Ordered three chicken puffy tacos. The chicken, lettuce, tomato and cheese were great! The puffy tortilla not so puffy! They had a jukebox playing oldies and Tejano. The prices are so low it made me smile. You can drive in and get waited at car too! Waitresses are fast and friendly. Good for a quick bite to eat!

Best puffy tacos in San Antonio! A lot of food for a low price — I could only finish half my taco plate. Service was excellent. Waitress walked outside to take my to-go order and I was on my way in less than five minutes.

I literally try and make it here every week and it is about a 20 minute drive away. From the great food to great servers. I still remember my first time coming to oscars about two years ago. The waiter found out I hadn’t ate here and brought about three different samples. I have eaten everything from the puffy tacos(chicken and beef) to the enchiladas, fish, fries, and even burgers and I am still to this point always impressed.

Both times I had gone the waitress was rude but I did notice each one was nice to the men they waited on. My friends and I agreed that the second time was the last time. We had gone for a lunch special that ended at two we sat 20 min and when the waitress finally came to the table it was 2 min till and would not honor the special. Needless to say we walked out.

Puffy Tacos are delicious. Hard to describe but a must have at only $ 2.25 each! They are very tasty and freshly prepared. Bathrooms are dirty so pee before you go please.

I am giving up on them and won’t go back!!. It’s a shame. We have lived in the neighborhood for 26 years and recently the service has become consistently HORRIBLE. Oscars has been a family tradition for generations. Tonight iced the cake. We went to have enchiladas and sat at two different tables for over 20 minutes waiting to be serviced. All the waitresses(3) and female manager were ignoring us. When we gave up and left, I addressed this with the manager asking«if our money was different from everyone elses?» She threw her hands up in the air and walked away, typical of the service we had received so far. I asked of she was really ignoring the question and her response was«i am only one person«…there were 3 other waitresses and her. So… we left and went to another local favorite … Piedras Negra de Noche, where the food and service was great. There was also live music. We work too hard for our money to be treated badly.

I strive to be fair and useful in reviews. Pro: The food is great. Authentic puffy tacos with tender savory fillings. Con: The service is slow torture. I’ve been there half a dozen times. Once, I got decent service. The other times, including this last time. Indifferent at best, hostile at worst. We get there, it takes ten minuets for one of the two waitresses to take our order after we are seated. It takes another twenty to get our order, which was incorrect. I got one carne guisada puffy, which I had to eat with a fork. I usually frown upon puffy tacos too fragile to hold a filling, but this was tasty and worth some forgiveness and I arrived starving. The fajita puffy was easier to eat. The meat was tender enough not to tear the shell. When the waitress brought our food, we placed a «to go» order. Twenty minutes after we ate and paid, my mother gave up on making eye contact with our waitress from our table. She got up and asked for the order we already paid for. The waitress told my mother she would check on the order, and then turned her head to wipe a table and muttered,“I don’t cook the food.” I was still seated at the table when my mother grabbed the«to go» back and left. I asked her what she told the waitress in the parking lot, for the waitress to respond with such snark. The manager was delivering drive thru orders to cars, and clearly over heard the exchange. My mother wanted to go back inside and complain and take back her tip. I reminded her, like I did on the way to the place, the service is always bad, and we were running behind our other errands. I was not surprised the manager did not stop us or try to address the problem. I heard other customers complaining about the service to the cashier. I did not even hear apologetic excuses. I saw steely eyed indifference. She may as well have the phrase,“Just pay and go away” on her forehead. My suggestion to all tipped servers, both good ones and no self awareness ones like ours, save your snarky comments about customers for out of customers earshot. Restrunt owners, if your customers feel like you don’t care about them, from your underpaid and overworked staff to your shrugging managerial skills, it doesn’t matter how good your food is, you will fold. My family has been dragging me there, and forgiving bad service, for sentimental reasons for too long. That sweetheart deal just went up in flames. We will be taking our puffy taco cravings down the street.

Best in my book. Been coming here for years and I’m never disappointed. Puffy tacos is all I ever get here but my dad use to get the fish.

Ordered a large family meal and they messed it up. I called back they put me on hold for 15 min. I called back line was busy. I paid over 30 dollars for my order and no response. I paid cash. I wish I would have paid credit I would have disputed the charge. Later on… Finally called back again and spoke with management she says she is busy and will call me back. I don’t think I will go back. No matter how good your food is you must have great customer service. I think because this place is on Westside they don’t trust there customers..

I ordered the 6 piece fried shrimp. The shrimp was good, and so were the french fries. They have a jukebox which offers some good music. Just wish they served complimentary chips and salsa, like many other Mexican restaurants do.

Holy cow – this place is really really good. I got«the sleeper,» and that’s exactly what I felt like after I finished everything on my plate. It was a glorious food coma. We have a lot of tex mex around here, but I felt like this was some of the most authentic. Well done!

I’ve driven past this place hundreds of times. Today, I finally stopped in for the lunch special(enchilada plate $ 4.99). The restaurant was clean, the staff courteous and attentive. If you want tortilla chips, you must pay for them. That’s okay, I didn’t come to Oscar’s to load up on free chips. My food arrived within a short time. I cleaned my plate in what seemed no time at all. Well worth the effort to drive from across town for their food. Creamy beans, rice made the right way and cheese enchiladas in a nice sauce. I think it would be tough to find another place that could put a plate like Oscar’s together for the price. Why not the fifth star? I guess I’m just used to receiving free chips. Give them a try.

Dropped by on a whim. Regretted it. Service was the worse. We sat waiting to be acknowledged by 3 different waitresses. 2 of whom we’re running around like chickens with their heads cut off. While the other female server strolled around like her s__t didn’t stink. Puffy tacos have nothing on Rey’s. Rest of the food was mediocre at best. Won’t be going back.

Best kept secret. The puffy tacos are amazing. It doesn’t matter if you order the chicken or beef. Tasty food.

This place is worth driving to the south side for. Puffy tacos are ridiculous! I prefer you get off and take in the place. Play the jukebox while you’re at it.

Went there with family as per recommendations from Rays Drive-Inn. Rays was closed for employee’s party. Quick and friendly service. Ordered Puffy Chicken Tacos, Nachos and Salsa and Tortilla Soup. Tortilla Soup was excellent one of the bests ever. Ended-up ordering another for to-go. Nachos and Salsa were amazing. Salsa was HOT but not searing. Puffy Tacos were very disappointing. Bland, stale and mushy. Taco Shell was very soft and had no bite… Perhaps sitting too long there. Did not like it. Would not go there again for Puffy Tacos.

«Tell me where you eat your tacos and I will tell you who you are.» Author unknown All year I have been eating tacos from this place, to~go, as my coworker frequents this spot during her lunch break. It’s crazy since my grandmother lived like a few blocks away from Oscar’s and I only remembered passing by it when I was young(er). As long as I have lived in this city I have never been here before in my life. But eating an overabundance of tacos and hearing about their famous puffy taco, well my curiosity was suddenly piqued. I had to try this place out in person.
During lunchtime this place gets jam packed! Inside there are a few tables, not many. La Fogata or Pico De Gallo this place is not. It is small but it is a place that has big flavors. They have tiny booths for two or a few long tables where CPS and teachers looking to play hooky converge. I also spotted a lady with a Chanel purse waiting for her order, so it is a socioeconomic cross section of our community. In addition the waitstaff and service are excellent! No sooner did I order my puffy taco plate did it arrive. It was hot, fresh and delicious! The oil soaked tortilla was pure magic! The meat filling of the taco was beyond perfect! I have tried puffy tacos at other places and when I picked them up they fell apart in my hands, but not this one. It’s really, really good! The prices are fair so it’s not too bad on the wallet. You could go as so far as to pick up the check for your buddy, your novio/novia or your favorite coworker and it won’t break the bank. If you are on the south side of town go check this place out! Good food. Good service. This is the meaning of happiness! Now if we can only make taco~ eating an Olympic event, surely I would win at least a silver! Or a bronze…

«Best puffy tacos in town». is Oscar’s claim. Ehhh, methinks not! They’re good but a bit too small for me and two of them were so greasy that they broke and I was eating with a fork. Another minor gripe I have is that Oscar’s charges $ 2.49 for chips and salsa. However it’s popular with the neighborhood locals and the place is roomy inside. The sweet tea is good and I was impressed with the attentive and friendly service. When I dined there the radio played a mix of new wave and disco from the late 70s instead of the usual Tejano/norteno music you usually hear in most hole in the wall taquerias/Mexican restaurants on the south or west sides. I will return and order something else besides the puffy tacos next time.

This used to be an institution in my family. My grandpa grew up right around the corner so we have been coming here for generations. It used to be the best hearty Mexican joint in San Antonio. Our last visit here was disappointing. I honestly can’t pin point what it was that was off but the food just wasn’t as good. I had cheese enchiladas. They were just ok. They used to be fantastic. Something here is different and off but I can’t tell you what. Maybe the tacos are still good but since I didn’t have that I couldn’t tell you. Come here and try it because it really is what a taco shack should be: a little run down, in a sketchy neighborhood, old and run by the same family for ages, but stick to the tacos I guess.
