Second Fridays of the month! This ain’t no typical First Friday art walk. The other reviewers are absolutely right– this is a low-key intimate art stroll. It’s not fueled by alcohol and live music like the First Friday at the Blue Star Arts Complex. Not’s not a bad thing, but this art walk is much more relaxed and more about the art. The galleries are somewhat spread out, but I’ve seen that they sometimes offer a bus or something to take you around to the various galleries. Alternatively, a rental bike can be picked up at the Pearl, and it’s a short ride away to the first gallery. It’s a great opportunity to get to meet the artists and really interact with the art. The galleries do usually offer free food and drinks, which is pretty great! I appreciate the fact that I’ve never seen the same exhibit twice at any of the galleries, so they’re always rotating in new art! Make it your first priority to go to Second Friday!

If you enjoy art walks, but you feel that First Friday has gotten too big for its britches, then head north for Tobin Hill’s Second Friday. I feel quality of the art is better, there’s live music at High Wire Arts, and more often than not, there’s free booze(donations are always encouraged). The artists are usually available to consult with potential buyers, and there’s a great sense of community among the artists and the spectators. It’s also family and pet friendly, so feel free to bring the kids and pooch! Aside from High Wire Arts, other venues include San Antonio College, the Josephine Theater, and some homes open up into art galleries for a couple hours. This is probably one of San Antonio’s best kept secrets, but I’m willing to share it!

The is a great event to attend and learn and make friends. It is not the«Mini Fiesta» that First Friday has devolved into. You get to see and experience art, talk to the artists, meet neighbors, and have a good time. For all the sticklers, the address I listed is for one of the artists(he helped start this) but all the sites are near here at the intersection of Dewey, Josephine, and N. St. Mary’s. Kudos to Tobin Hill! Takes place every 2nd Friday. See you there.
