This is a great gem a bit off the beaten path. Great food and friendly atmosphere. My salad was fresh, leaf lettuce and mixed greens dressed and tossed. The fish tacos were mountainous and served hot and fresh. It is clear these folks take the time to make a good meal at a great price! UPDATE: Had the fish and chips w/slaw today. Also amazing. The fries are seasoned, battered, and fantastic!

I usually never take the time to write a review, but La Tuna has become our favorite restaurant in San Antonio. My wife took me here for my birthday. The staff was very friendly. The fries were awesome, I was speechless. I had the Pasta on special, with blackened chicken, sausage. The chicken was cooked to perfection and tasted really good. The coleslaw tasted really good, and so did the dipping sauces.

I came here because I wanted Mexican food and was extremely disappointed. They only had a few option on the menu and the only Mexican item was nachos. So I got the white bean chili nachos. They were ok, but nothing special. This one lay had giant fried mushroom which looked amazing. I want to come back for those! The little bar outside only serves beer. So no margarita for me either. They do have a nice little patio section outside.

Loved it! Delicious food. Everyone was so Friendly and very attentive. Most importantly, I saw that restaurant had been given two blue plate awards. Thanks for the great experience!

Previously, my foodburgers have been made with rich and salty slabs of flesh. At their zenith they have been thick, succulent, and oozing with a desire known to many a creature. This foodburger, however, was most queer. Gone was the tasty stench of flesh from its grasp, and in its place was an amalgamation of bean plants and rice seeds. Seared together in a shell of oil and resting on a bed of crunch things, it was unlike any foodburger I have ever encountered, indeed. This foodburger transcended above and beyond any expectation that my puny, infantile mind could create. My gut demons rested soundly and curled up to one another deep within my cavernous gut-hole. For this spectacular feat, I granted the foodslave all of my Stars of Wanting.

A very unique place, consists of two buildings, one is kitchen the other is the bar. In between in the yard are picnic tables for outdoor seating. Both buildings have some indoor seating too. The food is top notch in quality, flavor, quantity it has it all. Service is order at the counter and they bring it to you. Except they bring it on real plates with cloth napkins. Highly recommended and a great value.

Super casual, laid back family owned gem. Order food in one building, beer and wine at another, hang out in between under huge liveoaks and listen to live music. The food in general far surpasses other fancier places in both flavor and presentation. Real chef-prepared original creations, as well as the Cheesy Burger, probably the best hamburger in San Antonio. A perfectly flame-broiled ½ lb patty on a home-made bun, a ton of cheese, and everything on the side. Other stand-outs are the fish tacos and the steak sandwich. Pet friendly and smoker friendly outdoors. Limited indoor seating.

Came here because it was listed as «Mexican» food, my friend also said it would be a good choice if I was hungry for some«Mexican» food. …He got a burger & I got fries, they were decent.

I came here for the first time with a group of co-workers for lunch time! We ordered ahead — food was ready when we arrived, staff was polite and helpful, and everything was delicious! Will definitely be coming back!

The atmosphere is amazing. My fiancé loved her bacon cheeseburger but I had the fish tacos. The fish tacos I got were huge and a little messy so get lots of napkins. They are not spicy so don’t worry. The beer is nice and cold just the way I love them. The waitresses were amazing and so was the older lady at the front.

When the weather is nice outside, come to La Tuna for some delicious food! Most of the seating is outdoors with picnic tables. I felt like I was in the ATX when I ate here… it definitely has a cool vibe. The fried mushrooms were delicious. The breading was nice and crunchy with a good amount of black pepper. It’s served with white gravy on the side… mmm! Next I had the blackened fish tacos with a nopalito salad. I was worried the slaw on top was going to be overpowering, but it was very crisp and refreshing. I am definitely coming back to try out the burgers!

My significant other and I came here before going out to the Riverwalk to look at Christmas lights. The location is VERY hole in the wall, and if it weren’t for their Christmas lights, I don’t think we would have been able to see it. Parking is virtually non-existent, and has only about 7 spots. Keep in mind that La Tuna Grill shares space with La Tuna(I think La Tuna is a bar) and that they are separate buildings. They have a lot of outdoor seating, but when you walk inside, they have about 10 tables, so there’s not a lot of space. In terms of ordering, this place is like a Whataburger, where you order and pay at the counter, they give you a number, and you sit down at a table and wait for them to bring food to you. I ordered the Beer battered fish and chips, which came with three fish, fries, and coleslaw. The coating on the fish is thin(doesn’t bother me), but the fish itself… I don’t know what fish they used, but it tasted very fishy. If I didn’t smother it in tartar sauce(which is good here), I probably wouldn’t have eaten it. Their fries are EXCELLENT, golden red and crispy. And while I’m not a huge coleslaw person, my SO insists that the coleslaw wad good. Service here was good. Despite only one person being the cashier, waiter, and busboy, we were pretty well attended to. While I don’t intend on being a regular(I live about 30 minutes away), this place is one to consider when in the area.

Good food and good atmosphere. Great outdoor seating area for groups and friends gatherings. Only von was had to go inside and order and minimum on the cc purchase. Service tends to a bit slow so be patient but food will make up for that. P. s. bring cash for the bar

This is my third time here and I finally tried something new. The first couple times I had the blackened fish tacos and they are phenomenal but today I tried the mini burgers and they were delicious as well. Love the outdoor area but still having the option to sit inside if it’s too hot/cold out. It’s located on the backside of the blue star and has its own parking lot. I’ve come here with my girlfriends and kids, my husband, friends visiting and this is a must if you’re in the Southtown area. The menu items aren’t your typical American food, they have some tasty sauces and a good amount of vegetarian options that are healthy as well(not just quesadilla and fries). I’ll definitely be back, I’ve heard good things about the first Friday atmosphere so can’t wait to check it out next month.

My husband & I mainly come here for the cheesy burger with jalapenos and grilled onions. It comes with fries that are extra crispy, well seasoned, & delicious! The portions are HUGE and we should share. Unfortunately, we are both big eaters and must get one order for each of us. We keep telling ourselves that we will try other things on the menu to make this review more complete. One time, we managed to add an order of the super nachos — which were just ok… nothing to write home about. But we keep coming back for the burger and fries. Oh well one day… So you order at the counter & are given a number. Grab a seat outside or inside. A server will come find you & bring you your order. The inside dining area is quite small and not good for groups over 6& even that is kind of pushing the limit. So if you have a large party, plan on coming in the evenings or during cooler days because you will have to sit outside. Bring bug spray! The biggest drawback of sitting inside is the constant slamming of the doors! Ugh! That grates on my nerves. But, when we aren’t with a large group, I prefer sitting inside and away from all the insects. Gotta pick your battles :\ The food is good enough to put up some annoyances.

La Tuna grill is a great place for outdoor dining and groups, especially in the cooler fall and spring seasons. We just took my in-laws here awhile back and they loved it. A nice place for an eclectic group of folks to go and enjoy some fairly yummy food and drinks with some great customer service to boot. We had a variety of apps shared around the table and all were pretty satisfied with them; the fried mushrooms were huge and quickly scarfed down by all and my husband hoarded the wings like they were going out of style. I can safely say that the roasted lamb sandwich is one of the most delicious things this place offers; the peach chutney was delicious and complimented the lamb, goat cheese and bread perfectly. I have cravings for this sandwich from time to time that I must satisfy asap. I would gladly give this place five stars aside from the fact that their fish tacos were very sub-par for such a great restaurant. My husband was unhappy with them and he never complains about food EVER. I tasted them and he was right– very bland with no seasoning. La Tuna can and should do better in regards to this particular menu item, but I will always come back for a chill atmosphere and a good lamb sandwich.

So I came here before and had the fish tacos. I was NOT a fan. I thought the tacos were bland at best. Tonight I went back and tried the cheesy burger. Now this thing was GOOD. They definitely did not skimp on the cheese like some other places do. The burger was huge, and came with seasoned breaded fried that were good also. Before I had this burger I was rating this place as a 2, but because of that delicious burger I’m upping it to a 3. I would like to go back and try something else.

La Tuna and La Tuna Grill are two separate businesses on the same corner, which explains why there are two different Unilocal entries. It’s just as well because I really do want to critique them separately. La Tuna Grill is the restaurant located at the back of the La Tuna hipster compound. The indoor dining space is extremely tight, so your best bet is to sit outside. The food is slightly upscale bar fare. The fried appetizers(jalapeño poppers, stuffed mushrooms and breaded French fries) are obviously from frozen food-service packs, but they taste pretty good. The breading on the fish & chips is weird: puffy and not at all crunchy. The portobello mushroom sandwich is served on an excellent roll, but the mushroom is so wet that it makes the bottom too soggy to pick the sandwich up. The restaurant serves iced tea and soft drinks, but you have to walk over to the La Tuna bar if you want beer or wine. Our favorite thing about La Tuna Grill was the white chocolate cherry bread pudding, which my wife declared the best in San Antonio. This is the only thing I can imagine returning for.

La Tuna is really delicious. Although some days I can’t decide if I like the atmosphere or the food better. I suppose if it’s sunny, and about 75 degrees… okay, I still go for the food! A great deal of seating is outdoors, if you haven’t figured that out. Shaded, spread out, and pet friendly. Indoors is small and can get a bit noisy and crowded, because the food is great! My first visit: garden bean burger. The best. The bean purée and the salsa with melted cheddar is a perfect combination. The bun is on another level. I generally don’t eat bread, but this tasted like savory dessert, so I ate the top half. Slaw or nopalitos can be subbed for fries. The portabello sandwich is in second place. Great mushroom, lots of spinach. I only complain because the bread was quite soggy. Perhaps they used too much oil … again, I don’t give a damn about the bread… you might. The nachos are very tasty, I’ve only had the bean nachos. They have toppings on each nacho. Nopalitos salad is tasty and fresh, but I haven’t tried them before eating here so… I also can’t say enough about the shrimp. Breaded well, big, and succulent pieces. Fish tacos are on my to try list next…

Oh my goodness. Can it be? Is there finally a burger good enough to make me forget about every other burger I’ve ever had? Hell yes. Before the Southtown Crawl #2 began, it was imperative that we all get some carbs and seeing as how none of us had been to La Tuna, the decision was made. Ordered the Cheeseburger with grilled onions and about 10 minutes later, it was brought out to me. First impression? Gah-damn that’s a big burger! And it was perfect, the cheese melted, the meat seasoned and the onions were almost carmelized. Fries were amazingly crispy too. I tried my best to finish everything and I’m ashamed to say I failed. La Tuna Grill is THE spot for pre-drinking dinner in Southtown!
