On a search for the best southern style, chicken and waffle spot in SD, I was excited to try this place. But that excitement quickly got deflated as soon as took a few bites: The chicken was on the oily and bland side. The syrup was on the thick and sweet end. The waffle did not do anything to make this any more memorable. What really didn’t work is how everything came together. I basically could of had the same fulfilling experience going to Ralph’s and picking up Eggo waffles, Aunt Jemima syrup and getting their precooked fried chicken at the deli department. On a good note, the spot is fairly modern and clean. There’s also a flat screen and a small outside patio. The service was nice and friendly. I wouldn’t might trying them again but would definitely try the other options on the menu instead.

Very nice people… I’ll probably give them another chance one day, but I thought the wings were just ok and they charged me for green’s but didn’t put them in my bag. Kind of a bummer. Everyone deserves a second chance and i will give you one Annie Belle.

I was in the mood for some friend chicken and waffles, so I decided on this place. I immediately knew what I wanted to I ordered right as I sat down. The chicken and waffle were only $ 6.99( ) The fried chicken wings were great. They were well breaded and crispy. The wings were plump, juicy, and tender.( ) I could not get enough of them. The waffles were good. I noticed they added some spices, such as nutmeg, and a few other spices, but I prefer my waffles plain made with buttermilk. These were also on the thin side. They were good, but just not the way I regularly eat them.( ) The service was good. The place is small inside with a small patio outside. For me, this place was all about the fried wings, hence the 4 stars. I would give the waffles 3 stars out of personal preference. So, a solid 3.5 stars is in order.

This place is super legit! I’ve lived in ATL eating this kind of food a few times a week for 12 years and Annie Belle’s is right up there with the best of them. Catfish is my favorite here. Done so perfectly with the crunch of the batter and and the succulent fresh flakes of fish inside. Fried wings are really good. Be nice if they were a hair crispier, but still really good. Collards are on point. Just the right amount of vinegar taste. Black eye peas are pretty good. The cornbread and hush puppies are a little dry, but about average. Rice and gravy is ok. Best iced tea I’ve had on the west coast. So fresh and thirst quenching. Need to come back and try the rest. The service here is the best. This place is the perfect hangover cure. Old Soul Train playing on the TV extra bonus.

I liked this place. It wasn’t as mind blowing as some other restaurants, but overall I cannot fault it. I got the 3 granny wings and big bowl of Greens. I got my wings sticky(honey). I guess the bottom line is this… was the food bad? No. I enjoyed it. Would I go back? Probably not unless I was in the area. Didn’t find it especially amazing. Was it better than KFC or Popeyes? Yes. The sides were not great though. I had corn and fries, it was… underwhelming. Food came out quickly. Only one lady working but she was really friendly and hustled so props to that.

My friend asked me to accompany him today to this restaurant and I was hoping to finally find a good soul food joint, Well, after today’s experience I am still searching., My friend asked before he ordered if the greens were fresh and the server replied yes. He discovered when he got home to finally eat his meal that the greens were canned! The customer service is terrible! No one offered us anything to drink while we were waiting though it was very hot today. And we waited almost 30 minutes for ONE to go order and not once did the«server» come by and let us know that the order was taking a little longer. The cashier was away from her area for most of the time though there is a list of duties behind the counter that says not to leave the cash register unattended. Three people walked in and no one was there to greet them. After 15 minutes, the cashier finally walked up to the register, said hello and then proceeded to cash out a bill, She didn’t offer any seating nor stated that she would be with them in a moment as she walked away. After another 10 minutes of waiting the trio left. I wonder how often that happens per day. Oh. there is more! My friend ordered a slice of sweet potato pie with his order. The server finally comes out with his order and said that there wasn’t any sweet potato pie! Don’t you know what your restaurant has available when you start your shift? A woman peeked out from the kitchen and in an annoyed tone said that there actually is pie available! Well, this was to be another ten minute wait to get a to go slice of pie. This was our first visit and we will never return to this ghetto, unprofessional and unorganized«restaurant» again!

We went for breakfast on a Monday morning. It was my first time and I was excited! I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it is on the inside! I don’t know what I expected but like I said, I was surprised! I didn’t experience the Southern Hospitality other reviewers mentioned but the food came out pretty quick and the waitress was nice enough. My friend and I both ordered the chicken and waffle. The wings were pretty big and the waffle was just big enough. Nutmeg and cinnamon flavor in the waffle made it really nice. The chicken was well seasoned and crispy. Not the best I’ve had but tasty. I’d like to bring my daughter and try the famous greens and some fried fish.

Ok, after not having been here in almost 2 years, me and the hubby, go back for breakfast. I get the chicken and waffles. The food was good, chicken plump and juicy and the blaring music is gone, way more subdued so you can talk. Waitresses had long, curved purple ghetto nails, but, what do you expect, short, clean, French manicures? Ours had to put her fingers sideways to write our order. One thing: get rid of the Mexican hot sauce containers you put pancake syrup and hot sauce in. How about a nice syrup dispenser and small hot sauce bottles! WHAT, you think we’ll steal your condiments so you serve them in open hot sauce plastic containers from Smart ‘n Final??! Get some class. 6 plastic cheapo hot sauce containers with pancake syrup and hot sauce in them crowded onto a way-too-small plate looks ghetto as hell. Try a condiment caddy. Next year.

This by far one of the best soul food restaurants that I have ever been to in san Diego. The catfish nuggets are to die for and the sticky wings are some of the best wings I have had by far and the hush puppies are to die for. I highly recommend if your an out of towner and looking for some comfort food this by far one of the best places to go!!!

Me and a co-worker were craving some chicken and waffles after our gym fix :). Wouldn’t you know it our search lead us to Annie Belles. We were quite impressed we ordered the 20 piece chicken wings and 2 waffles as well as a side of macoroni and cheese, and potato salad yes we were hungry! Oh before I forget they do give you cornbread and it is made perfectly! What can I say I have no complaints on the food it was delicious and the staff were very friendly and made us feel welcomed. We loved it so much for that whole month we went once a week. I’m always satisfied going to Annie Belles :)

If you see sides dishes like Mac n Cheese, Black Eyed Peas, «Greens,» and Rice & Gravy, you know your’re in for some good ol’ soul food. They got the goods to compliment their signature fried chicken, as well as fried seafood staples like catfish, shrimp, and snapper. Unlike a lot of soul food places, the ambience here is cozy and inviting. An added bonus was that there were no crack-heads in the parking lot trying to sell me a stuffed animal(see my review on Huffman’s BBQ). They got plush booths, as well as couple of flat screens to watch Coming to America, or re-runs of Sanford & Son.

Fried chicken: It’s not just for breakfast anymore. I actually ate here for dinner with enough leftover for a midnight snack and for breakfast again. If you have a pet cow as I do this is a great place to go until you can find some magic beans to trade it for. All the flavor and fat you’d find in a cow with none of the guilt. The décor is nice too – soul food with a touch of class, black food with white table cloths, outdoor food with utensils.

If Luther vandross was alive I believe he would ask the servers to turn down his own music so he can actually concentrate on ordering.“dance with my father again” was blaring at max as soon as you pull the handle to enter. When u first walk in, the décor is amazing(for a soul food place). About 7 flat screens all playing black movies and tv shoes, from«the jeffersons» to «the game». Which is ok if you are purposely only catering to one race. What African Americans call soul food another race may call comfort food. Just want to put that out there. I had the greens and wings with a side of red beans and rice. The greens have no flavor what so ever and I believe they were canned. Had that canned glory greens after taste to them. The wings are ginormous. To I pull apart the ostrich wing and sunk my fangs into them. I believe 7 tears fell from my eyes due to lack of taste. The red beans and rice was ok, with I had more rice. Wings are not that great at all. Greens arent even flavored with a smoked meat of some sort. Short story shorter. If u can cook. Stay at home.

My husband and daughter were out of town so I treated my son to dinner out the other night. Me: What do you feel like? Him: Fried Chicken. KFC? Me: No! I Unilocaled it up and decided on Bonnie Jean’s Soul Food but alas, we got there as they were closing(at 7pm???) so I kept driving south on 54th St. and stumbled upon Annabelle’s. My son is a wings freak so I knew he’d be game. As other reviewers mentioned, we waited a while to get our food so keep that in mind if you have somewhere to be. They put cornbread and butter on the table to munch while you’re waiting. Thank God for the butter because the cornbread muffins where dry, dry, dry. The boy ordered the party wings buffalo style and they were really good. They seemed to have the sauce under the fried breading. Is that possible? It was definitely interesting. It was also different than the normal Franks and butter sauce I’m used to. This was vinegary. I wasn’t hungry enough for a full meal so I ordered a few sides instead. Collard greens, mac and cheese and a Granny wing. Turns out I’m not a fan of collard greens. Bummer! The macaroni and cheese was good but I don’t think there was any real cheese involved. Only the orangy processed stuff seemed to be present. The Granny wing was huge and plenty of chicken for me(especially since I also sampled a party wing). The flavor was good but not spectacular. The lemonade was also good but like the mac and cheese, no lemons were harmed in the process. I’m thinking it was good ol’ Country Time..

Luckily for Annie Belles, there aren’t alot of places in SD that serve Chicken and waffles! But that’s only one of the things that makes this place special.. the southern hospitality is second to none! Upon arrival, Leslie greeted me with a smile and Uncle Cleveland took my order. I wanted to try one of everything on the menu, but since that wasn’t realistic, we settled on cornbread muffins(YUMM!) chicken and waffles(waffle was DELICIOUS!) red beans and rice(more YUMM!) and some kind of fish(I don’t eat seafood so I can’t speak on it) The one thing that really impressed me was when I asked the head cook(also the owner… Maurice) if his greens and gumbo had pork in them, he told me that he only uses turkey sausage! Prices are reasonable… and Maurice is a CUTIE… so enjoy!

The atomospher was great love the setting. I had ordered the 3 wings/waffles and side of greens. My girl friend had the side of greens chicken breast and mash potatoes. My dish was okay. The chicken was alright. Some really big pieces I like that. The one downfall was that it seem like there was more batter than chicken didn’t quite fill me up really. The waffles was ok too. Annebelle is creative in trying to make the waffle their own. They add cinnimon to the waffle batter that I wasn’t really a fan of. Not at all like Roscoe’s so you need to go in with an open mind. And love it for what it is. I agree with the above reviews, the service was horrilbe. And it wasn’t even that crowded for a sunday @ 12pm… It takes forever to get your food. Regardless if you’re busy or not service and on time delivery is key.

Great food, ok service. We saw an ad in the weekly reader and had to try this place. My husband and I are huge fans of southern comfort food. We went on a Sunday around 1pm. Crowded but we were seated right away. The place was very cute, nicely decorated, diverse crowd. I ordered the chicken and waffles, side of mac/cheese and corn bread muffins. My husband ordered the fried cornmeal catfish platter with fries and collard greens. We both ordered sweet tea. Three huge chicken wings came with my chicken/waffles. The waffle was OK, different from other chicken/waffles I’ve had. More on the flat side. But the chicken… OMG, delicious. Insanely delicious. Cooked perfectly too. The mac/cheese was great, I tried the collard greens and I think they were fantastic, best greens I’ve had out in a restaurant. My husband cleaned his plate and also loved the chicken wings. The service was a bit slow but it was very busy. Although, everyone was very friendly. I really wanted to try the peach cobbler but they were out of it. Next time!

We checked this place on a lark because my partner’s co-worker had mentioned it and we wanted to try some place new. Overall impression — OK, but not great. We were seated in a booth with a light hanging over it like we were being interrogated at Guantanamo. The naked light bulb was really annoying until we found a suitable sitting position to talk across the table with one another. He order snapper and I ordered fried chicken, we also ordered some sides. Snapper was good. Fried chicken was delicious and served nice and hot. Only problem — the big juicy breast was raw inside so I could only eat the outer meat. I still got enough to eat, but raw chicken is a big no-no. Sides were not so hot. Sweet potatos were too sweet! I guess some like them with a lot of extra sugar, but it was overpowering. Side salad was wilted spinach with some carrots, celery, cucumber and tomoato thrown on top. Mac and cheese was ok — could have been cheesier! The service was mediocre, we never had our drinks refilled. Check out was bizarre, as the gal at the register didn’t really seem to know how to handle a credit card transaction with tip. So — main courses were good(not counting raw chicken that was just a really big piece), sides ok, service ok. In future, we think we’ll order chicken to go and fix our own sides at home.

I’d noticed this for some time, but it was not open yet. Tonight, my boyfriend and I saw that it was open and we decided to check it out. According to the waiter, they have only been open for twenty-some days. The food on the menu is southern inspired, i.e., fried chicken, greens, cat fish, etc. The service was good, we were seated promptly and the waiter was very polite. We ordered a twenty piece chicken wing plate, which in retrospect, was a bit too much for two people. We also ordered the mixed greens and a plate of mac and cheese. The wings were juicy and very tasty. The greens were fresh and seasoned well. The mac and cheese was comforting and not too greasy. Besides fried, the wings are also offered in BBQ sauce, grilled, or honey glazed. Although, for the grilled wings, we were told there was half an hour wait since they are made to order. The bar does not seem fully operational since they do not offer any alcohol. For a strip mall joint, the décor was very nice, and offer patio dining. And there is also a smoking section located in the rear. The music is oldies and vintage R&B /soul. You might find yourself singing along before, during and after dinner. For the late night eaters on Friday nights, they are open until 4:00 am to accommodate all the late night party people. They offer a midnight buffet from midnight to 4:00 am… we have still to check this one out. We are quite definitely going to return to check out the BBQ wings and the collard greens. If you ever find yourself in the Oak Park area, make sure to pay them a visit. It will be worth the visit.

They closed the restaurant, noooooo!!! I loved this place, so sad.
