Family Karate is great! Both of my children attend this studio and they love it! They first started off taking Family Karate classes at the local YMCA but quickly decided they wanted to get more serious and attend classes more than once a week. The instructors are fantastic and very encouraging. They are very patient with my 6 year old, who needs a little extra help with focusing. They encourage following the tenants at home and throughout the year have special«challenges» to earn badges, t-shirts, etc. Even in very large classes, the instructors run a very organized program, and get everyone involved. My kids love it so much that my younger one had his 6th birthday party here! Mr. Melby, one of the instructors, led my son and his buddies through a fun class. They learned punching, kicking and blocking. My son was able to «lead a class.» They set up fun obstacle courses and finished up the party by cutting the cake with a real samurai sword. My son loved it. It was also great because you could bring in your own food and drinks. If you are considering a Karate program in this area, I would look into Family Karate for sure!

I have been a student at family karate for 9years. Ever since I have been training there I have lost 30 pounds and kept them off. My daughter also trains there, she has gained a self confidence that was not there before. I highly recommend this school .it has been great.

Five Stars!!! I no longer attend Family Karate due to health issues, however, both of my children earned their adult first degree black belts there and my husband participates in the Krav Maga classes they offer. The instructors are all very supportive, while expecting the most from the students at their level. A four year old white belt will not be required to do what a sixteen year old black belt candidate is expected to do. The values that Family Karate promotes are instrumental to building excellent character. Both of my children started at the age of four and still practice at sixteen and eighteen. My daughter’s national merit essay was based on the tenets that she learned in Family Karate(and she earned National Merit Finalist). Family Karate expects a lot from their students both physically in the studio, educationally at school and in character at home and everywhere. Sometimes it is hard to see the methodology of the teaching until you have watched a child go through from beginning to end. All of the students at Family Karate who work hard and earn their adult black belts are very competitive. Tournament participation is a requirement of adult black belt. Younger children are also encouraged to compete, but not required to. Family Karate instructors understand that each child has different abilities and is developmentally ready at different times. Rather than focusing on weaknesses, the instructors build on strengths. As the mother of two first degree black belts from Family Karate, I can say with confidence that the program works.

Very nice teachers, but annoying billing practices! Impossible to get a hold of anyone at the school when it comes to canceling your membership This is not a competitive or even semi-competitive karate school. Instructors don’t focus on the form so the everything is sloppy and unfortunately kids learn very bad habits when it comes to basic karate moves. One one positive note, all of the teachers are great with kids. If you’re looking for a cute, kind, happy place to take small children too and learn a bit of discipline and respect for teachers, Family Karate is great. Just don’t expect them to become good at martial arts.
