J. Dayton Smith Recital Hall

This hall sounds great, definitely come to any concert here. The SDSU school of music has many great ensembles who perform here regularly, including the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensembles, Chamber Choir, and the Aztec Concert Choir (I could go on, but there are too many to name). You’ll have a great view of the stage from anywhere in the audience. The best part is that almost all concerts during afternoon weekdays are FREE, while evening/​weekend performances are always affordable.
Need help with parking? Park for $ 1/​hour in Parking Structure 4. Head up to floor 8 and walk across the bridge away from 55^th street (Viejas Arena/​Aztec Recreation Center). Pass the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences building on your left. The music building will be next on your right. Smith Recital Hall will be at the end of the building (across the plaza from the Don Powell Theatre). Hope this helps!

The J. Dayton Smith Recital Hall is the principal performance space for most music performances that take place at SDSU’s School of Music and Dance. The campus venue seats approximately 300 audience members and boasts a fully computerized theatrical lighting system, side lighting trees, theatrical drapes, front curtain and Marley floor,. Additionally, there is a state of the art sound system and recording studio.
Conveniently located right behind Viejas Arena, the Smith Recital Hall is not particularly large but it is the perfect size for presenting intimate performances of music and dance. The box office window is right there in the front, you buy your tickets, and walk right in. The seats are cushy and very comfortable and I like that the steps are lit up so you can see where you are going.
Deducted 1 Unilocal STAR for no nearby parking. My son & I attended a World Music show there yesterday & thankfully, we knew where to go and where to park. Otherwise, a clueless soul could wander around campus and be at the mercy of asking the SDSU students for help on directions to the Recital Hall.
