We had been to Gustav’s twice last year and couldn’t wait for them to reopen. Having lived in Germany for several years, we found Gustav’s fairly authentic as a Biergarten. We were sorely disappointed. They no longer have the shank, the best thing on the menu. We tried the schnitzel instead. It was a flat almost un findable piece of mystery meat fried crisp and obviously prefrozen. The lemon caper sauce, what little there was, seemed canned and there was not a caper in sight. That said, the music was fun and Chris our waiter very attentive. I hope they get their original chef back. I’m so glad our German friend was unable to come with us as she would have been so unimpressed. Last night was definitely not up to Gustav’s previous or Magnolia’s high standards.

Gustav’s is the patio behind the Magnolia Pancake House. They have an awesome patio and a large fire pit out back. The menu is German inspired. I had the goulash which was amazing. BF had the pork shanks. He loved them. The beer selection isn’t huge but it’s local, good stuff and German good stuff. They are only open Wed-Friday evenings from 4 or 5(can’t remember) til 9.

Started out with the Rueben Rolls(the makings of a Rueben sandwich, but in an egg roll wrapper and fried). They were soooo good. The goulash was really rich and served over house made spatzle. I am normally not a big fan of red cabbage, but their version was so tasty that I told my husband I could eat a plate of just that. The only disappointment was that they didn’t serve German wine, but they did have a nice selection of wines from the Becker Vineyard in Fredericksburg TX. Nice atmosphere on the padio back deck. Very pretty back there. We will definitely come back.
