I went to Dr. Tawfillis on a referral from a dentist in Solana Beach. I already knew what needed to be done since I had gone to two other oral surgeons, but they wouldn’t just give me a quote over the phone so I had to go in. I made an appt around lunch time thinking it would be quick. 1) I waited for 45 mins before Dr. Tawfillis saw me for less than 5 mins to look in my mouth and confirm everything I knew. All I really wanted was the estimate because in the dental/oral surgery world there seems to be no standard even when they are all in-network providers. His staff gave me a mock up of the pricing and told me my insurance wouldn’t cover part of it even though I just had found out they actually would since coverage changed earlier that year. Anyways — besides the irritating long wait for 5 minutes or less of time(oh yeah I forgot to say they wanted me to watch a video on wisdom teeth extraction when that’s not what I was there for), they were in my opinion fraudulent in their billing of my insurance. My insurance covers problem specific oral exams with no copay on my part. They billed it as a consultation which by Cigna definition means they were not going to provide the service. What this means is that instead of getting $ 50 or so from Cigna, they get $ 50 from them and $ 52 from me. I called them out on this and they said that’s just how they bill. Really? I wish I could just bill people in which ever way would get me the most money. I called Cigna and reported this but they told Cigna they did a consultation, not an oral exam, when in fact he did look at my xrays, looked in my mouth and was not consulting for a dentist since the work had to be done by an oral surgeon. After complaining to my family of their shoddy behavior and possibly fraudulent billing practices I learned that they had also tried to rip off my mom and my grandfather. I recommend you only go here if you want to get ripped off. Whether Dr. Tawfillis is aware of how is staff poorly plans his schedule to keep patients waiting excessive amounts of time and how they fraudulently bill insurance — hey I don’t know. But you are judged by the company you keep and the office staff you hire, so he is just as accountable.
