service. There are a lot of choices for ramen now– snd this is now in the bottom rung. Horribly inept service aside, the ramen IS delicious. Zero complaints– but… In comparison to other places: — lack of options — over noodled, under condiments — just as pricey

I really hate to do this to a restaurant but the girls working at this location are really terrible waitreses. And have no idea what custmer service is. Gave us old stale tuna with our rice bowl, tasted like crap, so when we asked to return it, such an attitude from the waitress. And still charged us for it. This and other items were brought wrong to the table, even the Coke tasted horrible. Food bad, service even worse. There are many great ramen places in SD, no need to waste your money on this one!

Very tasty ramen. We have been on a ramen kick lately, and this is a good place to satisfy the ramen crave. Tried the spicy tonkotsu ramen w/pork chasu, and it was really good, with a rich, spicy broth. Might try the curry broth next for something different. I think my favorite ramen is still the other spot nearby, but can’t go wrong with Tajima.

A rainy day in San Diego lead us to ramen. I was excited to find a Tajima location recently opened in the East Village. I had previously tried their Kearny Mesa location once before. This location is tucked away in a nice corner and we were able to find a parking spot easily. We were seated in a corner booth, great for people watching. We ordered the karaage to start. It was crispy and tender inside. For my daughter we ordered the chicken and rice bowl. She usually likes this combo but this time she was all into the karaage. I can’t blame her. My husband and I both went with the Tajima Ramen(no seaweed for me). The ramen noodles itself were thin and the broth salty. Tajima adds baked garlic chips. It can be overwhelming if you take a spoonful. I asked for garlic paste instead but never received it. Service here is a bit off. We were given 1 order incorrectly, my request for garlic paste was never followed up on and our server forgot about us until he came with the check. We didn’t request it. I understand that they recently opened this location but I would wait a bit longer to try them again.

I love curry prepared in many different way, and having it made with Ramen is truly something special, as I learned during my visit at Tajima Ramen. I ordered the Curry Ramen with braised pork but minus the boiled egg, just not a fan. The ramen also came with chopped scallions and of course, the wonder thick ramen noodles for $ 9. Also, just for kicks, I also ordered the Chicken Chashu Bowl for $ 5. The Chashu arrived first and it was piping hot right out of the stir fry. The rice was perfectly cooked to tender morsel, the chicken was finely shredded, and the egg well scrambled in through out the rice. The chicken was quite good, and I like the way they left some of it tender to the touch and some with crispy ends for texture. The egg intermixed was very well seasoned. The dish came with a little bit of nori a top the rice and a very small amount of scallions. It was definitely a great runner up to the ramen to come. The curry ramen was absolute bliss. Evey ingredients has it own part to play with its unique flavor profile and texture. First of all, was very impressed with the curry base broth because it had a very nice viscosity, not to mention its terrific flavor. Picking up a little bit of the starch form the noddles, the broth not only had the great flavor of the curry with its herbs and spice, but it also had a mild milky like consistency. Seriously, I would just put down another bowl with just the curry broth in hand. The ramen noodles were expertly prepared. They were tender, but also offered a small amount of resistance, hence some great texture. They also tasted great and soaked up a good amount of the delicious curry broth. The braised work was quite good as well. It provided a good amount of meat to fat ratio, was tender, and tasted quite savory with hints of soy and maybe brown sugar. I liked that the ends had a bit of crispiness and charred. I ate at the bar and service was top notch. It was a Sunday and Nathan and Marissa were in high spirits. They both provided great service and Marissa had a great personality. All in all, it was a great meal meal with equal great service.

This is probably my favorite Ramen place to go to in SD. Tajima keeps a classic slate of offerings, and combines that with a healthy slate of appetizers, and a good tap list as well. The original Tonkotsu Ramen is a good portion size, and comes with well cooked noodles, and nicely done pork chashu. If you like steamed buns, be sure to try the Kakuni Bun appetizer. I have never had any issues with any of the Ramen dishes, but have seen some slow service due to popularity of Tajima. If nothing else, you can surely handle the issue of a place being beloved for its good food.

This place tastes about the same as the other Tajima locations which is good since it shows they’re consistent with flavor. I felt that there may have been a tad bit too much noodles for my taste but then again sometimes people complain about not enough noodles. The ambience and décor of this place is very cozy. During the night, the lighting is dim but enough so that you can see your food. Kudos to the employees for always coming around to make sure your drinks are full, and that any unnecessary plating is out of your way. Would I recommend? Yes. It was good but not amazing.

Been here twice during weekday lunch hour. The first time wasn’t as crowded as the second time so I’m guessing it varies. The service is good and the ramen is very tasty. So far I’ve had the Tonkotsu Ramen as well as the Tajima Ramen with pork chashu. The Tonkotsu Ramen is a simplified version of the Tajima. Personally, I prefer the latter. The side order of kim chee is just enough to hit the spot before the ramen arrives or to accompany it. My friend ordered the Spicy Sesame Ramen and the broth tasted really good! If you can handle the spice, that would be something to try!

Ok this was my first time ever eating Ramen. I had a great experience with this place. The service was great! Food was super flavorful and very satisfying. I ordered mine with the noodles on the side only because i was worried about having soggy noodles. But when the dish was brought to my table I added them in and they never got soggy. Next time i will just order it normal. When we got there i wasn’t sure«noodle soup» would leave me feeling satisfied but ITDID! We had two drinks, two appetizers and two bowls of ramen for $ 40 its was a great bargain and made for a fun evening out. I will definitely be coming to one of their other restaurants again.

Had been wanting to try this new joint after seeing the vacant space open up. My review is just«A-OK» for several reasons. 1) Value. $ 10 ramen with two tiny little strips of chicken just isn’t ok in my book, I feel like they kind of cheated it 2) Service. The girl with the piercings really didn’t seem to want to be there and«greeted» me with a «uhm, so you just walked in?» as I sat at the bar counter. Not a smile from her the entire time. The other two ladies were very pleasant though! To management: First impressions count from the second you walk in. Who knows, my review could have been totally different if staff is trained to be ready at a whim to greet with a smile! Unfortunately I likely wouldn’t go back for these reasons. The price of the bowl I got should have been $ 7.99 and go up from there with additions.

Walked here from the convention center and had a lovely dinner. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. Very modern/hip/casual vibe, typical of most ramen places. We got there a bit after 7 on a Saturday evening and there was no wait. Friends had a couple of appetizers — the karaage fried chicken(boneless) and the chili peppers, which were rather mild(not as spicy as I expected) but still flavorful. We ordered nearly the whole menu’s worth of ramen options — the vegan one, the tajima, tonkatsu, and spicy sesame. I was quite happy with my tajima ramen, which had all sorts of toppings in it — pork belly, seaweed, egg, chasu, garlic, etc. Very flavorful, fresh-tasting, and good noodles. I would’ve like a bit more broth, but otherwise it was great. Had a taste of the spicy sesame broth, which was indeed spicy and strongly sesame-flavored. Might not have been my preference to eat the whole bowl, but my friend trying ramen for the first time enjoyed it. I also got the ginger beer, which was quite good. Super random, but their chopsticks are also of good quality, for the disposable kind that you have to break in two :) Also, the prices were pretty typical for ramen restaurants. I’d definitely recommend this place!

We are big fans of the Tajimas in Kearny Mesa and Hillcrest, so we were excited to learn that they had opened up a new Tajima within 10 minutes walk of our home in downtown. Our first visit was promising, but there is room for improvement, judging from the standards of ramen deliciousness set by its siblings. For my curry ramen, the broth lacked the expected savory curry taste, and the noodles were a bit soggy and a bit clumped together. For my wife’s Tajima Ramen, the tonkotsu broth was also lacking in punch and the noodles a bit soggy. The karaage(fried chicken) was excellent, large and juicy, but not greasy. Service was super-friendly and super-prompt. Looking forward to updating this review as this Tajima gets more organized.

I didn’t know ramen could taste so good! I got the tajima ramen and was simply not ready for all the flavors it provided. The noodles and meats inside were perfectly cooked and the broth was just the right thickness to enhance every bite. If it were socially acceptable I’d have stuck a straw in my bowl just to slurp up the broth.

Mehh. Had higher hopes for this location :/ So they quoted me 25 mins for a party of 2 but when checking back in 15 minutes later, the employee said he had already called me and had skipped me since I wasn’t there. No big deal though, that was my fault so I waited for about 6 minutes after that to get sat. Once we sat down, someone came by right away to take our drink order. I ordered the cream ale beer and a water. 5 minutes later a 2nd employee asks for our drink order because the 1st didn’t put it in and had forgotten what it was. Okay, gave him the order. 10 minutes later our waters and my beer come out. We then ordered and waited for about 40 minutes for our appetizers and food, which came out together. Keep in mind one of the apps was edemame, which usually takes around 10 minutes at most to come out. So the reason for my 3 star rating is due to the lack of service we received. The actual food itself was okay, just like the hillcrest location — but it does NOT compare to the convoy location as that one is the best. The menu here was very limited as well, which means I could not order my spicy miso I usually get when going to Convoy. I opted for the spicy sesame and it satisfied, but again it was nothing great. Went in with a groupon(definetely get it if it’s still available) and our bill was super reasonable. I might go and give them a 2nd chance once the get their staffing situation handled.

My boyfriend needs his ramen fix at least once a week, so Tajima opening up in East Village was a real event for us. We ordered to go several times before going in for dinner. The food is good thus the 2nd star. It went downhill the day we decided to sit downhill. We waited for 15 minutes before someone acknowledged us. Two tables were available but no one was cleaning them, instead, the completely disorganized crew was busy doing laps around the tables without doing anything else than just walking around. I was starting to look for the hidden cameras… We finally sat down 20 minutes later and had to flag one of the waiters doing his laps to order at least 10 minutes later. «Sorry, we are out of rice tonight». Looking for those damn hidden cameras again! A Japanese restaurant running out of rice at 8.30pm on a Friday night, wow, wow, wow. You didn’t see that coming, you can’t cook some more? So many questions… Moving on. Had to flag someone(again) to get our check and get the hell out of there. No one in this restaurant seems to know what they are doing which is sad when you know how good the service is at the other locations.

Perfect weather for some ramen! Tajima is situated on the corner E St and 9th in East Village. Large picture windows and friendly staff welcome you. Surprisingly parking was not at problem as there is a nearby structure and metered curbside spots all around. My friend was there before me but as I walked in the hostess immediately smiled and greeted me with such enthusiasm that I was tempted to let her seat me wherever she wanted! Once joined with my party my drink order was taken and we were given a minute to look over the menu. We started with the German potato appetizer: garlic fries topped with pork belly, onions and mayo which came on a sizzling cast iron skillet and perfect for two. For lunch I ordered the spicy sesame ramen with thick noodles and my friend had the tomkatsu with thin noodles. The broth in my soup was so full of flavor and not overly spicy. Portion size for the price is spot on as well. Japanese craft beer is available and I recommend the Echigo Red Ale! So good! Because of the many sides, sakes and service, I give Tajima the«good as it gets«for ramen perfect 5 rating!

The food was very good– Though no Ramen Egg in my bowl– That’s my favorite part! I will be back again– and ask for the egg.

Love this Tajima! I love the design of the restaurant, it is different than the others(and a lot more hip in my opinion). The servers were extremely nice and welcoming. Normally when I eat ramen at the other Tajimas I would get this weird aftertaste from the soup/noodles, but when I had the ramen here I didn’t get that so that’s a plus! Other than that slight difference, it tasted the same. I just found out they have the German potato fries, I liked it at another tajima so I am excited to try this when I come back!

New location in East village. Lots of seating. Nice glass windows view outside but they need to fix the flooring. Tajima ramen bar is our fave in town. Parking is a pain but good luck. Love the foodies. Tonkotsu and Tajima ramen, Brussels sprouts tempura, German potato fries, garlic edamame are always our faves. Overall CS friendly atmosphere. Not too busy. Will come back soon. Highly recommended;)

We are super stoked this place opened up closer to us dt. It’s caddy corner from the post office. Everything was just as awesome as the hillcrest location. Nice to have a bit more space that the other spot. I’d recommend the spicy sesame ramen with thick noodles. Service was great too. Our waiter, Chris, was very friendly and patient. Be back soon

First time coming, I had the Curry Chicken Ramen(that’s not exactly what it’s called, but youll know which one it is, as there are only 5 ramen options) Very delicious! Staff was nice! I’ll be back for sure, thanks!
