Wow! What a great place to park your car!!! They paved the road and there is lots of room. I parked my truck here. Then I walked up to the top of South Fortuna Peak. If you come up/down the south approach to the peak, I recommend you bring a walking stick because the trail is in bad shape. It is easy to fall. The ground is sandy and steep. If you walk the north approach, it’s less seanic, but samer walking.

This is a good trailhead starting point to hike North Fortuna(and may as well bag South Fortuna while you are there). The parking lot is never crowded, most decide to simply park on the street — both options are free, convenient, and safe. There is a porto-pot, a few picnic tables, maps at the trailhead.

This bridge is basically a back entrance to the Mission Trails Regional Park. You can literally hike all the way from Tierrasanta to Santee via this entrance. If you take the Clairemont Mesa Blvd exit and go east all the way till it dead ends, you will find this bridge. There are lots of power lines over head, so you can imagine they built all these paths for SDG&E service roads. You can really hear the 60hz hum when walking around here, it’s pretty loud. The entrance has a cul-de-sac at the end with plenty of parking if you wish to leave your car and hike around. The bridge is a bit worn out and you cannot drive across it but you are allowed to cycle or walk. The trails out in this area are perfect for mountain bike riding or hiking if you wish. I don’t suggest running out here due to the uneven terrain and very steep hills. If you decide to venture out towards the Mission Trails park, bring lots of water because the climb back is a good one.

The pedestrian bridge that spans the little ravine at the east end of Clairemont Mesa Blvd that you have to cross over to get into Mission Hills Regional Park is sooooo cool. It is an iron frame construction bridge with wooden planks set in that you walk/run/ride on. The bridge will actually move a bit as you cross which is kinda a cool sensation. The area all burned(including the wood planks) in the Cedar Fire, and thus the area is quite interesting as it recovers from the devestating fire. I love this place to enter the park, as well as the bridge you cross. YAY for bridges. I heart bridges.
