San Diego is known to have some of the best weather on the planet. We are fortunate enough to enjoy moderate temperatures almost every day of the year. Let’s face it, we are a long way from the icy waters of the arctic and the only Polar Bears that you are likely to encounter live at the world famous San Diego Zoo. Polar Bear Plunge brings arctic summers to San Diego. Polar bears plunge into a chilly pool and seem quite comfortable in their surrogate habitat. These playful bears enjoy a spacious exhibit with a bear den, toys, floating logs and plenty of food to nosh on. One of their favorite treats is the carrot, however they need about 140 pounds of meat to satisfy their hunger. When you visit the Polar Bear Plunge you will not only be able to observe these playful bears, you will also learn about conservation. San Diego Zoo has partnered with Polar Bears International to develop programs to study and protect these lovable creatures. The exhibit features several educational exhibits like three dimensional maps of the changing ice on earth, information about their diet and other facts to stimulate discussion about conservation. Full sized Polar Bear Sculpture climbing toys excite young children and give their parents a little break. If you are not able to travel to the San Diego Zoo, they also offer a web site with a polar bear cam that you can watch right now!
