Rude staff over the phone. Don’t give straight answers to straight questions. Not considerate about people’s dietary needs like halal. They should close down.

Very nice and friendly folks. Surprisingly flavorful food in the middle of nowhere. Honest Home style Indian/Pakistani cuisine. Handmade rotis were excellent. Curries and salans especially the vegetarian ones were very tasty. Good find near SFO

I agree with the below review. In fact I went here to see why so many people had been such haters… The food here is great. If you don’t need someone to have conversation with and want good food come here. I found the owners nice and efficient. Great price, great portions, awesome experience. I’ll recommend this place for sure!

This is a good place to eat authentic Indian foods. Although I cannot approve the origin of the people serving the food here, the food tasted more like Indian. They had both Veg and non veg varieties and I got my food in no time and it was hot as well. I am removing 2 stars because of the cleanliness factor. This place is not clean and I see only one guy doing everything and that guy looked liked he has never smiled in his entire life. Other than these two factors, Amma is good.

Such haters. This is literally a hole in the wall and no you aren’t going to get excellent service or sit in a beautiful dining area, but if you want traditional Indian food cooked homemade style then this is your spot. I support my local mom and pop spots and Amma’s Curry house is just that. Dishes change daily and they always have fresh Samosas on hand which are my favorite. Amma and her husband are good people so if you walk in and can’t handle it, then please keep it moving.

Attention all dedicated patrons: I am sad to report that the business is now for sale so visit while you can. Unfortunately, I only found this place last month and it soon became my favorite place. I’ve had the chicken curry, goat curry, pokaras, samosas, dal, rotis and of course the chai tea. ALL were a joy to eat.

This place has never let me down. Consistent delicious traditional Indian food with Fijian flare. Er well, to my understanding it’s Fijian style Indian food. The chicken curry had never let me down. Come in for their lunch special where you get a healthy portion of chicken curry with your choice of basmati rice or roti. I love how thin the sauce for the curry is. I could drink it, the flavors are amazing! The rice is also cooked well. I’ve also tried their eggplant curry and that is just as good too. This place is vegetarian friendly as they have multiple vegetarian choices. I’ve also tried their pakoras and those are to die for with the tamarind sauce(chutney?). SAMOSASSAMOSASSAMOSAS. I AMSOINLOVEWITHTHEIRSAMOSAS! I live in Daly City but dont mind making the drive for their samosas! They’re cheap too! Gosh so goooood. I recommend this place to anyone looking to enjoy some traditional curry and various Indian goodies :)

I’ve been having lunch here almost every day for the last month. Wow! The food is delicious, precisely as served in an Indian/Fijian HOME, not some goofy restaurant focused on secondary considerations such as «color balance of the food», etc. It’s portions are ample, it is very affordable and most importantly it is DELICIOUS. If you want to eat like a human, dine here. Real food for real people. Five stars!

it was a refreshing change from the sea of indian/fiji food joints in the san francisco /bay area to eat at this place. if you are looking for ambience, well decorated place then skip this place, but if you are looking for some delicious and tasty food then this is one of the places to go. The Roti’s were soft, the biryani was not spiced up and very palatable. the curries were flavoursome and finger licking good. i sure had a hearty mean at this place. People were super friendly and made sure we were comfortable and checked on us a few times. it was a good experience with some delicious food

If u have ever had indian food at home from Fiji not India then u know this spot is cool. The currys are awesome but could be a little more spicy. And the roti is actually roti not that pita wannabe bread. Will definitely come back to this place. You obviously know nothing about Indian food if think it’s spicy. Indian food is spicy. If u don’t want something spicy, go to an Indian restaurant and order buttered chicken.

I am in love with Indian food lately and this was close by to where I was staying. Once inside you will see a few tables against a window and the kitchen to the left and a weird arrangement of what may be a market of some sort. There is a big glass case of DVDs and some packaged Indian foods, also a fridge with I’m not sure what inside it. The food is kept in a buffet style case and from there you choose what you want. I arrived around 7:30 pm for some takeout. The food looked like it had been in the cases all day. I went ahead and asked for a vegetarian meal. Once home I began to eat and it was spicy! Yummy but too spicy for me… made my face sweat. So I couldn’t eat much of it.

I am Indian and super-picky about my Indian food. This place has my stamp of approval, and my heart. I love this place so much! I come here for lunch every day. They have a $ 6 lunch special where you get 2 rotis(Indian tortillas) or rice along with chicken curry, or 2 vegetarian curries. The chicken curry is delicious — the chicken practically melts off the bones into your mouth. The curry is a broth more so than a curry, but very flavorful(although some may find it a tad salty). I LOVE their vegetarian curries. LOVE them. I always get dal(lentil soup) and either the channa masala or the eggplant in coconut milk. Their menu varies every day. The channa masala is the best I’ve tasted, although it’s very spicy(non-Indians be warned). The eggplant in coconut milk is amazing, and it melts in your mouth. They are always playing Bollywood movies, so you can watch while you eat. This is also a grocery store/video rental place. I bought an Indian fruit cake for $ 3 that lasted me a few weeks — if you’ve never tasted Indian fruit cake before, you should. There’s a free parking lot which always has space by the Los Primos meat market a few stores away, so you can either park in the street or in the parking lot.

Amma’s Curry House… a very low-key, hole in the wall joint on San Mateo Ave in San Bruno! When I stepped in the other week, the kind owner welcomed me and my group like old friends. We all asked«gee, when did you open?» Imagine our surprise when he told us «3 years ago!» OOPS! The thing is… if you were going to rate this place on décor… it would fall into 2 star range. One of those places you walk or drive past, en route to another destination and just never make the effort to get there! It’s part Indian grocery store, part restaurant and cafeteria style at that! Daily specials are noted on a sandwich board(there are no menus) Basically you sashay over to the counter, there were about 8 – 9 dishes to choose from and you tell them what you want! After hemming and hawing for about 5 minutes… the owner(Reddy) asked«how about I just give you a sampler of everything, along with rice and samosas?» SOLD! Here is what we tried: Chicken Curry: Really delicious! Tender chicken, succulent, a bit spicey… definitely a curry man’s/woman’s curry! 5STARS Lamb Curry: The lamb was cooked perfectly, not gamey. this dish was much spicier than the chicken. 5STARS Samosas/Pakoras: Good, could have been warmer… taste and texture were there… a bit bland but still enjoyable 3STARS Eggplant in Coconut milk! EXCELLENT! 20STARS!!! Creamy sauce, tender eggplant simmered in coconut milk, curry, some indigenous root something or other(Reddy can explain it better, ask him) was just really delicious and reason enough for me to visit again! Naan/Roti: Was just«meh»…seemed to fall flat(literally) could be that it was a bit bland, that it wasn’t warm. I was expecting it to be more along the lines of naan I’ve had elsewhere… or the roti at Coconut Bay or Straits that you basically would take a bullet for…2 Stars Hard boiled eggs/curry sauce: I know, sounds odd… I thought so too. Then again, I love curry, love eggs… what the hell? Was quite good! Again, it perhaps suffered from not being as warm as I would expect… still…4STARS. Rice: Your basic steamed rice… perfectly done and the perfect foil for all the other dishes sampled…3 stars Considering the variety and quantity of so many dishes(and the quality!!) We were even more in shock to see our bill(for 3 people) was just under $ 40.00! To sum it up… it’s probably not the place you will bring a client to land a multi million dollar deal, propose marriage or celebrate your parents 50th anniv! …it IS most defintely a great spot for people who love great food, reasonable prices, warm service(from the boss man Reddy and his lovely Mrs, Amma(for whom the place was named) Reddy describes his food as Indian, with Figian influences! Amma’s is open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week! They do take ATM/Credit…come enjoy a meal and get some grocery/CD shopping accomplished while you’re at it!!!

The place is right around the corner from Artichoke Joes. The area is all 1 hour parking. The place is a restaurant on the left hand and a grocery store on the right. The tables weren’t clean and the guy never offered water and even had to get our own utensils. Came here for their specifically for their goat curry today and what a disappointment. My friend had the lamb curry with rice. We added a cup of chi, an order of samosa and a can of Arizona tea which came out to be a $ 20 lunch. My can of tea from the fridge had dust. The goat was served in a little metal bowl, the size of the individual rice bowls in Chinese restaurants. The rice which they charged me $ 2.00 was 2 scoops of a dry under cooked long grain rice. The samosas were not spicy and tasted more like pumpkin than potato. The flavor was OK, just not good and certainly not great.

I came here around 8 or 9 on a weekday when they were about to close up shop. I was craving some Indian food, so luckily the woman who seems to be the owner graciously stayed open for another ten minutes to let me get some food. I got some Roti, Rice, Chicken Curry, and Lamb Curry. I got this to go and the whole assortment of food was very reasonably price. The food I can imagine(I’m not Indian, but I can imagine it) as very home-style Indian/Fiji cooking. The curry was in my impression more«Southern» style and a bit more liquid than the«Northern» or Pakistani style curry. It was delicious though, and definitely a nice change of pace from the typical Punjabi style cuisine. The store is as the rest of the Unilocalers are saying, «suspiciously» half stocked. I wonder how they stay in business? I’m curious how the lunch buffet tastes, and I wouldn’t mind giving it a try in the future. The $ 5.50 weekend lunch special sounds cheap, as does the $ 8.99 buffet. However pleasant the change of pace with the home-style nature of the food was though, it is as they say«nothing to call home about» but this place is close to my home so it works in a pinch!

This stretch of downtown San Bruno has several Indian stores, including some grocery stores, sari shops and a jewelry store(but no sweets shop yet — too bad). Amma’s is a grocery store with prepared foods(Indian food with a Fijian touch). I’m not sure how the Fijian touch comes in. As a grocery store, it doesn’t carry much merchandise. The shelves are half empty. They have cigarettes, frozen foods, spices, cereal, canned food, ghee, Indian sweets, and hair products. It has a run down, not too clean appearance but I saw a guy in a turban eating something so I felt reassured. A third of the store is occupied by the dining area. They have a lunch buffet($ 8.99). I went after they had turned the grill off, so the dosas weren’t available unless I wanted to wait 20 minutes. I asked about the idli on the menu — they didn’t have any. They have roti, curries(veg, non veg), dal, samosas, etc. All the meat is halal and they have daily specials. They even have egg curry which isn’t that common. Rotis are $ 1 each. Everything had been cooked and was stored in a metal container. Some of the curries looked quite oily(pool of oil on top) and others just looked like they’d been sitting around for hours. Pumpkin curry($ 3.99): Mashed pumpkin purée with onion, garlic, mustard seeds, and whole chiles. The texture was thick and mushy. The spices didn’t seem complex to me and it was too salty. I’d prefer pumpkin cubes to pumpkin mush. The pumpkin wasn’t sweet. The portion size was generous though. Dal($ 2.99): A pretty standard rendition with lentils, mustard seeds, cumin, turmeric, garlic, onion, etc. — thin and soupy, also too salty. It was okay. I should have gone to Curry Corner Takeaway:

Dear Amma, I’m infatuated with Indian food and I hate driving all the way into the city for some decent grub. Forget all the places in San Mateo, I don’t feel like paying $ 16 for 3 small but flavorful pieces of chicken tikka kebab(Roti). While your lamb curry is good and spicy, there are a ton of bones! If I order one more lamb curry dish I’d have enough bones to make a lamb skeleton worthy for the Academy of Science. You have alot going for your restaurant so far, friendly service, excellent prices, plenty of seats. Plus a monopoly on Indian food in the 94080. Just work on the bones issue, offer a couple more hot dishes to fulfill my Indian lunch craving, and a few more tweaks here and there and I will be a happy camper. Sincerely, Earl G
